~ Tarantulas turning on the Predacons |
Tarantulas is the secondary antagonist of the 2021 comic series, Transformers: Beast Wars published by IDW Comics. A scientist and torturer already infamous for his brutality, he was swayed to serve Megatron to satisfy his own morbid curiosities, serving as not only his chief lieutenant but his primary scientist and torturer. But in secret, Tarantulas schemes to usurp his master, using shell program to turn Maximal protoforms into evil and create his own personal army, and eventually betrays his team to the Vok when their offers knowledge swayed him more than Megatron and then seeks to conquer Cybertron on his own.
Personality[]
Just like his original counterpart, Tarantulas' most notable trait is his sadism, bloodthirstiness, and ambition. Tarantulas prides himself as an artist when it comes to his tortures. His reputation as a torture precedes him, and is even a cannibal who delights on feasting on the remains of his victims. Above all, Tarantulas is an intellectual. He focuses his efforts on mostly scientific endeavors, which is why he got swayed to follow Megatron in the first place, and it's why the Vok was able to sway him to turn sides. And this is best displayed on his skills when it comes to invention of what all weapons or programming the Predacons use. And as shown, Tarantulas has no regard for anybody but himself. He holds no loyalty to Megatron or the Vok, viewing them as means to an end to create his own personal army to conquer Cybertron, and sees everyone as mere raw materials to use to the point where he only stops Megatron from killing Terrorsaur just because Megatron blasting him will leave no sustainable remains.
Biography[]
Tarantulas was a Predacon scientist who values knowledge and prides himself as one of Cybertron's greatest geniuses, however, he is an infamous mad scientist whose penchant for torture gave him a repuation as a butcher to the Maximals that it is known death is preferable a fate. Swayed by the Predacon separatist, Galavar, to be the chief lieutenant of his scientific affairs in ruling Cybertron. When Galavar, now rechristened as Megatron, went rogue and stole the Golden Disk, Tarantulas broke into the Great Shipyard to destroy all ships capable of transwarp travel, except for the Darksyde who Tarantulas hijacks for Megatron's use.
When the Predacons fled Cybertron, Tarantulas was the one who hacked the security protocols and activated the ship's transwarp drive to follow the coordinates set by the Golden Disk to arrive at ancient Earth. However after activating, the ship came under heavy assault by the Maximal exploration craft, the Axalon, which causes both ships to crash. Because of the high concentrations of energon radiation across the planet, to shield themselves, Tarantulas was outfitted with the alt-mode of a tarantula.
Focusing his efforts on tracking the unspace signatures within the ship, Tarantulas butts head with Dinobot, to which he makes it clear he has no loyalty and answers to nobody and do what he pleases. When Terrorsaur captures Nyx, Tarantulas takes his sweet time strapping her to his electrical torture device, subjecting her to horrifying amounts of pain for hours on end, till her circuits and flesh break, while Tarantulas takes glee and priding himself as an artist of torture. This ends up repulsing Dinobot into stopping the torture, to which Tarantulas realizes that Nyx witholding her words indicated all the Maximals survived the crash and convinces Megatron to stop. So Megatron allows Tarantulas to dispose of her as he pleases. Tarantulas uses this to have a new transformation lock lens tested, forcing Nyx to stay in her robot mode and so slowly decay by the huge amounts of energon radiation, to which Tarantuas gleefully intends to feast on her remains.
However, Dinobot, having enough of the Predacons' lack of honor, rebels and helps save Nyx, kicking Tarantulas in the face and initiate the Darksyde's lockdown procedure. While Tarantulas manages to unscramble the security systems, Dinobot made it off with Nyx and bring her to the Axalon. When a search party was present to follow Dinobot's trail, Megatron and Tarantulas formulated a plan to take out the Maximals, in which Megatron will launch an assault as a distraction and Tarantulas will sabotage the ship. Tarantulas infiltrates the vents to destroy it from the inside. Encountering Rattrap at the lower levels, Tarantulas attempts to devour him but Rattrap shoots him at the face and escapes, much to Tarantulas' fury. Scouring the ship worthy of salvage from the ship's laboratories, Tarantulas discovers that the Maximals was carrying a cargo of protoforms that had been ejected into the Earth's atmosphere.
Eager at raising an army to overthrow Megatron, Tarantulas quickly forms a shell program in which if any of such Maximal protoforms awaken, they'd forcibly turn into evil Predacons against their will. While Rattrap uses the ship's cargo-loading exoskeleton to defenestrate Tarantulas, Tarantulas uses a sneak attack to stab Dinobot through the chest during his one-man stand and joined in the Predacons beating him to near death. Returning to the Darksyde, Tarantulas attempts to make contact with the Maximal stasis pod network, satisfied when the fruits of his labour pulled off and Blackarachnia emerged, who then makes it clear she is not her slave. Joining in as Megatron welcomes Blackarachnia to the fold, Megatron points out on him not being aware, hoping this was merely an oversight on Tarantulas' part to not inform him already. Eventually he and Tarantulas create a maze trap for the Maximals, using Waspinator as bait.
While Terrorsaur gets impatient and attempts to overthrow Megatron, Tarantulas deescalates the situation and convinces Megatron to spare Terrorsaur to conserve resources, because a blast would leave no recoverable parts from Terrorsaur's remains. Upon the Maximal assault on the Darksyde, Tarantulas faces Nyx once again, who promptly destroys the ship's transwarp drive. After being defeated by her, he takes Terrorsaur's corpse to turn him into an undead zombie. Eventually Tarantulas meets with the Vok leaders, beings from unspace, who in exchange for the secrets of the universe, willingly sells out both the Maximals and Predacons. He also uses a highly potent form of energon to create a bomb capable of instilling artificial aggression to the Maximals in efforts of having everyone attack each other. He also reprograms all the remaining stasis pods that fell onto Earth and turn them into the Children of the Vok. However, when Rhinox and Dinobot find the transwarp drive deactivated already, Megatron immediately picks up on Tarantulas' treachery. While Tarantulas tries to flee the scene, Dinobot manages to catch up to him, incapacitating and bringing him for questioning.
However Tarantulas had one final trick, using the zombified Terrorsaur to devour his friend, Scorponok, while he sends a signal to Cybertorn in hopes of rescue and finally be able to conquer Cybertron on his own. The chaos organized causes all the Cybertronians within Earth to fight to the death while Tarantulas watches the carnage unfold on the background and prepares to leave. However, Blackarachnia soon incapacitates him, but the violence prompted the Vok to wipe out the Earth to restart from scratch, but they got hit with the Axolon's new Unspace weapons as well as Megatron, banishing all four of them, to which Tarantulas slips away from the confusion. His whereabouts are still unknown, but Blackarachnia, having now taken over as leader in Megatron's absence, intends to kill him for his treachery as a priority.
