The Arcane Brotherhood are major of the Forgotten Realms. They are major antagonists of R.A Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt, serving as the overarching antagonists of The Crystal Shard and Spine of the World, as well as secondary antagonists of Streams of Silver and The Pirate King. They were a mercantile guild of wizard who sought political and economic control over the North. Led by Arklem Greeth, they operated mainly in the city of Luskan from the Host Tower of the Arcane. After Greeth's death and the tower's destruction, they were recreated by Cashaan.
History[]
The order was founded by Arklem Greeth, a powerful mage who sought immortality and control over the North. He came to Luskan, and found like-minded who helped create a mercantile company to further his ambition. The Brotherhood dominated trade and eventually gained power over all of Luskan, with its real leaders being figureheads. With this new power, they built the Host Tower of the Arcane.
From there, they tried to spread their power around the north but were mostly unsuccessful. At one point, the island of Rauthym but were for to give it back by the Lord's Alliance. They also launched a war against the land of Lantan, which they lost.
At this point, Greeth's lieutenants rebelled against him, chasing him from Luskan. With no leader, the Brotherhood was launched into civil war. However, Greeth returned a few months later as a lich, more powerful than ever. He killed the traitors and reinstated himself as archmage.
It was long after this that the famous captain Deudermont and Lord Brambleberry of Waterdeep led a rebelion against the Brotherhood. After a long war, Greeth blew up The Host Tower of the Arcane and fled Luskan, destroying the Arcane's Brotherhood's grasp on the city.
Over a century later, the Brotherhood returned to Luskan led by Cashaan, earning the people's trust by saving the city from unded and a dragon. They then began recruiting more wizards and resumed their quest to dominate the North.
