Tara (surname unknown) is the main hidden antagonist of the slasher film Shrooms. She's a college student vacationing with several of her friends and their tour guide in Ireland to find psilocybin mushrooms to get high on, until she accidentally eats an uncanny Deathcap shroom and sees her friends dying in visions killed (seemingly) by a murderous monk related to lore in the woods, the deaths ending up being real. In the twist, it turns out that Tara herself is the murderer.

She's portrayed by Lindsey Haun.

Biography[]

Tara and her friends arrive in Ireland, meeting their native-born friend Jake, who'll take them into the woods near an abandoned children's home to help them find the shrooms they'll get high on. They see the eccentric, feral locals, Ernie, Bernie, and Dale, and when they hit a goat, jock Bluto reacts to the goat still jolting from being a live and beats the animal to death, which the friends find far too drastic. They continue regardless, eventually reaching the fields where they start collecting shrooms. The horror begins with Tara consuming a shroom and having a convulsive seizure and horrific future premonitions. When her friends rush to her side and resuscitate her, Jake realizes she didn't eat a psilocybin shroom, but an identical-looking Death Bell, which is neurotoxic.

While Tara lays in the tent to recover herself, Jake sits with the rest of the group and tells them a ghost story about the woods and the children's home. A violent, sadistic monk killed the twin brother of one of the charges, and as a result, the living twin got his revenge on the monk by brutally attacking and maiming him. It's said in the legend that the monk still roams the woods, there ready to kill any trespassers. Tara hears the whole story, and as a result, as well as from her horror and the Death Bell shroom, she envisions the entire group dying one by one, seemingly at the hands of the monk.

The first to be targeted is Bluto. After drinking hallucinogenic tea, he stumbles into the woods, where the seeming ghost of the dead cow, now talking, makes threats at him. He then hallucinates a woman in a nearby abandoned car and solicits fellatio from the "woman". At the peak of Bluto's orgasm, his crotch is bitten off, before what looks like the monk comes out of the car and butchers him to death. The next morning they all drink the hallucinogenic tea, not worried about Bluto's disappearance, but the men and the women are separated as a result of their trips and states of mind. They hallucinate the monk chasing them in the woods, so the women run and try not to draw attention to have the monk follow them. After more than enough bickering, the women are lost from each other in the woods. Just like Tara's visions, and as she sees when she reaches their murder sites, Holly's axed to death and Lisa's drowned in the nearby marshes.

Jake and Troy find Tara at the bank and have her follow them to the abandoned house, where they try to reach for help. The two men scout the property to make sure it's sake, but Troy's murdered by the monk, Jake jumping out a window and breaking his leg from the impact from the fall. Tara finds him and the two run off. She places Jake down to rest his leg, particularly to check the surroundings when she gets a sense the monk's near. The monk creeps down from a tree above and axes Jake to death, his last words being "I love you" to Tara. Tara runs for her own safety, but the monk catches up to her and lunges at her.

Surprisingly, she's only found unconscious. When she wakes, she's on a stretcher being lifted out of the woods by a helicopter. She reaches the ambulance, where she sees one of the woodsmen being arrested for the murders. She simply silently mumbles "he's not the one" over and over in the ambulance. The paramedic cleans her wounds and talks about how he's going to see his family. Suddenly, a phone rings and the paramedic realizes it's not his. Tara lifts her hand from under the sheets and sees she's holding the phone of one of her dead friends she thought the monk stole. She flashes back and finally realizes in all her lucid visions she was the killer all along. When she ate the Death Bell, she not only hallucinated herself as the monk, the "monk" personality led her to butcher all her friends to death, even voicing the cow Bluto hallucinated before killing him. Every vision she saw was the Death Bell poisoning her and tricking her mind into killing them all under a false pretense even for herself until all her friends were dead. Tara barely reacts in front of the paramedic, out of fear of being found out. Instead, she mumbles "help me" and the paramedic leans in closer. She then stabs him with trauma shears and presses herself against the backdoor window of the ambulance. Once she gets it free, she escapes and runs into the woods, her fate and state of mind never fully being determined before the film ends.
