Tex Hex is the main antagonist of the 1987 animated series BraveStarr. He is BraveStarr's archenemy, the leader of the Carrion Bunch and servant of Stampede.
He was voiced by Charlie Adler.
Biography[]
Tex Hex was once known as Tex. A purple skinned prospector, he was the mining partner of Angus McBride and lover of a kind woman named Ursula. At some point, he was persuaded by McBride to travel to New Texas for kerium, the rarest element in the universe. Tex originally planned to return to his home planet as soon as he had enough kerium to build a house and marry Ursula, but his greed from the promise of wealth is what corrupted him.
On New Texas, Tex and Angus discovered the planet's rich and unlimited supply of kerium. It was not long before Tex struck a deal with Skuzz to enslave the native Prairie People to work for them and betrayed McBride. Taking all the kerium for himself, he left McBride tied and gagged on a cliff. As Tex and Skuzz were ready to leave, the rumbling of the cruiser caused McBride to fall from the collapsing cliff, crippling him. However, the amount of kerium they gathered exceeded the capacity of the ship, which immediately crashed, apparently killing Tex and Skuzz. Stampede took advantage of this and revived Tex as his servant, gave him superpowers and renamed him Tex Hex. As soon as he was brought back, the undead Tex Hex did the same to Skuzz with his new powers.
As many settlers from different places of the universe arrived on New Texas for kerium, under Stampede's orders Tex Hex recruited the worst of the newcomers into an army of terror which became known as the Carrion Bunch. As a result, BraveStarr was called to New Texas as the planet's Galactic Marshal. Tex Hex became the archenemy of BraveStarr ever since they met. In the series, his crimes were often committed to get kerium, but they would always be foiled by BraveStarr and his allies.
Personality[]
Tex Hex is a greedy, arrogant, egotistical, controlling and sadistic individual who displays a cantankerous and attitude. He enjoys abusing his henchmen when they fail or simply annoy him. He is also quick to make or change allegiances if it suits his best interests. Despite this, he is also shown to have certain standards. A notable example is when Tex Hex abandoned his plans to take over Fort Kerium on Christmas while BraveStarr was away and prevented the attack because Ursula was coming to town, even wishing her a Merry Christmas from a distance and willingly choosing to face Stampede's wrath. Also in that episode, Shaman showed Tex Hex his future where he would be dead in a few years if he continued his villainy. This frightened Tex Hex, though it did not stop him from ever doing evil again.
Trivia[]
- Tex Hex was originally created as a one-shot villain for another Filmation cartoon, Ghostbusters, before Lou Scheimer decided to develop a separate TV series centered around the character.
