The Tattaglia Family is a Mafia family and the secondary antagonists of the Godfather film trilogy.

History[]

The Tattaglia Family is among the Five Familes of New York, with them being based primarily in Brooklyn. They were founded in the 1920s by a man named Philip Tattaglia, who was the family's Don. He had two sons Bruno and John. Their main focus was prostitution but they also dealed with narcotics, gambling, and owned night clubs. They were the least powerful and respected among the Five Families and their Don was referred to as a pimp which gave them bad reputation.

In 1945, they were associated with a top narcotics man called Virgil Sollozzo which increased their power and prestige. They also had ties with the Police as a Captain named Mark McCluskey was on their pay roll. Wanting to gain Vito Corleone's political influence they made a proposition to them through Sollozzo which was turned down by Vito. This led to them orchestrating a hit on Vito Corleone on Christmas of 1945 (through help from a traitorous soldato of the Corleones named Paulie Gatto who was on their pay roll) while also eliminating their top enforcer Luca Brasi. Soon the Corleone Family's Acting Don Sonny Corleone answered by killing Bruno Tattaglia, Virgil Sollozzo and Captain McCluskey starting a bloody war between the two families. The Tatagglia Family was also supported by the other three New York Families, primarily the Barzini Family, which was their closest allies as well as the true masterminds behind the plot to destroy the Corleone Family. By 1948, the Tattaglias were almost destroyed, but the death of Sonny Corleone put an end the the conflict as his father Vito called for a truce. Years later, in 1955, Vito died and his youngest son Michael succeeded him. His first move was to eliminate the heads of the other four famileis of New York including Philip Tattaglia who was gunned down by Rocco Lampone. Philip was succeeded by his brother Rico who became an ally to the Corleones. Their new Consigliere was a man called Osvaldo Altobello, who was a friend of the Corleones and Godfather to Connie Corleone, Michael's younger sister.

In 1979, Altobello had become the Don of the Tattaglia Family. Even though he was initially an ally to Michael, he held resentment towards him and wanted him eliminated so he could replace him. Altobello had ties within the Corleone Family, primarily a caporegime named Joey Zasa as well as ties in Sicily and the Vatican. One of his most powerful allies was an Italian politician named Licio Lucchesi who's power and influence he used to eliminate Michael. Altobello orchestrated a hit on Michael with the help of Joey Zasa and the other New York city familes in Altantic City but failed to kill him. He then planned to kill Michael in Sicily by using one of his old allies, an assassin named Mosca with a great reputation. However, Michael had already realized that Altobello was the one behind the hits and prepared a counter attack by having Altobello and his allies killed. Altobello was poisoned by Connie Corleone. It is unknown who succeeded him and what happened to the Tattaglia Family in general after this.
