Biography[]
The short film follows Owen, a man struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and his girlfriend Anna, who encourages him to resist his compulsions as part of exposure therapy. At the start, Owen obsessively counts while organizing store shelves, and Anna reassures him that he doesn’t have to fix everything. She reminds him that he overcame his reliance on the “string of doom,” a comfort object he carried for years, and insists that if he can handle this, he’ll be fine meeting her parents.
Later, while shopping, Owen hesitates to grab ice cream due to his fear of frostbite, but he pushes through. However, when he notices a Rocky Road carton misplaced in the vanilla section, his anxiety spikes. Anna urges him to resist the compulsion to fix it, but his intrusive thoughts intensify. As he struggles, a mysterious, aggressive man appears, taunting Owen and reinforcing his fears. Owen initially tries to ignore him, but when he sees a news report about a gas leak outside his and Anna’s home, panic sets in.
He frantically tries to warn Anna, but she dismisses his fears as another irrational compulsion. Suddenly, his phone bombards him with messages criticizing his unreliability, overwhelming him further. Then, just as Anna lights a candle, an explosion engulfs the apartment. The strange man, revealed as a manifestation of Owen’s OCD, blames him for Anna’s death, insisting that his compulsions prevent real disasters. Broken and desperate, Owen decides to “fix” everything, believing the only way to undo the catastrophe is by correcting the misplaced ice cream. However, as he rushes to do so, his body fails him.
After Owen believes he has finally fixed everything by following his compulsion, the mysterious man dismisses his efforts, telling him that while he may have put the ice cream back, the rest of the mess remains unchanged. As the man walks away, Owen is left in confusion, unsure of what to do next. Suddenly, the store is thrown into chaos when armed robbers burst in, demanding money and forcing everyone to the ground.
One of the robbers recognizes Owen and accuses him of being a racist based on a viral image. Despite Owen's desperate protests that it's not him, the robbers decide to execute him. As gunfire erupts, everything distorts into a surreal nightmare, with time breaking down and reality shifting. In the midst of the chaos, Anna’s voice calls out to Owen, urging him to resist his urges for her. At that moment, the hallucination shatters.
Owen snaps back to reality, standing in front of the freezer, still holding the ice cream. He laughs, realizing how absurd his compulsions are, and apologizes before finally walking away without giving in. Anna, unaware of his internal struggle, reassures him that everything will be fine, and they proceed to checkout. The cashier rings up the total as $11.11, prompting Owen to make a wish before handing over the money. As he exits the store, the world feels normal again. The mysterious man watches as Owen leaves, grins, before proceeding to light a cigarette with glee.
