If you found a cockroach in your kitchen, would you pick it up and eat it? Probably not. But you'd kill it. Thinking about it, you don't even know why you'd kill it. But you'd kill it with everything you've got, right? That's how it is. This is the war between man and bug over who will continue to exist as a species. The ones who lose... are the vermin.
~ Michelle K. Davis describing Terraformars' behavior and nature.
Most human beings hold no grudges, and do not wish to kill other people. Because above all, they do not want to lose "husbands", "brothers", and "sons". That is why to human beings, war is truly a "last resort". However, these creatures are different. They have the "same" "deep attachment" toward a "husband" as they would a roadside "flower". To them, all life is "equal" - except human beings. "They show no discrimination." Because no discrimination means that they do not have favourites. That is why such a strategy is possible.
~ Narrator describing Terraformars in Chapter 200.

Terraformars are evolved humanoid cockroaches who live on Mars and the titular main antagonists of the anime/manga same name. They possess immense strength and endurance as a normal human is no match for them. They also appear to be somewhat highly intelligent and have a natural hatred for humanity.

Appearance[]

Because of Mars' perpetually cold climate, Terraformars have evolved into towering humanoids standing between five to nine feet tall, with naturally extremely muscular build, brownish-black carapace, a pair of functional wings retracting from their backs, no genitalia, a pair of antenna protrusions and cerci. Their faces have two large unblinking eyes with large pupils, elongated upper lip, small pointy ears at the back of their head, small nose, enlarged mouth, and hair-like biological structures running down their neck and head.

Behavior[]

To be brief, the Terraformars are not afraid of death. Because they do not think of "their life" or the "life of their comrades", only the "execution of their nature". And because it seems that they do not have "individuality" or are able to separate "themselves" and what is "outside" them.
~ Tatsushiro Someya describing Terraformars, Chapter 202.

Terraformars are hostile, unpredictable, intelligent and extremely dangerous, bearing an exceptional instinctive pure hatred towards humanity, the same that humans feel towards cockroaches. As such, they kill and slaughter humans on sight in extremely brutal, yet exceedingly methodical, the most notable example being Terraformars pulling out Bourne's spinal cord and using it chop off his fellow comrades' heads in a quick succession. They would also sometimes collect corpses of slaughtered people to devour them and assimilate their special abilities, attained through Bugs Surgery.

Powers and Abilities[]

Standard[]

Blattodea physiology: In 21st Century, mankind has send cockroaches alongside a modified type of algae to Mars in effort to terraform the planet, as Earth began suffering from the effects of overpopulation. However, freezing temperatures mixed with constant bombardment of cosmic radiation forced insects to evolve, mutating them into humanoid monsters over the course of five centuries. It was also implied several times in the manga that Terraformars' evolution was not natural, being created by the third party to control human population. Their set of powers and physical attributes includes:

  • Immense strength: Under proper conditions, cockroaches are able to move an object exceeding their mass by fifty times, much like rhinoceros beetle. Therefore, Terraformars possess tremendous amount of muscle strength, making them strong enough to effortlessly kill ordinary adult human beings with their blows, as well as hit Donatello K. Davis hard enough to make floor of BUGS2 spaceship crack and nearly match Michelle K. Davis in gripping contest. Terraformars often kill humans by tearing off their heads or dismembering them, with one specimen being able to easily tear out Bourne's spine and decapitate his comrades by swinging it like a katana. Their superhuman strength also allows them to launch boulders from slingshot hard enough to tear Adolf Reinhard's body apart from hundreds of feet away.
    • Burrowing: Terraformars can dig in solid ground, which allowed them to ambush Squad 1 in the climax of season one of the anime.
  • Immense durability: Thanks to their sturdy carapace, Terraformars are much more resistant to physical damage compared to human beings. They are able to walk through gunfire of machine gun without flinching, survive point-blank explosion of God Lee's hydrogen peroxide & hydroquinone gas blasts unharmed, survive Akita Nanao's powder explosion in the movie, and withstand extremely powerful blows from the likes of Bao Zhilan, Ichiro Haruma, Sylvester Asimov or Keiji Onizuka. As demonstrated by Invoker, Terraformars can survive indirect lightning strikes of exceedingly high voltage, provided someone will be there to resuscitate them shortly afterwards.
  • Immense speed: Terraformars are capable of running and moving at speeds beyond that of finest human athletes, reaching up to 320 kilometers per hour (198.8 miles per hour) in a single leap. They are easily able to move faster than eye can follow and outmaneuver most BUGS-enhanced humans, decapitating Elena Perepelkina before she was able to fire a net and catch Kanako Sanjo mid-air.
  • Flight: Terraformars' back carapace can tear open, revealing a pair of functional insect wings that allow them to fly at immense speeds despite their enormous mass. They were shown to fly at stratosphere-level heights, allowing a swarm of them to catch BUGS2 spaceship and tear it apart. Some variants such as Leaf Cutter Ant Terraformar lack this ability due to increased mass.
  • Wall scaling: Terraformars have shown several times ability to stick to the walls like real insects, allowing them to scale vertical or irregularly shaped walls with ease.
  • Weapon proficiency: Terraformars are quick to adapt upon getting any new weapon in their hands, mastering the use of handguns by the time of BUGS2 accident. They were also shown to use clubs, knives, daggers, slingshots and torn body parts as weapons.
  • Parthenogenesis: Terraformars reproduce asexually through storing a massive amount of eggs within their body, which are released upon death. After a short period of time, two fully-grown specimens are born.
    • Reproductive evolution: In the same scene, Terraformars demonstrated immunity to mind control, shown when Victoria Wood stabbed two of them through brains, using emerald cockroach warp, whose venom removes flight-or-fight instincts in cockroaches and makes them susceptible to mind control; according to her statement, this method worked on past Terraformars, which indicates some sort of rapid evolution.

