Elias Northcrest, better known as The Baron, is the main antagonist in the 2014 game Thief. He is the tyrannical Baron of the city who will stop at nothing to achieve his vision, no matter the cost. He is also responsible for setting the events of the game in motion.
He was voiced by Michael Copeman.
Biography[]
The Baron is first encountered when Garrett and Erin are attempting to sneak into his manor. He is performing a ritual along with members of the awakened in an attempt to harness the power of the primal stone and infuse with primal energy, in order to launch the city into an age of progress and industry. Garrett decides to leave, stating the job is to dangerous but Erin refuses, determined to steal the primal stone. Garrett tries to stop Erin but ultimately fails as Erin falls though the glass, interrupting the ritual and causing the gloom, which sets off the events of the game.
Moira Asylum[]
Garrett searches Moira Asylum for Clues and discovers Erin is still alive, and that the Baron had been experimenting on her in an attempt to get the primal out of her. His half-brother Aldous attempted to take control of the city from him by revealing what really happened at Northcrest manor. Angered, the Baron had his half-brother sent to Moira Asylum while he continued to try to remove the primal from Erin, until the riots when Aldous was able to kidnap Erin and escape. The Baron discontinued his work and sent the Thief-Taker General to recapture Aldous and Erin
Northcrest Manor Revisited[]
The Baron hides away in his manor at the height of the revolution. Garrett returns to Northcrest manor to confront the Baron about Erin and the primal, the Baron then explains how they had both used by Aldous, and how he has heard a lot about Garrett, and that he remembers Garrett from the ritual. He then Proceeds to corner Garrett into the elevator. It is unknown what happens to the Baron.
Personality[]
The Baron is a cold-blooded and ruthless man who is obsessed with bringing an age of progress and industry to the city, and is willing to do whatever it takes to see this happen, regardless of who he has to hurt or whatever the consequence. He despised his father, viewing him as a "tallowed opium fiend" who preferred drinking and whoring over progress and industry, and wasn't the least bit upset when he when he died. In the end, he never really cared about the city or its people, he only cared about power.
