Patrick Vaughn is one of the supporting antagonists of the Chicago P.D. episode "8:30".

Background[]

The son of the racist criminal Frank Powell, he was very close to his father. One day the police would raid the Powell family home, while Ted and his mother were present, everything ended in a shooting in which Ted's mother dies, the home's destruction, and his father's arrest. This event was a shocking point in the young Powell's life, since he would begin to frequent radical anti-government groups, as he waited years for the CPD and CFD to admit error and release his father until he finally decides to plan an attack against the city of Chicago.

To that end, he joined an extremist website, where he befriended two men from the same extremist groups, Paul Watts and Patrick Vaughn. They also came to know Ryan Wilcox man who owned a garage. They all conspired to strike at a major event. He supplied them with two cars with bombs inside, explaining where to place them, programming Watts's bomb to go off in the middle of a police gala and Vaughn's to go off when the firefighters and medics arrive to help the victims Powell would have a third bomb made, he planned to place it on police headquarters.

A Dark Day[]

Although he does not physically appear in the episode, his plan is carried out by his associates Paul Watts and Patrick Vaughn, but not in the way he expected, since Watts made a mistake and the first bomb, which was supposed to go off at 8:00 PM, went off in the morning.

8:30 PM[]

As a result of the bombing, the hospital was greatly damaged, and many people were injured or became casualties. A taskforce of law enforcement was assembled, and the second bomb was discovered and deactivated by firefighters.

Powell is first seen among the crowd, looking at the damage his partners had caused in the hospital, before he exchanges glances with Sgt. Hank Voight who takes note of him before he goes on his way. Powell decides to kill Watts for the mistake he made when the first bomb went off and tried to make it look like a suicide. When Intelligence detained Vaughn, he revealed Powell was the leader and after seeing his face, Voight recalls him outside with the crowd. CPD discovered his motive is because of his father, so they visit him to see if he knows anything, but Frank was actually proud of his son's stance and refused to give him up.

Powell posts a video online on a radical website, in which he expresses his resentment towards Chicago firefighters and police, also explains his motives and officially declares war on Chicago firefighters and police. He also makes it clear, that he will target friends and family affiliated with both departments as part of his vendetta against the city. Soon Powell heads off to pick up his last bomb to be planted at police headquarters, where he planned to kill both the policemen and the firefighters. Powell would go to Ryan Wilcox, garage and kill him. He would then drive the dead man's van to place the third bomb in a building.

Powell stood atop a building so he can see all the chaos he was going to cause, but the Chicago police were hot on Powell's trail. When Powell goes down the elevator, Detectives Erin Lindsay and Jay Halstead intercept him. Seeing the cops, Powell shoots them and then flees to the top of the building, Powell stays on the roof of the building, in the middle of a shootout with the police, until Voight reaches the roof, yelling that he wanted Powell alive. Powell comes out of hiding and tries to shoot Voight, but Voight is quicker and shoots him in the shoulder first, Voight grabs Powell's jacket and Powell mockingly asks Voight how many cops he had killed, and if any of them were his friends. Infuriated, Voight brings the injured man to the ledge of the building, where he forces him to watch as they defuse the bomb he had planted at the van. Once it was dismantled, Voight tells Powell that his plan had failed. Unremorseful, the defiant Powell reiterates that it had actually been a good day for him, earning him a well-deserved punch in the face by Voight, before Halstead slapped the cuffs on Powell while ensuring they hurt him. He is subsequently taken away and loaded in the police car.

He is ultimately incarcerated, for all his bombings and murders.

Personality[]

Powell has shown himself to be horrendous person. Despite his father clearly being a horrible man, Powell blames overs for him being arrested. Powell is not above murdering hundreds of innocent people to achieve his goals. This extends to those in his inner circle as he killed two of his associates Paul Watts and Ryan Wilcox as well as not seeming to car about what happens to Patrick Vaughn. When he is caught by Voight Powell shows no remorse for what he did and even says that today was a good day.
