~ Tatiana's excuse for abandoning Oksana, unable to admit that she is just like her.

Tatiana (Russian: Татьяна) is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Lars Meier) of the TV series Killing Eve. She is the long-lost mother of Villanelle who was revealed to be even more narcissistic and abusive than her daughter, thus being the ultimate reason for her actions as an adult.

She was portrayed by Evgenia Dodina.

Biography[]

Earlier in her life, Tatiana married Anatoly Astankov and they both had a daughter named Oksana and a son named Pytor. However, Tatiana was a deeply cruel individual and would emotionally abuse the two of them, especially since Oksana displayed similar traits to her own and would behave erratically such as never smiling or crying, and for her husband loving the child more than her. She claimed that Anatoly was afraid of what she would do but given her amount of lies, this is most probably one of them. Eventually, after growing jealous of Anatoly's love for Oksana and coming to the realization that she was just like her and saw her for who she truly was, she took her only daughter to an orphanage and abandoned her.

It is unknown what happened to Anatoly but it is heavily implied that she killed him out of jealousy. When the orphanage that Oksana was burnt down, she presumed her dead but it is unlikely that she was saddened by this. Later, she met and married a farmer named Grigoriy and moved in with his son Fyodor and his girlfriend Yula. The two of them had a son named Bor'ka, whom Tatiana also emotionally abused the same as she did her children. It is also implied that after abandoning Oksana, Tatiana tortured Pytor, which led him to have dependency and anger issues, and forcing him to live out in the barn.

Many years later, Tatiana came home to find Oksana (known better known as Villanelle) all grown up and waiting for her at home. Although she was terrified, she displayed sadness and relief to see her daughter still alive. Over the next few days, Villanelle began warming up to the family and partook in their activities. However, Tatiana was confronted by Villanelle for her true nature, where she claimed that she was born evil and that she was controlling her father. After refusing to admit that the two of them were just alike and coldly ordering her own daughter to get out of her house, Villanelle then killed her and burnt down the home with the family except Bor'ka and Pytor.

Trivia[]

  • She is based on Villanelle's mother Nadezhda Vorontsova from the novels. Unlike Tatiana, Nadezhda died of cancer when Villanelle was young and was never abusive towards her.
  • Although she only appeared in one episode and got her just desserts, Tatiana's abusiveness towards Villanelle would forever have an impact on her life as she effectively made her who she is now.
