Taravangian is one of the main antagonists of The Stormlight Archive, by Brandon Sanderson, He seeks to stop Odium from destroying Roshar. After a deal with The Nightwatcher, he gained extreme inteligence, allowing him to create a Diagram to map out the future, which he used in his schemes. He eventually becomes the vessel of Odium.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
When Taravangian was born, he had a nuchal cord. It was believed he had brain damage, though this was not the case. He became othe king of Kharbranth. At some point he met with a Herald named Battar, who told him a Desolation was coming. He begged the Nightwatcher for the capacity to stop the Desolation. Cultivation gave him great intelligence and great compassion, though never at the same time. Each morning, he would wake up with different levels of intelligence, with inverse levels of compassion. One day he3 woke up with an extreme level of intelligence, which allowed him to create a map of the future known as the Diagram. He recorded the Diagram and created a secret organization of the same name. He set up many hospitals in Karbranth. He secretly killed people there, recording their Death Rattles.
Stormlight Archive[]
He was hosting Jasnah Kholin in Kharbranth. Taravangian's granddaughter became trapped ba a large stone. In actuality, he planned this to study Jasnah's power. Jasnah pretended to use a Soulcaster to turn the stone to smoke, but in reality used Surgebinding. Later, he asked Jasnah's ward, Shallan, to draw him.
Taravangian aquired Szeth's Oathstone and used a proxy to order Szeth to assassinate many world leaders, which started a civil war in Jah Keved. When Szeth was sent to kill Taravangian, it was revealed that Taravangian held the Oathstone, and ordered him to kill Dalinar Kholin.
Before the last Highrprince of Ja Keved died, Taravangian visited him and convinced thie Highprince to make him King of Jah Keved. When Szeth realized that Kaladin was a Knight Radiant, he realized he wasn't Truthless and abandoned his Oathstone, removing Taravangian's control. Taravangian then joined Dalinar in Urithiru. While there he pretended to work with Dalinar while secretly scheming to give himself more political power. He decided the best plan was to help Odium to destory much of Roshar, and spare Kharbranth. He destroyed Dalinar's coalition with other kingdoms in order to weaken him.
In Thaylenah, Taravangian opened an Oathgate so that the Singer army could attack Dalinar's forces. After Dalinar won, Taravangian confessed his actions to him. Odium approached Taravangian, who traded his Diagram for the safety of Kharbranth. Members of the Diagram betrayed Dalinar but were defeated. Taravangian was immediately arrested.
Taravangian tried to ask Szeth for his sword, Nightblood, hoping to kill Odium's vessel, but he lacked the intellegence at that time to explain it. Taravangian asked to see Szeth, knowing Szeth would come to kill him. At that time Odium pulled Taravangian into a vision. Using the time Distortion, he managed to kill Odium's vessel Rayse with Nightblood just as Szeth killed him. Taravangian then became the new vessel of Odium.