Unique[]

Terraformars have the ability to either spontaneously develop new adaptations through reproductive mutations or by implanting Mosaic Organs from decreased humans, allowing them to replicate and "absorb" powers, sometimes at the loss of some of their base abilities.

  • Evolved Terraformar: This variant, created through a mutation in Terraformar's eggs, has genius-level intelligence and absolute control over regular specimens, is immune to emerald cockroach wasp's mind control venom, has greater degree of speed and agility, and can use martial arts in combat. These specimens are bald and have dot-like markings on their forehead. First seen during the BUGS2 Arc, a pair of these hatched from eggs and killed Victoria Wood, before one was killed by Ichiro Haruma with the help of Thien, while the other killed Adolf Reinhard twenty years later and was later killed by Joseph Gustav Newton. It is then reborn during Earth Arc, where it aligns itself with China.
  • Steninae Terraformar: The first seen modified Terraformar in the series, having abilities of BUGS2 member, Tejas Viji. It can launch itself forward like a rocket using holes on its back, discharging gas that allows it to cross 150 times its body length within a second, or 945 kilometres per hour (587.24 miles per hour). After killing Viktor, Steninae Terraformar rips Elena Perepelkina's head off and tries to kill Sylvester Asimov, only for him to transform and nearly rip its lower jaw off. It then gets captured by Ivan Perepelkin after being drugged with jimsonweed toxin.
  • Bombardier Beetle Terraformar: Second modified Terraformar seen in the series, who stole powers of BUGS2 member, God Lee. This creature can generate and shoot a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and hydroquinone gases from its palms, releasing a fire-like blasts, having killed Sheila Levitt with that ability, or create a large explosion equal to a flamethrower. It is visually identical to a regular Terraformar. It died by having its head crushed by Marcos E. Garcia.
  • Diving Beetle Terraformar: A Terraformar modified using body parts of BUGS2 member John Welthork. It has the ability to fight effectively underwater, has detachable oxygen mask-like organ to spend longer periods of time with sharp teeth, and can counter Michelle K. Davis' power to make Terraformars explode through its low thermal emission. One tried to drag Michelle K. Davis underwater, however Akari Hizamaru saved her using his nets, getting cockroach on land where it was dismembered and caught alive.
  • Desert Locust Terraformar: A variant created using BUGS2 member, Thien's body parts. It has enlarged muscular legs with exposed tendons and muscles, having ability to deliver powerful kicks that can dismember humans. Attacking Squad 2's vehicle, Desert Locust Terraformar engages in a fight with Akari Hizamaru before retreating, only to have its wing torn off by a rock thrown by Alex K. Stewart and then get beat to unconsciousness by Michelle K. Davis, also being caught alive.
  • Pachyrhynchus infernalis Terraformar: A Terraformar made using body parts of Jaina Eisenstein, the BUGS2 member. It has superior physical strength and is nearly invulnerable thanks to its extremely thick carapace, to the point where even its eyes are difficult to damage, however it cannot fly due too high body mass. It attacked Squad 1 on their second day on Mars, being accompanied by Silk Moth Terraformar and about thirty regular troops. After a vicious fight with Keiji Onizuka, Terraformar eventually died. Later, another one emerges during the Earth Arc, when it feasts upon a seal in Hokkaido, Japan.
  • Silk Moth Terraformar: A white fur-covered Terraformar created with Akita Nanao's body parts. It possesses the power to generate and manipulate strings powerful enough to support weight of multiple humans, throw rocks, entangle opponents, and has enhanced hearing. It dies after a vicious volley of sting blows from Shokichi Komachi, angered since Nanao used to be his classmate and love interest.
  • Mole Cricket Terraformar: An extremely versatile variant of Terraformar with abilities of Yang Huwan. It not only has a thick carapace protecting it from attacks, but it also has "seven tricks", which include jumping, burrowing, flying, climbing, swimming, running and chirping. It attacks after setting the nearby area on fire, nearly getting apart by berserk Akari Hizamaru, but he halts and entangles a Terraformar in springs.
  • Rainbow Stag Beetle Terraformar: A Terraformar with abilities of BUGS2 member, Maria Viren. Its exoskeleton can serve as a light amplifier when the area is set ablaze, allowing it to camouflage. It is quickly killed by Michelle K. Davis when she inhales venom into its face, blowing a Terraformar apart.
  • Demon Dragonfly Terraformar: Having powers of BUGS2 member, Toshio Blight, Demon Dragonfly possesses vastly enhanced flying capabilities on pair with white-throated needletail, as well as "dynamic vision", a compound vision composed out of 28,000 eyes to allow it to see rapidly moving objects. This green-eyed, orange-striped creature first attacks Squad 3 during their fight with Squad 4, then infiltrates the ship and engages in a fight with Keiji Onizuka. Later, hundreds of these take a part in a full-scale war on Japan.
  • Asssassin Terraformar: A group of smaller, more slender Terraformars created by a mutation a week after The Invoker's death. They attack Squad 3 and 4 alongside Demon Dragonfly Terraformar as a part of their training. They die when Hong uses her power to transmit extremely toxic bacteria into the environment, killing them in large numbers.
  • Bullet Ant Terraformar: This Terraformar is equipped with powers of Donatello K. Davis, and likewise has even higher degree of strength than normal variant, being able to send Michelle K. Davis flying with just a flick of its fingers, while its muscle mass allows it to contain volatile chemicals of bullet ant to prevent self-destruction. It fights Michelle K. Davis and while it perishes, it managed to dealt sufficient amount of damage to her, making her defenseless against Bao Zhilan.
  • Snail-Eating Beetle Terraformar: A Terraformar with powers of BUGS 2 member, Redon Bergsmuller. It can exhale digestive fluids composed out of methacrylic acid, allowing it to dissolve bagworm moth's threads, create a smoke cover, render humans blind and dissolve snails. This variant lacks flight, is immune to its own acid and equipped with Victoria Wood's gun.
  • Archer Fish Terraformar: Possesses the power of Annex I member Marcia to shoot high-pressure jet of water out of its left hand, which can puncture human flesh. However, it requires a tank of water to replenish its ammunition. After rendering Alex K. Stewart helpless with its power, Archer Fish Terraformar was killed by Joseph Gustav Newton.

