The trio of Team Rocket agents consisting of Jessie, James, and Meowth are the main antagonists of the Pokemon anime series.
A group of incompetent Team Rocket grunts, they are the archenemies of Ash Ketchum and his friends, having attempted to steal his partner Pikachu for their own since the beginning of Ash's journey and following him across the Pokémon world. While proud to be villains and even somewhat egotistical, their plans and ploys to steal Pikachu have almost universally ended in failure from their sheer incompetence, constant underestimation of their foes, technical backfires, and sometimes, when they actually might succeed, just plain bad luck. They are then always blasted off to space. In Black and White, instead of blasting off, they used jetpacks to escape until reaching the series' ending, they return on blasting off again. In Sun and Moon, instead of getting blasting off again, they were carried away by a wild Bewear to its home cave.
They have a rivalry with the Team Rocket Duo, Cassidy and Butch who they look down the trio and called them losers.
Personality[]
Jessie is the de facto leader and is significantly the more aggressive and hotheaded of the group. Extremely bossy she very often treats the others, especially James, as her lackeys but she does genuinely care for them as well. In times of relaxation, Jessie is also very laid back in contrast to her usual demeanor, however she remains very easy to anger even in such times. She is incredibly vain, believing her beauty to be unparalleled and becomes extremely wrathful when insulted, such wrath at times makes her feared even by her teammates. She has a rivalry with Cassidy.
James generally serves as the labor and grunt of the team. He is almost completely subservient to Jessie, taking her abuse while rarely ever fighting back because he knows it is ultimately harmless. At times slow, James does possess a very keen intellect in certain things, taking the team by surprise and times even shock when he demonstrates vast knowledge on said topics. He is also more often than not the straight man to Jessie's cockiness and aggression and Meowth's wise guy demeanor. That being said, he is just as flamboyant and arrogant as the others. He has a rivalry with Butch but also calling him by names mainly "Biff".
Meowth can be considered the brains of the team. While just as hotheaded as the others at times even as wrathful as Jessie, Meowth is capable at coming up with genuinely good plans despite the fact that they almost all end up in failure for various reasons. He is very greedy and power-hungry and constantly fantasizes of being promoted into a position of favor of Giovanni, holding immense disdain for his Persian. Also, being able to speak to other Pokémon, Meowth is invaluable with the information he can get from talking to them.
As a whole, the three regularly bicker and lash out at one another in comical violence, and Jessie and Meowth can at times gang up on James. But the three are true friends and will go to any extreme to protect or save one another. This also applies to their own Pokémon, as Jessie and James show true heroism and selflessness when it comes to protecting theirs. While they constantly kidnap innocent Pokémon, and at times even abuse and attack them, they do not take pleasure in it and will not stand idly by while innocent Pokémon are being harmed and it isn't their own doing. As James puts it, "We're bad not insensitive!".
More times than once however, the trio have demonstrated genuine evil in their ambitious pursuits, such as threatening Pokémon's well-beings and even to people, such as when they attempted to poach sick and injured Pokémon in a hospital even after Doctor Proctor helped Jessie's Arbok and even attempted to attack Ash and his friends with a needle while they were restrained, they once attempted to blow up a canyon to steal Pokémon fossils, showing a callous disregard for the people already in the canyon digging for fossils, they once deliberately tried to murder Ash with the Indigo League Central Flame (only for the spirit of the flame, Moltres, to spare Ash and send Team Rocket blasting off), showing they were willing to murder a child, they threatened to blow up the showboat of a crew of performers (their home and livelihood) to force them to surrender so they could steal their Pokémon, and endangered the life of a baby Amaura they abducted from its Aurorus mother when it was trying to keep cold while they turned up their vehicle's heat, and many times they've attempted to steal Pokémon from anyone, including young children. So, while the trio have proven they're not without some good qualities, they are still capable of committing despicable and wicked acts of evil without shame or guilt, even after they were shown kindness and compassion.
