~ The Absolute to the player upon turning them into a mind flayer. |
“ | And you - you had your role to play, too. Who do you think told the Chosen about the Astral Prism? Who do you think planted the knowledge of Orpheus' power, and the fear of what it could do? When the Chosen sent my thralls to retrieve the Prism - who do you think let the Emperor slip its leash, knowing it would be the one to bring you to me? I only needed one Netherstone loosened from the Chosen's grasp to guarantee my freedom. You brought all three back to me. In doing so, you have liberated me. This was your role - and it is complete. Now you will witness the Grand Design. | „ |
~ The Absolute revealing its manipulations to the adventurers. |
The Absolute, later known as the Netherbrain, is one of the three main antagonists (alongside Enver Gortash and Raphael) and final boss of the 2023 fantasy video game Baldur's Gate III.
It is an elder brain of the mind flayers (or Illithids) that was enslaved by the three Chosen of the evil gods Bane, Bhaal and Myrkul using the Crown of Karsus, and made it the object of worship of the Cult of the Absolute, in order to use its psychic powers to conquer all of Faerun.
It was voiced by Cissy Jones.
History[]
At some point, owing to a lack of food, the elder brain entered a dormant state to preserve its life, until the dragonborndragon born called Dark Urge, Bhaal's Chosen, and Bane's Chosen, Enver Gortash found it and put the Crown of Karsus on it.
In the following years, many tribes of humanoids began to swear allegiance to the Absolute, and other creatures became united and rallied to the cause. The infamous charlatan and story-teller Volothamp Geddarm heard about this and sought out any who made contact with the zealots of the Absolute. He claimed to have interrogated a goblin captive, who told him that they had forsaken Maglubiyet "in favor of someone called 'The Absolute'." Volo noticed that, since their loyalty was now with the Absolute, they had become "informed by a kind of strategy anathema to their kind." Volo intended to get to the bottom of the matter.
The Absolute had an interest in finding a "weapon", specifically, a githyanki artifact that Shadowheart (a follower of Shar) obtained through a suicidal mission in the Year of Three Ships Sailing, 1492 DR. The Absolute appeared to be guiding a set of leaders of the Cult of the Absolute: Minthara Baenre, Dror Ragzlin, and High Priestess Gut.
It is later revealed that when the Dark Urge was assassinated by Orin the Red (or potentially injured should he be chosen as the main character), the Chosen's control over the Absolute weakened, allowing the elder brain to elaborate a plan to get revenge on the Chosen and raise its own army to start a war and seize control of the world, and perhaps even the multiverse, while dominating every mind to worship it, which will cause the utter extinction of the gods.
Appearance[]
The Absolute looked like the typical Elder Brain, only more gigantic.
The true non-divine nature of the Elder Brain was kept a secret to both outsiders and members of the cult. It was generally assumed to be a deity, with many professing themselves acolytes and clerics of it. The Absolute was represented by the combined holy symbols of of the Dead Three: Bane's hand, Bhaal's skull and Myrkul's triangle.
