~ Cyan before needling Tate. |
Cyan, Dury, and Ramona, better known as the Abbots, are supporting antagonists in the AMC series Into the Badlands.
They are a group of three senior Abbots at the Abbot Monastery, tracking down and kidnapping untrained Dark Ones so they can be brought back to the Monastery and trained, or to have their Gift removed by putting them into a coma with acupuncture needles. Unlike the other Abbots at the Monastery, these three are notably sadistic and violent in serving the Master.
Cyan was portrayed by Cung Le, Dury was portrayed by Aaron Heffernan, and Ramona was portrayed by Nikki Wong.
Personality[]
The three Abbots were notably silent compared to other Abbots such as Ava, carrying out their work with minimal communication. That being said, they were generally polite towards those they worked with, such as Penrith. Their willingness to be brutal in combat and kill anyone who gets in their way sets them apart from regular Abbots at the Monastery, prompting the Master to commonly send them out whenever a Dark One needed to be abducted and brought to the Monastery for training. Their ruthlessness prompting the Master to task them with needling runaway novices. On the occasions that they did speak, they would often be sadistic towards those they hunted, as seen when Cyan taunted Bajie over having lost his Gift. They also did not fear death, as after Cyan had his Gift turned off, he knew that he was about to be killed by Sunny, and proceeded to use the Hand of Five Poisons on him and then telling Sunny to finish him.
Biography[]
Capturing Dark Ones[]
In the early days of their time as the Monastery, Cyan worked with Bajie to track down Dark Ones and train them as novices. The two once took Bajie's novice Minerva to a camp full of nomad scavengers, who had a child with the Gift held captive. Minerva was enraged seeing so many people being enslaved by the nomads, and cut herself to activate her Gift. She then proceeded to murder all of the nomads present, as well as the people they were holding captive. Cyan and Bajie took her back to the Monastery where the Master ordered her to be needled, removing her Gift and putting her to sleep. Bajie saved her by transferring his Gift to her, therefore waking her but rendering them both without a Gift. The two then departed, and the Master decided not to send her Abbots after them due to them no longer having the Gift. Years later, Cyan, Dury, and Ramona operated out of one of the lost temples of Azra, where they met with religious Totemists in order to locate Dark Ones. One day, a Totemist named Penrith alerted them to the existence of a boy named M.K. with the Gift in the Armadillo Territory, the area of the Badlands ruled by Baron Quinn. They tracked him to an marketplace where they used their pressure point techniques to deactivate his Gift, but were confronted by Sunny, who made it clear if they wanted to take M.K. they would have to fight him. Dury and Ramona began fighting Sunny, but were eventually overpowered by his incredible fighting ability, prompting Cyan to enter the fight as well. Despite being outnumbered, it appears that Sunny would eventually defeat them, prompting them to activate their Gifts and decimate him in combat, nearly killing him. They then locked M.K. in a trunk and took him back to the Monastery to train his Gift. Six months after being brought to the Monastery, M.K. shows doubts about being there, and asks several times to be allowed to leave, which the Master denies until he can control his Gift. Cyan is seen on a few occasions leading novices around the Monastery, such as when he leads M.K. back to the sleeping chambers after an argument between him and the Master.
Hunting M.K. and Ava[]
When a novice named Tate attempts to run away from the Monastery, he is hunted down and capture by the three Abbots and taken to a secret chamber in the Monastery. Tate begs for forgiveness, saying he won't try to run away again. Cyan says he knows this, and that he is going to take away Tate's pain. They then inject acupuncture needles into Tate's body, draining the Gift from his body and putting him into a coma. This procedure is highly dangerous, and while it usually only leads to the Dark One entering a coma, in this case the shock actually kills Tate. After M.K. witnesses Tate being needled, he decides that he needs to run away from the Monastery. Ava, the Abbot training him catches him watching Tate get needled and tries to rationalize to M.K. why they had to do it, but he makes it clear that the Master is lying to them and that those who try to run shouldn't be put to sleep. M.K. runs from the Monastery the next day, and is followed by Ava, who also wishes to abandon the Monastery and make sure that M.K. is safe. Cyan, Dury, and Ramona are sent to find the two of them, and use a device that tracks the Gift. They are brought to an abandoned Christmas decoration store where M.K. and Ava are hiding, but are confronted by Sunny, who has also been searching for M.K. this whole time. They engage Sunny in combat but he is still no match for their Gift, and he tells M.K. to use his in order for them to stand a chance. M.K. explains that he cannot use it anymore due to the Master locking it, but Ava's Gift still works, and she activates it to fight the three Abbots. Ava kills Ramona, but is fatally wounded in the process. Dury and Cyan prepare to kill Sunny, only for Bajie, who is now Sunny's traveling companion, to suddenly burst through the wall of the store in the Abbots truck, killing Dury. Cyan then grabs Bajie and taunts him over having lost his Gift, but Bajie then uses his pressure point technique on Cyan to turn off his Gift, leaving him vulnerable. Sunny stands and stabs Cyan, who then uses the Hand of Five Poisons on him so that he dies as well, followed by Sunny cutting Cyan's head in half, killing him instantly.
Powers & Abilities[]
- The Gift: As three of the Monastery's most skilled Abbots, their Gift's are incredibly well trained. They can activate it at will and seemingly use it for as long as they want. Cyan's Gift was particularly powerful to the point that he was able to temporarily resist Bajie's pressure point technique to turn off the Gift, whereas other Dark Ones were instantly incapacitated by said technique.
- Hand of Five Poisons: Cyan was capable of using a technique known as the Hand of Five Poisons, which involved striking someone in the chest five times using his Gift, putting them into a coma that served as a nightmare which would eventually kill the person he used it on. It is unknown if Dury and Ramona were also capable of performing this technique.
- Martial Arts: Outside of their Gift, the three of them are highly skilled combatants, being able to fight perfectly in sink with each other and even match Sunny, the most skilled warrior in all of the Badlands. Cyan was shown to be slightly more skilled than Dury and Ramona, as he was able to fight Sunny to a standstill, whereas Sunny overpowered the two of them. When combining their combat skills with their Gift, they were essentially unstoppable to anyone who did not also possess the Gift.
Trivia[]
- Cyan is the only Dark One ever shown capable of resisting the pressure point technique which turns off the Gift, although it is likely the Master is also able to resist it despite no one ever attempting to use it on her.
