Tavish Gray is a supporting antagonist in Red Dead Redemption 2. He is the patriarch of the Gray Family, a wealthy family based in Rhodes who serve as the main rivals of the Braithwaite Family.
He is voiced by Madison Arnold.
Biography[]
Tavish is the patriarch of the Gray family, a wealthy Southern family who live in Caliga Hall, a tobacco plantation near the town of Rhodes. A lifelong slave owner, he sided with the Confederates during the American Civil War and encountered financial hardships when they lost and he was forced to free his slaves. Despite this, he was able to recover somewhat through his ownership of the local saloon. He also controls the Rhodes Sheriff's Department through his brother (or possibly son) Leigh Gray, Sheriff of Rhodes, a connection he uses to gain an advantage over his rivals the Braithwaites. Tavish also has another son, Beau Gray.
Following the Van der Linde gang's arrival in Rhodes, Dutch van der Linde decides to incite a war between the Grays and Braithwaites in order to provide a smoke screen while the gang rob the Braithwaites. To this end, Arthur Morgan, John Marston and Javier Escuella meet Tavish, who asks them to steal Catherine Braithwaite's horses. Tavish directs them to a couple of fences who, he claims, will give them $5000 for the horses. Arthur, John and Javier successfully steal the horses and sell them to the fences, but only get $700, a small fraction of what Tavish promised them.
Soon after, Arthur and Sean MacGuire burn down the Gray's tobacco farm and kill several of their men in an attempt to frame the Braithwaites. However, Tavish figures out what really happened and has Leigh offer the gang a security job in Rhodes. Arthur, Sean, Bill Williamson and Micah Bell go to meet Leigh, at which point he and a group of lawmen ambush them and kill Sean. This results in a shootout in which Leigh and all his men are killed.
If the player goes to Caliga Hall after completing this mission, they will find Tavish on the back porch dead by either suicide or a heart attack. A letter from historian Malcolm Moffat can be looted from his corpse revealing that Tavish's ancestor, a Jacobite rebel, was in fact a spy for the English. This stain on his legacy, alongside the death of Leigh and the destruction of his farm, was enough to take the life of Tavish.
