About 20 centuries ago, there was an emperor whose greed brought deep suffering to all of China. The heavens sent the meteor that struck Gouwu Mountain, turning it green and releasing the Tao Tei. From that day on, the Tao Tei rise every 60 years to scourge the north of China. They come to remind us of what happens when greed is unchecked. They eat anything, alive or dead, and take food to their queen. She depends on her soldiers to feed her. Only with the food they provide is she able to multiply. The capital, and its two million people, is only 800 li away. If the Tao Tei ever had that much nourishment, no corner of the world would be safe.
~ Strategist Wang explaining about the Queen and her minions' origins to Garin.

The Tao Tei Queen is the main antagonist of the 2017 live-action monster film The Great Wall. She is the tyrannical queen and leader of the Tao Tei who commands her army and plans to breed by reproducing more Tao Tei so that they can wipe out humanity.

Her vocal sound effects were provided by Jonathan Borland, who also did the vocal sound effects of the Tao Tei in the same film.

Biography[]

Not much is known about the origins of the Queen and her kind, but millions of years ago, she and her Tao Tei army arrived on Earth via an asteroid. She immediately orders her minions to eat humans or any other creature and feed their remains to her so she can reproduce and make more of her kind. Eventually, the people of China built a gargantuan wall to protect the city and the world. The Queen would frequently lead attacks on the great wall every 60 years or so for 2000 years so she can get past and eat the city's civilians and later the rest of the world.

When two mercenaries named William Garin and Pero Tovar arrive, the Queen leads an attack with her army one week early on the wall, leading to massive losses on both sides until she calls off the attack and retreats. Later, she attacks the great wall again in a fog and allows one of her soldiers to be captured. What the people in the wall didn't know was that she was using fights on the great wall as a distraction to make a tunnel underneath it so she can bypass. With the captured Tao Tei, it was revealed by the army to the emperor at the capital city, who awakens and reveals it's location to the Queen. Once she gets on the other side of the great wall with her army, she leads a genocide throughout the captial, killing and eating millions of people while planning to move on to the rest of the world.

Garin arrives at the capital after the attack, where he sees the Tao Tei feeding their queen while surrounded by her guards. Attaching black powder grenades to the captured Tao Tei to make it eat food and go to the queen to eat, Garin attempts to fire an arrow from a tower, but the Queen's guards deflect it. The Queen, sensing she is in danger by the black powder weapons by Garin, orders her minions to search the towers and kill him. He tries again, but her guards deflect it once again. This time, the Queen notices Garin and sends out all of her soldiers into the tower he is in. Eventually, on the third attempt to kill the Queen, Garin succeeds by throwing a magnet, which the guards are stunned by and after she is finally killed, all of the Queen's minions die with her, ending her reign of terror once and for all.

Appearance[]

The Queen resembles a Protoceratops with an elongated, squat body, overlapping plates on her back, a long whip-like tail and her eyes are located on her face. Her head is rounded with a bulging forehead, and her lips curve upward which give her a permanent snarling expression. Her most distinguishing physical feature is a two-pronged sail on her head which vibrates to signal her troops.

Personality[]

The Queen is the only member of the Tao Tei with any kind of advanced thinking capability. She is the only one that is confirmed to be capable of strategic analysis and planning in response to the changing circumstances on the battlefield shown when she presumably instructed her soldiers to move slowly and silently through thick clouds of fog. She is also shown to be ruthless in the execution of these strategies, and is completely willing to throw away the lives of her soldiers to achieve her goals, though she will order a tactical withdrawal if she is losing too many for little to no gain. She is the most vital aspect as she both serves as the reproductive element of the colony as well as the mental initiator of the hive mind. Killing her would cause the whole colony to collapse, with the entire army ceasing all activity and freezing in their tracks.

Trivia[]

  • The crooning sound the Queen makes to command her soldiers is similar to how the Muddy Bewilderbeast from the How to Train Your Dragon series controls smaller dragons.
  • The Tao Tei Queen has distinctly slanted eyes, similar to stereotypical depictions of Asians.
  • The Tao Tei Queen was originally depicted as slightly more slim and would have engaged the Order's warriors in close combat.
  • Given the Queen is only somewhat larger than the soldiers and that none of the young Tao Tei are ever seen, it is unclear how she manages to birth such a huge army in a short span of time.
