Professor Teiji Moriya is the main antagonist of the anime movie Detective Conan: The Time-Bombed Skyscraper/Case Closed: The Time Bombed Skyscraper. He is a renowed architect who designs several luxurious houses. However, it's later revealed that he wants to destroy them all because they doesn't fit his obsession of perfection, that is, to be completely symmetrical.
He was voiced by the late Tarō Ishida.
Biography[]
In his first appearance, Teiji invited Shinichi Kudo to a garden party he was hosting. However, since Shinichi was currently in the form of Conan Edogawa, he was unable to go himself. Thus Conan, Ran and Kogoro went to he party in his mansion, where Teiji explain his work and how other architects only see this as a way of making money. During the party, he gave his guest a riddle hoping someone would find the answer, who was later revealed to be Conan as he figures out the riddle (and humiliated Kogoro). Later he shows Conan and Ran his room full of his designs, including the Kurokawa household (where in the cold opening of the movie shows a murder case). As Ran and Conan are impressed by his designs, he showed them one of his greatest designs, the Beika City Building, where Ran explains that she and Shinichi are going to them for his birthday.
Later, while disguised as a mad bomber and using a voice changer, Teiji called Shinichi and told him to give him his cell number as he revealed that one of his bombs will kills a group of kids that he planted in a toy plane he gave them earlier. Hearing that, Conan rushed to the park to see that Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko were playing with the plane. Conan then grabbed the control of the plane and used his sneakers, kicked the control at the plane and hit it and caused it to explode. Later, as Teiji called on Shinichi's cell number, Conan answered it and he demanded where's Shinichi (Not knowing that Conan is really Shinichi). He then told Conan about the next bombing, which will happen at 1:00 pm at the train station inside a cat box, which Conan manage to get the box and the cat inside out before it exploded.
Teiji then called again, this time informing the police that he has planted bombs somewhere in the train yard at Yamanote line and warns them that if any of the trains slow down below 60 MPH, there would be some exploding, which resulting in the trains to speed up to 70 MPH and continue going. Later Conan used his Bowtie to call Inspector Megure and informs him that the bombs are on the tracks, and that they had a 13 second time on them where is solar power and when the cart over it, it will count down until one second where the sun will it and cause it to reset the timer back to 13 seconds. After they manages to get the bombs off the rails and find the timers.
Later that night as Conan, Kogoro, Megure, and Shiratori went to Teiji home as they suspect that the Bomber (not knowing it's Teiji) is connected to Teiji as some of them were created by Teiji himself. Later as Conan (using the Bowtie as Shinichi) called Megure and the others and informs him about the bomber and who they are but before he revealed, he told them to go upstairs to Teiji's gallery of his earlier work (but not before going to pick up his lighter in his studies), where just before Shinichi was going to reveal the Bomber, Kogoro (in another one of his failed attempts to solve the case) believe Shiratori was the one who did it, only to be told he was wrong as Shinichi revealed that Teiji was the bomber (which made Kogoro angry about why would an Architect destroy his creations) and revealed his two motives of why he did it.
The first was the Teiji Moriya was known to be an Architect who had an obsession with symmetry as most of his buildings are shown to have symmetric designs as he wanted to destroy his earlier designs and replace them with new one with symmetrical structures. His second motive was that he wanted to get back at Shinichi for ruining one of his greatest plans; It seems that during an earlier case when Shinichi (before being Conan) solved a case where Mayor Okamoto (who was drinking and driving) killed a woman who was crossing the street while his son tried to take the blame for his father's crime. It seems that the incident caused The Mayor to lose his chances of being Nishita Town's governor, which would have Teiji's dream of creating a symmetrical city be shut down indefinitely.
At first, he told them that unless he has physical evidence of him being the Bomber, there's no proof but Conan then told Shiratori to look at the model of Teiji failed dream and found the wig, beard and sunglasses of the bomber, causing Teiji to expose himself as he thought that he hid them in his studies. Conan arrived and revealed that the wig and beard are fake as well as the sunglasses being his and he blacken to make them look like sunglasses, as this would expose him as the Bomber, but before he could be arrested, he revealed a trump card; The Lighter he had is actually a detonator and will blow up the manor as he rigged it just in case. However, Conan revealed that while in the study to make the fake wig and beard, he removed the batteries from the detonator, causing him to be shocked as he was finally arrested. However, Teiji revealed that there's one more error left, as the Beika City Building as he revealed that not only was it his greatest creation but also his ultimate disgrace as the sides of the building are not the same. To make matters worse, Ran is there waiting for Shinichi for his birthday.
After the first bombed exploded, Kogoro confronted Teiji about his daughter and her suppose death, only for him to inform him that first bomb only sealed the exist. As Kogoro tries to attack Teiji, Conan notice something in his shirt pocket and found the plans for the bomb, just as Conan rush to save Ran, Teiji told Conan to tell Shinichi that the last bomb has an extra three-minute delay that he must solve before it exploded. Later, Teiji arrives at the site of the disaster as he plans to see his ultimate disgrace be destroyed.
At the end, after Ran cut the Blue Wire and stopped the bomb, Teiji, with his mouth opened and shocked, is horrified that not only was his master plan to destroy the building is ruined by also his ultimate disgrace will continue to go on.
Trivia[]
- Moriya's name was based on James Moriarty's, alluding to his status as an archenemy of Shinichi (who was inspired by Sherlock Holmes himself).
