Now that you can see, there ain’t no stopping me

The city’s on 11, it’s two thousand degrees
Something big is coming, but it’s just the beginning (this is just the beginning, just the beginning)
Neon lights flicker, DJ spins the track
The boys are in sync, and there’s no turning back

~ The Technocyte Coda in the song "Party Of Your Lifetime".

The Technocyte Coda are minor antagonists in the MMO third-person shooter Warframe.

Cloned from the popular 90s boy band On-lyne, the Technocyte Coda were created using the Techrot to be obedient replacements for the real band members. However, the Technocyte Coda swiftly came under the control of the Techrot hive mind, breaking free and seeking to spread their unifying melodies throughout the city-state of Höllvania.

They are the Infestation's answer to the Warframes and particularly dangerous opponents.

Biography[]

Background[]

Towards the end of the 1990s, Gregory V., On-lyne's manager from their label HitMaker Music, became increasingly irritated by the five band members' perceived constant whining and insubordination. When the Höllvanian government approached him with an offer to replace them with in their words "predictable, standardized, and controlled" clones, Gregory was all too eager to accept. Covertly collecting hair from their dressing rooms and sending it to the laboratory, Gregory kept close tabs on the development of the Coda.

After initial successes in replicating On-lyne's voices, the Director of the Coda program suggested using the prototypes to give spoken interviews with pre-written texts as a form of field test, with Gregory keeping the real band around for in-person appearances. What happened afterwards isn't clear, but it can be assumed that the Coda mutated soon after. Instead of the perfect replicas they were meant to be, their bodies became twisted and partially fused with their clothes and the technology they were close to. While their pre-programmed personalities remained, the influence of the Techrot hive mind coerced them to escape their bonds and run rampant in the city to assimilate all of Höllvania.

Techrot Encore[]

Taking the fight to the Coda, their attention is drawn whenever a Drifter collects one of their infested mixtapes, randomly dropped by a Techrot enemy, and tries to place it into a nearby computer system. Doing so will cause a new instance of the Technocyte Coda to emerge and start to hunt the Drifter. A single frontman is chosen to represent the Coda collective and the Drifter's computer back in their hideout in Höllvania Central Mall will start to glitch out from the corrupting influence of the Techrot.

While out on missions to fight against the presence of the Scaldra and the Techrot in Höllvania, the Drifter and their team will occasionally be ambushed by a duet of the other four Coda members. It is in these battles that the Drifter has the opportunity to weaken the Technocyte Coda with antivirus programs injected via stabbing them with their hacking tool. Once the Coda's malware disinfection reaches 100% and the correct antivirus is used on them, the Coda will flee through time into the far future of the Origin System, preparing for their final performance in a massive Infested stadium floating in Earth's orbit.

The Drifter or their Tenno counterpart then pursue the Coda to the stadium and confront them in a showdown against all five members at the same time. Upon the Technocyte Coda's defeat, the player then has a choice to either vanquish the Coda's frontman or convert him into an ally, severing him from the hive mind's control. Regardless of choice, the player will be rewarded with cosmetic items, but choosing to destroy the Coda outright will gain them live heartcells, which they can exchange for powerful Coda weapon variants.

Trivia[]

  • On-lyne, the boy band the Coda are cloned from, are directly inspired by 90s boy bands such as NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys.
  • The Coda themselves are in part based on viruses that were often embedded inside music files people would download from sketchy websites, due to their music theme and partially digital nature.
  • While not outright confirmed, the way the Coda came into being and the purpose they were created for can also be seen as a critique of the spread of AI-generated art that began to gain widespread traction in the 2020s, and especially its use in trying to copy the likeness and voices of actors.
  • The Technocyte Coda are the Infested counterparts to the Grineer Kuva Liches and the Corpus Sisters of Parvos, but they have some notable differences compared to their predecessors:
    • Liches and Sisters carry the rewards for beating them on their person, most notably their custom weapons. The Coda do not use weapons and instead grant players tokens that can be exchanged for an Infested weapon of their choice, rather than having to look for an Adversary that has the weapon they want.
    • Liches and Sisters are fought by their lonesome, while the Coda always invade a mission in pairs and are fought as a group of five in their showdown.
    • Liches and Sisters have randomly chosen personality types and appearances that differentiate them from one another. Barring a color change, the Coda are all identical and the only thing that changes is the band member that takes the lead.
