Thanos is the overarching antagonist of the 2021 video game Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.
He is an Eternal from Titan, who later served as Gamora and Drax's archenemy, with him being the murderer of Drax's daughter Kamaria, his wife Hovat and his people in Katath, an act that haunted Drax to this day. During the bloody cosmic conflict known as the Galactic War, which was led by him, he was supposedly "killed" by Drax in retaliation for murdering his family, as well as with Gamora betraying her foster father, thereby ending the Galactic War for good.
Despite his supposed "death", however, Thanos' nigh-omnicidal actions continually haunts the people around the universe, with Drax still reeling for the loss of his family and with the Universal Church of Truth and its leader Raker attempting to brainwash anyone within the universe who suffered losses from Thanos with the "Promise" to turn them into Converted, under the guise of removing someone's grief and suffering.
Appearance[]
Thanos is an extremely tall and bulky male Eternal, who has a muscular build, black eyes and a huge chin. He wears a set of golden armor.
Personality[]
The galactic society frequently saw Thanos as the epitome of absolute evil and the ultimate representation of megalomaniacal brutality and devastation, a complete opposite to how he is often portrayed like his mainstream counterpart. While the most of this description is true, Thanos is a somewhat more complex character than most people realise because he appears to have some sort of fondness for his adoptive daughter Gamora but not for her sister Nebula.
By burning toys that he had previously given to Gamora and Nebula to teach them a lesson in attachment, Thanos showed that he was still a cruel and merciless father and mentor, indicating that he had a profoundly detached perspective for most things aside from his own quest for power and destruction.
On the outside Thanos appeared to be a misunderstood figure of messianic nature who wanted to balance the universe by eradicating half of all life. In reality, Thanos had no interest in achieving any kind of harmony, thanks to his obsession with Lady Death, which drove him to commit his omnicidal goal.
This obsession caused Thanos to develop extremely sadistic traits and omnicidal tendencies, and he even ignited the Galactic War in an effort to exterminate all life in the galaxy, opposite to his own purported "goal" of eradicating half of all life. One example of his sadism is when he spared the lives of a Katathian squad after defeating them in order to break their resolve, as means of breaking Drax's mind. After Drax the Destroyer admitted that they were equally determined to see each other dead in their previous combat, Thanos for some reason acquired a deep-seated hatred for him.
Biography[]
Thanos is an Eternal who was born from Titan, one of Saturn's moons. He served as the foster father of both Gamora and Nebula in the past. He started the Galactic War by allying with the Chitauri race, where he became bent in destroying half of all life from each planets he conquered around the universe, in order to win Lady Death's affection, leading to countless lives that were lost, including the destruction of the planet Xandar.
However, complications soon arose when Gamora soon defected to the Resistance led by Richard Rider after finding out her foster father's adoration to Lady Death and her subsequent, planned murder, dealing a significant blow to Thanos as it gave the Nova Corps the helping hand to defeat his invading army. Drax then located Thanos within the Black Quadrant, leading to a final battle between him and his archenemy, with the Mad Titan getting supposedly "killed" by him, thus becoming one of the contributors of the war's decisive end. However, Drax was more doubtful of Thanos' "death", fearing that he is still out in the galaxy.
In Chapter 11: Mind Over Matter, a Promise-addled Drax was soon brought in to Lamentis by the other Guardians and Mantis to Adam Warlock in order to enter his mind and destroy the Matriarch's influence holding him. The Guardians soon encountered an illusion of Thanos, to which the Guardians (sans Drax) defeated it easily. However, the illusory Thanos soon creates duplicates of himself, forcing the Guardians to fight all of them again, until they force themselves to be "defeated" by the Mad Titan to go further within Drax's Promise.
