Biography[]
Background[]
The Tenebrous Doll is a famous horror movie monster, especially popular in the Lemon Tree neighborhood. When its feature film was announced, a bunch of toys of the character began to be sold in stores, under the name "Tenderness Doll", a nice and cute doll that could change to a tenebrous personality with the push of a button.
Mr. Carlito, Maggy's father, decided to give the doll as a gift to his daughter after "feeling hypnotized by the doll", saying that the doll is just a harmless toy, he turns it on.
Present[]
After being turned on, the doll runs away and hides around the house, beginning her reign of terror. She knocks out Maggy's father with a broom and hides again. Maggy remembers that at the end of the movie the doll blows up the house she was attacking. The real doll soon appears with explosives looking for someone. Maggy and her father try to stop her, but they attack her with a pan. Fortunately, Maggy's mother grabs the doll from behind and removes its batteries.
Mr. Carlito throws the doll out of the house in the middle of a storm. Lightning strikes the doll and turns it back on, locking it in its evil personality. The doll goes skipping and laughing through the rain, shouting its catchphrase.
The doll would make periodic appearances in the comics, becoming one of the most cruel and dangerous enemies of the gang, always seeking to spread fear and pain wherever she went.
She would spend some time hiding in Denise's attic, where she would terrorize Denise and Monica, apparently just for the fun of it.
After a long time, she returns with a plan to eliminate the entire gang. She attacks them during an expedition to Spider Kangaroo Hill, she sets up several traps around the place and scares the gang, causing the four to split up. She manages to capture Monica and ties her to a branch. To make sure Monica doesn't escape, she fills the ground with worms.
The doll confronts Jimmy Five and Smudge, but the branch can't support Monica's weight and she falls right on top of the doll and the worms. She struggles in despair, completely destroying the doll. Smudge picks up her body and throws her into the forest.
She later reappears, now considered an urban legend, along with other urban legends, who kidnap Smudge and plan to turn him into an urban legend like them, however she is not the main antagonist of the story, but rather Cumulus, who was manipulating the legends to exact his revenge on Smudge. When she and the other legends find out, they are not at all happy with him.
After a long time, the gang eventually forgets about her and thinks she has been defeated for good, but she returns as the main antagonist in issue 500, where she, disguised as Sunny, travels back in time to change history and make herself the main character of the comics since she was tired of being a secondary character.
When her disguise is discovered, she tries to use the same worm trick against Monica, but the girl had overcome her fear thanks to the "power of friendship". She and her friends even start singing together, the speech and the scene itself are so cheesy that the doll starts to melt, and is finally defeated.
Personality[]
The Tenebrous Doll is one of the most unique villains of the Monica Gang, unlike other antagonists who are just troublemakers or rivals, the doll is truly sadistic and doesn't seem to have any other motive than wanting to hurt and kill people, while other villains have the minimum of redeemable qualities the doll has none, she always has her macabre smile on her cloth face when she is hurting or scaring an adult or child.
Unlike many villains who ignore their weaknesses, the Tenebrous Doll is well aware of her weaknesses, preferring to plan in the shadows before attacking, she strategically switches to her "tenderness" side to deceive people and uses her hypnosis and possession abilities to make others do her work for her.
At first she was just a misanthropic terrorist who wanted to kill anyone who crossed her path, but she gained the ambition to want to conquer the entire universe, but she still maintains her clever tactics and sadism, preferring to erase Monica from history rather than simply defeat her.
Trivia[]
- It's still unknown on how she came to life.
- In the Great Emotions edition, she mentions having originated from the Flying Donkey. However, until then, there has been no further development or confirmation about this in other stories.
- Despite first appearing in a Maggy story first and being mostly associated with her, the Tenebrous Doll is one of the few villains that don't have a specific rival and is rather considered an enemy of the whole gang.
