Tatsuhiko Shibusawa is the main antagonist of the 2018 anime film Bungo Stray Dogs: DEAD APPLE and its manga and light novel adaptation.
Shibusawa was involved in a bloody war that lasted 88 days in Yokohama's criminal underworld called the 'Dragon Head Conflict', he was sent by the government supposedly to help conclude the strife, only for him to exacerbate it out of his own personal agenda. He is based off of the Japanese art critic and novelist with the same name.
He is voiced by Kazuya Nakai in Japanese and Xander Mobus in English.
Appearance[]
Shibusawa is a tall young man with extremely pale skin and vacant red eyes. He has snow-white hair that reaches all the way down his back small segments of his hair were tied into braids on the side of his head with a tubular black hair accessory.
Shibusawa wears a low white low-cut shirt with loose sleeves over a black turtleneck shirt. On top, he wears a white cape that can be button up by a dark gold button. The turtleneck sleeves also reveal his fingers. He also wears black dress shoes and black nail polish.
Personality[]
Shibusawa is a man bored of everything in the world, calming it to be a sea of nothing. He spends most of his time collecting gems out of sheer boredom, earning himself the nickname 'The Collector'.
As a man of intellect, Shibusawa is crafty in the moves he makes against his enemies, he was able to use the events in the Dragon Head Conflict to his advantage to further his own goals, and he crafted his own organization to assist him at the time.
Shibusawa's intellect and boredom leads to his arrogance and to him believing that no one can surpass his expectation let alone surprise him. After Fyodor Dostoevsky killed him again so he can regain his lost memories, Shibusawa realized that what he was really after was not an ability that transcends other abilities, but someone to prevail over his power. In other words, Shibusawa was someone who was looking for something to fill the empty whole inside him similar to Dazai as in his last moments when Atsushi defeated him in their final fight, he saw the boy as an angel who has come to save him.
Background[]
Little is known about Shibusawa's past as a whole. However, six years before the events of the series and a little bite before the Dragon Head Conflict, Fyodor Told Shibusawa about the ability that "guided the envy of all ability users". This certain ability user turned out to be Atsushi Nakajima, who was still in the orphanage at the time. After learning about how rare Atsushi's ability is, Shibusawa attempts to extract it out of the boy's body with his fog ability Draconia, but he was unable to and surmised that it has not yet fully developed within Atsushi. He then resorted to using electrical torture to force it out. Ultimately, Atsushi was taken over by the tiger and killed Shibusawa.
After Shibusawa died however, his ability separated from his corpse and inherited his collection of abilities. From then on, this ability—"Tatsuhiko Shibusawa"—believed he was still human and forgot about his death.
Abilities[]
Draconia: Draconia is Shibusawa's ability. At its core, it allows him to create mist dubbed the "Dragon's Breath" which remove abilities from their ability users. The separated abilities then attempt to kill their user; if the ability succeeds, it crystallizes into a gem, appearing in Draconia's collection room, an ornate dome structured with pillars, stained glass, and countless shelves. However, despite being immersed in the fog, Fyodor's ability did not turn against, nor did it leave him like all the other abilities. Fyodor stated that he is the crime, and his ability is the punishment, both of which are closely linked. It can also be nullified by Osamu Dazai's ability, No longer Human.
After Fyodor killed Shibusawa for a second time, he used a fragment of the ability-gathering gem and embedded it in Shibusawa's separate skull, which reunited Shibusawa with his true body and form, memory intact. This turned Shibusawa into a dragon hybrid with physically powerful and agile.
