| “ | I'd been crying in these unchanging days. And you gently invited me to the end. Like it's sinking, like it's melting. The fog that had taken hold is cleared away. In these days in which I had sealed myself away, wanting to forget. I take your hand that you held out to me. A cool breeze is currently blowing through, as if swimming through the sky. Don't release our held hands. We now set off running into the night, together. |

| ~ Final lyrics of the song, where the protagonist describes him launching himself from the building with his beloved. |
Thanatos is the main antagonist of the Monogatary.com short story An Invitation from Thanatos, as well as the music video for Yoasobi's song Yoru ni Kakeru (Racing into the Night in English), which was based on said short story.
It is the spirit of death, who disguised itself as a girl suffering from depression and stuck in a state of wanting to commit suicide to in order to manipulate the protagonist into taking his own life.
Appearance[]
Thanatos' true form is never really shown as for the entirety of both the story and music video, it always used a disguise to trick the protagonist. Though, it's believed to share the same appearance as the Grim Reaper; a skeletal figure shrouded in a black cloak, while holding a scythe.
While disguising itself, Thanatos appears as a young woman with long hair and a knee-length dress with long sleeves, though both the actual color of the hair and dress is unknown as both always appeared pink in line with the color scheme of the video.
Biography[]
In the history of music, the story is told from the point of view of a man, who fell in love with a girl who suffers from depression and is always wanting to take his own life. She also falls in love with him and explains to him that some people are born guided by Eros, the God of Love, while others are guided by the God of Death, Thanatos. Those guided by Thanatos see Thanatos but do not see Eros, while those who see Eros do not see Thanatos. She mentions to the protagonist that it is common for people guided by love to want the same for their partner, and she being guided by death, wanted him to take his own life with her.
The protagonist is reluctant to the girl's request, sometimes showing jealousy because of Thanatos, since only she could see Thanatos and she exchanged him for the God of Death, someone he doesn't see or believe exists. After a while, the protagonist decides to unite with his beloved and take his life with her, and in doing so to her, the girl smiles for the first time. The two then throw themselves from a building, however, only the boy ends up losing his life and dying, but the girl remains alive and gives him one last kiss. For the girl was actually Thanatos, and she had manipulated him into taking the man's life.
The interpretation is that the song refers to depression, with Thanatos and the girl being a metaphor to represent what death is like for a person living in depression, in love with death itself and not wanting to assume it.

Trivia[]
- Thanatos' name is based on the Greek god of death of the same name.
- It is unknown if Thanatos (or the girl) was a real person or a hallucination of the protagonist.
- The reason for believing that it is Thanatos disguised as the girl is because only the protagonist dies, while she remains alive, as it is not possible to kill death.
- When both Thanatos and the protagonist are preparing to jump off the rooftop, multiple butterflies can be seen fluttering around them. This is also a nod to the original Greek deity as butterflies are considered the signature animal and symbol of Thanatos.
