Thérèse Raquin is the titular villainous main protagonist of the 1868 novel of the same name by Émile Zola. She is a sexually-repressed young woman that murders her husband in order to be married to his friend.

She was portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen in the 2013 erotic thriller film adaptation In Secret, who also portrayed Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Candy Montgomery in the 2023 miniseries Love & Death.

Biography[]

In France, Thérèse Raquin was sent to live with her aunt Madame Raquin and her hypochondriac son, Camille, following the death of her mother. Both Thérèse and Camille grew up together as children, and as adults, Madame Raquin forced Thérèse to marry Camille, despite her not loving him.

As the family moves to Paris in order for Camille to find job and career, he eventually gets a job and works with his friend named Laurent, while Madame Raquin and Thérèse get a job working at a shop. Laurent and Thérèse fall in love and meet in her room, unbeknownst to anyone. Wanting to marry and be together permanently, they both decide to kill Camille and then marry without getting caught and sentenced for murder, and while on a rowboat in the park, Laurent attacks Camille and drowns him, telling everyone that he died accidentally and that they tried to save him from drowning, but failed.

Thérèse and Laurent eventually marry, but begin to feel guilty for killing Camille. Soon after marrying, they start to have nightmares and hallucinations of the ghost of Camille, which prevent them from living happily as the two grow distant and Laurent quits painting. As this is going on, Madame Raquin eventually has a stroke, leaving her mute and paralyzed everywhere except for her eyes. One day, Thérèse and Laurent mention that killed Camille in front of Madame Raquin, which prompts her to try to inform her friends at a dominoes game that Thérèse and Laurent killed Camille by tracing the sentence on the table, which she fails. Unable to live with the memory of the murder, Thérèse and Laurent poison themselves in front of Madame Raquin, avenging Camille's death and murder.
