John Edward Gammel, more commonly referred to throughout the movie as Teddy, and situationally John G, is the villainous deuteragonist of the 2000 movie Memento. He is an officer of the law that assisted Leonard Shelby in locating and killing the man that assaulted, raped, and potentially murdered his wife.
He was portrayed by Joe Pantoliano, who also played Francis Fratelli in The Goonies, Caesar in Bound, Ralph Cifaretto in The Sopranos, Gabe Ugliano in Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Albert Arlington in Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Stickyfins Whiting in SpongeBob SquarePants.
Biography[]
Teddy was the officer assigned to the case of Leonard's wife's attack. He believed Leonard when others didn't, and helped him locate the man responsible for the attack. He then watched as Leonard killed him, taking a polaroid photo of him to reserve the event in memory.
A year later, Teddy would still help Leonard look for John G, as Leonard couldn't remember killing him. This led to Teddy creating puzzles and mysteries for Leonard, to keep him entertained and feeling alive. He would eventually make Leonard kill a man named Jimmy Grantz, which was where Leonard recognized what Teddy was making him do. Before he forgot, Leonard prepared to give himself a tattoo of Teddy's license plate, setting forth the chain of events of his amnesic episodes, eventually resulting in Teddy's death at the end of the movie.
