Taroumaru Seike is a minor antagonist in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.

He's a member of Scavenger, a mercenary organization from the dark side of Academy City that serves under Rizou Nakimoto. He has the distinction of being the only male member of the group and not having a vendetta against the autority figures of Academy City.

He is voiced by Yuka Nukui in Japanese and Rachel Glass in English.

Appearance[]

Seike is a young boy with an androgynous appearance. It's only after he's confronted by Mikoto, whom he had mistaken for a boy due to her disguise, that he confirms he is male. He has long black hair and a bored or tired look in his eyes. In the manga, Seike has a tattoo on his tounge that's styled in the shape of a skull with horns and chains which he tends to stick out.

Out of all the members of Scavenger, Seike is considered the most normal looking, as he is often seen wearing a simple black and white sailor school uniform or seifuku with a short skirt. He's also seen barefooted most of the time.

Personality[]

As opposed to his teammates, Seike is rather laidback and apathetic, having a casual demeanor which befits his bored appearance. However, like the other scavengers, Seike is a merciless and cold-blooded killer who displays practically no remorse when doing his job of killing people or destroying things. He shows very little concern for the lives of others and is quite willing to kill anyone who stands in his way. While less excitable than Naru, Seike enjoys fighting people and doesn't need much incentive to pick a fight. He also demonstates a more sadistic and mischievous side of himself, as shown when he brutally crushed an Anti-Skill officer's neck with his bare hands.

However, unlike his comerades, Seike dosen't have a particular vendetta or hatred against teachers but only pretends to agree with their views to not disturb the team's harmony. Due to his androgyny, Seike likes to cosplay in female clothing, mostly is sailor uniforms. While highly confident in his abilities, Seike is also capable of realizing when he's severely outmatched, as shown by his encounters with Accelerator and Mikoto Misaka, two Level 5 espers.

Despite his remorseless personality, Seike is deeply loyal towards his comerades and is fiercely protective of them. Furthermore, he does possess some form of honor as he was willing to aid Mikoto Misaka in defeating the doppelgänger and even saved Ryouko Kuriba.

Biography[]

Seike's full background isn't known. What is known is that he was the last member to join Scavenger and doesen't share their collective hatred of teachers.

Powers and Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Stick Slip: Seike's esper power which allows him to control the coefficient of friction within one meter of himself. When setting the friction of air at maximum, even a 120 tons mecha is unable to move through the resulting "wall". Any attempt to move through this "wall" where the coefficient of friction is at the maximum is useless, as all energy of that attempt is converted into heat. As such, if a bullet tries to move through the wall, it will only heat up and melt. Indeed, Seike boasts that any material on earth will melt first before passing through the wall and that blades and bullets are useless against his power. However, this defense doesn't work on electricity, and Seike can only use his power for 3 minutes in a row. Seike has shown other applications of his power over friction.
    • Friction Removal: Seike is able to remove friction from the ground and cause objects to spin aimlessly. He uses this to make his opponents lose control of their movement or cause the screws on a machine to remove themselves. He can also make it so he cannot be physically grabbed or touched by physical projectiles. He can also use his ability in conjunction with a specialized gun to turn all the kickback into thrust by removing friction. However, he hates using it this way, as it apparently hurts.
    • Enhanced Speed: By removing the friction of his feet, Seike is able to move at great speed by sliding across the ground as if he had rollerskates.
    • Wallcrawling: During his battle with the Doppelganger, Seike demostrated the ability to walk up walls with relative ease.

Abilities[]

  • Expert Combatant: Seike exibits great proficiency in hand-to-hand combat, being able to effortlessly snap a grown man's neck with his bare hands.