Weaknesses[]

  • Oxygen deprivation: As a living organisms, Terraformars still require oxygen and can be killed if its concentration drops to a very low level, as demonstrated during their fight with Donatello K. Davis.
  • Electricity: Terraformars are vulnerable to high-voltage electricity, especially when conducted by metal objects such as knives. Throughout their entire fight with Adolf Reinhard, part-electric eel, Terraformars' flesh was charred black from their power output, while their organs were shocked to death. However, they can be resuscitated if lightning does not strike them directly, as it was the case with Invoker.
  • Cutting attacks: The easiest way to dispatch a Terraformar is to cut through its body with extremely sharp blade, such as swords used by both George Smiles and Joseph Gustav Newton, or by sharp feathers of white-throated needletail (Kanako Sanjo).
  • Venom: Terraformars are highly sensitive to venom generated by Japanese giant hornet (Shokichi Komachi), deathstalker scorpion (Nina Yujik) or blue-ringed octopus (Liu Yiwu), which kills them instantly.
    • Mind control: Regular type of Terraformars can be controlled by the venom of emerald cockroach wasp (Victoria Wood), which destroys a part of their brain and eliminates flight-or-fight instincts, essentially turning the insect into a zombie. However, evolved Terraformars such as Invoker are immune to this ability.
    • Explosion inducement: Terraformars can be killed by blast ant (Michelle K. Davis)'s venom, which causes them to bloat up hideously and explode like a water balloon from inside out. This ability can be countered by Diving Beetle Terraformar's cool body temperature or armored types like Bullet Ant Terraformar.
    • Hallucination inducement: Terraformars can be terrified by hallucinations induced by thornapple (Ivan Perepelkin), and killed if overdosed with toxin.
    • Lethal bacteria: Terraformars can easily perish regardless of their number if they find themselves within radius range of Hong's bacteria emission. Their only counter to this is wearing a protective suit.
  • Terraformar net: Cockroaches can be immobilized by a special modified net that is designed to withstand three times of Terraformar's strength. This weapon is countered by Bombardier Beetle Terraformar, who can shoot superheated gas blast even if immobilized.
