Villain Overview

We can't trust anyone in here... I think we know that by now.
~ The Translator referring to The Alien's experiment.

The Aliens are the overarching antagonists of the 2015 thriller film Circle.

Biography[]

Nothing is known for certain about the aliens, where they are from, what they look like, or how many of them came to Earth. The only thing known of them is that they have the ability to use tractor beams to kidnap 50 humans at random per ship and keep them asleep for as long as they want them to be with alien drugs/technology.

The Aliens would also seemingly perform surgery on all of their victim's hands. When "The Panicking Man" was shot dead after accidentally stepping off of his circle, his palm started to glow in the shape of a circle, which was then lifted into the air by an unseen force and his body dragged away to an unknown location.

After Eric survives his own circle, the aliens knock him unconscious and then release him on Earth. When he wakes up, he finds a group of 14 other survivors (nearly half of which are either children or pregnant women) looking at several of the alien ships floating in the sky, making Eric think about what he had just done to the pregnant woman and Katie.

Description[]

The aliens themselves are never seen throughout the movie, only their ships at the very end. One of the kidnapped people aboard the ship, Howard, says that he saw them personally before they all woke up in the room they're all in, saying they he woke up in a red room with several unconscious people piled on top of each other just like Eric mentioned and that they looked "big and black, dark green maybe. And wet". He also said they spoke in a language that sounded similar to Chinese.

However, given that his credited name is also "Old Man Liar" and he could've been lying to protect himself along with the other elderly people, it's most likely none of what he said was true.

The alien's ship consists of a large pitch black sphere that the kidnapped humans perform their experiments inside of, which is held up a ring of alien metal, most likely where the aliens reside and keep the unconscious/dead humans.

Rules of the Experiments[]

  1. The test subjects are not allowed to step outside of their circles. If they do, they are shot dead.
  2. The test subjects are not allowed to touch the other subjects. If they do, they are shot dead.
  3. You cannot vote for yourself, doing so does nothing.
  4. If a vote is not made within two minutes, a test subject at random is shot dead.
  5. If a vote ends in a tie, there is an extra 2 minutes to vote again.
  6. If a vote is not made, everyone highlighted in the tie is shot dead.
  7. The test subjects cannot vote for a dead body. If they do, the person with the second most amount of votes is shot dead.
  8. The test will not stop until one man, woman, or child is left.

Trivia[]

  • It's possible that The Aliens either don't know what pregnant human women look like or consider the woman and their baby to be the same person since they can both fit inside the same circle, since at least two pregnant women are shown to have survived at the end.
  • If the aliens did their experiments on every human on Earth in the year 2015 (7.385 Billion people), they would need 147,700,000 ships. This would cause the deaths of at least 7,237,300,000 people, leaving only 147,700,000 humans alive.
  • The laser that kills the unwilling participants seems to be mercifully painless, or at least so powerful it kills whoever it hits before they can even feel the pain, as none of those hit by it ever making any pained noises as they fall to the ground, or need a second shot from the turret to finish them off.
    • The power of the laser can also seemingly be adjusted, evidenced when one man who ties with The Pregnant Woman and Katie is launched back several feet by the laser instead of limply falling to the ground like every other victim when he tried pushing both of them out of their circles.
    • This could also be evidence that the laser turret is not automated, but personally controlled by one of the aliens who strictly follows and endorses the rules of the experiment.
  • Not counting how long it would take to abduct every single human on the planet, the experiments themselves are rather short, only being an hour and 40 minutes long if every human on Earth was captured at the same time.
    • However, given the ending showing alien ships still around after Eric survives his circle, it's clear that is not the case. If every experiment took place one after another, it would take 28,082 years, 5 months, 8 days, 3 hours, and 2 minutes, assuming there wouldn't be any ties. If there was a tie every time, the time would double to 56,164 years, 10 months, 16 days, 6 hours, and 4 minutes.
