Ted Bower, also known as the Teddy Bomber, is the secondary antagonist of the Cowboy Bebop episode "Cowboy Funk". He is a terrorist/activist who seeks to deface skyscrapers which he views as symbols of the unnecessary colonization of planets.
He was voiced by Takaya Hoshi in Japanese, the late Tom Wyner in the English dub, and is portrayed by Rodney Cook in the live-action adaptation.
Biography[]
Teddy Bomber is first seen planting a bomb disguised as a teddy bear at an airport. Here, he is confronted by the protagonist, Spike Spiegel, who attempts to apprehend him. Bomber attempts to tell Spike his manifesto, only to be interrupted when rival bounty hunter, Andy, tries to intercept the bounty head. Not knowing what Teddy Bomber looks like, Andy mistakes Spike for his target, which inadvertently allows Teddy Bomber to escape and successfully destroy the airport.
Later, Bomber is shown disguised as a teddy bear at a masquerade ball. Spike and Jet manage to corner him, but again they are interrupted by Andy, who proceeds to sabotage the mission, allowing Bomber to destroy yet another building and escape again. Later that day, Bomber sends a message to be read on the bounty hunters tv show Big Shots, vowing to blow up the city hall.
Meeting Spike in front of city hall, Bomber is once again interrupted by Andy, who proceeds to divert Spike's attention away from Bomber. Enraged, Bomber sets off an explosion to get their attention before leading them into an elevator he had rigged to explode once it reaches the top floor. As Spike and Andy fight their way out of the elevator just before it explodes, Bomber is easily knocked out by Faye Valentine and taken into custody.
Teddy Bomber is last seen in a prison wagon talking to a sympathetic guard. Here, he finally reveals his motivation: he was concerned with humanity's capitalism without principles or philosophy, resulting exorbitant planetary colonization and ravaging of planets in the process along with rampant unchecked media propaganda. So he intended to destroy buildings created by such capitalism as a wake-up call so that humanity would stop ravaging planets through colonization and learn to rediscover past humanity's original pioneering spirit and live together as one. Just as he's about to finish, Andy (now a samurai known as Musashi) is shown riding off into the sunset next to the prison wagon. Seeing what he perceives as the Andy's endless 'frontier spirit' not afraid to face challenges, Ted admits in realization that his worry was an empty one.
Trivia[]
- Teddy Bomber is speculated to be based on real-life eco-terrorist Ted Kaczynski, better known as the "Unabomber".
