Biography[]
An important god with his brother Quetzalcoatl and the master of Yaolt, he took him after Yaotl offered himself to him in sacrifice. But on his way, he finds Mictēcacihuātl, the queen of the Underworld. The god reveals that he knows that she is in love with Yaotl because he has searched the memory of his new servant. He makes her understand that she should never approach him again, otherwise he will pulverize Yaotl from existence. Mictēcacihuātl protests, and runs to her lover, but Tezcatlipoca has erased his memory therefore his love for her. All that he left him as "memory" is his role of emissary of Tezcatlipoca. Satisfied, he transforms Yaotl into a giant jaguar and taunts the woman saying to go to her job.
Her heart broken, Mictēcacihuātl decides to take revenge by convincing her husband Mictlantecuhtli to destroy humans cities. This makes Tezcatlipoca and the other gods think that men no longer give them enough of their blood in sacrifice. This makes Tezcatlipoca and the other gods think that men no longer give enough of their blood in sacrifice. The gods indeed need blood to survive. After a debate, it is decided that Quetzalcoatl will close the 5 gates of the underworld. Tezcatlipoca does not understand Quetzalcoatl's love for humanity and wishes to annihilate him at the next equinox. He considers them too violent and warlike for his taste. Their blood is wasted in useless battles rather than being given to the gods. Quetzalcoatl reminds him that humanity has already been destroyed four times in the past. Quetzalcoatl offers him a bet: he will try to convince the most pathetic man he will have the chance to meet to close the doors of the underworld himself. Tezcatlipoca accepts but on the condition that the human in question is accompanied by Yaotl. His brother accepts in his turn. The god who will lose the bet will also lose his life. They then vanish into their respective homes.
Tezcatlipoca convokes Yaotl and charges him to escort Quetzalcoatl’s boy. He warns him to remain vigilant, suspecting a mysterious game is happening. Izel, the boy chosen to close the 5 doors, manages to close 3 of them, against Tezcatlipoca's expectations. The god is not happy and reproaches Yaotl for disobeying him. The giant jaguar tells him that Izel and his band are in the underworld at the moment. That makes the business of Tezcatlipoca because he hopes that they will all die there. Yaotl protests, but Tezcatlipoca reminds him of his oath of absolute fidelity to the god.
Izel closes the fourth gate and is about to close the last. However, he decides to summon Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca. The god loving humanity takes this as a proof that he won the bet, although Tezcatlipoca is not convinced. Izel tells the misanthropic god that he has lost and that if he closes the last door, he will die like a dog. This statement enrages Tezcatlipoca. Izel, however, gives up closing the fifth door because he neither loves nor hates humanity. He declares that it is up to the gods to decide and that he is tired of being their pawn. He chooses to be free and disappears with his companions.
Tezcatlipoca hasn’t changed of idea and declares himself the winner since the last gate isn’t closed. He drains the blood of his brother, weakening him greatly, and gladly says how joyful it will be to watch him die. Yaotl appears, and his master, furious toward him because he has disobeyed again, transforms him into a normal jaguar. He then scornfully says to Mictēcacihuātl she can watch his bones and she should be happy he didn’t kill him. Gloating to Quetzalcoatl that humanity will be slaughtered, he disappears.
He reappears in Tenochtitlan, wiping out the inhabitants of the city, and speaks to the tlatoani to conspire about Izel.
Personality[]
Tezcatlipoca is extremely misanthropic. This is because he despises the fact humans prefers to give blood to their internal wars rather than to himself and the other gods. For this reason, he wants nothing less than their complete annihilation. He doesn't like his brother's love for humanity either.
Although he is able to be polite when this suits him, Tezcatlipoca is also very arrogant and petty. He is hurt by a very little remark of Izel and considers himself superior to both humans, Quetzalcoatl, and Mictēcacihuātl, telling the latter to know her place. About Yaotl, while not obvious at first, Tezcatlipoca was abusive toward him, erasing his memory even if he knew if he was in love with Mictēcacihuātl and saying he is nothing when Yaotl disobeys him too much times.
Unlike the mythological Tezcatlipoca, who has a soft spot for slaves, this one hates all of humanity equally.
