The Barrister Ghosts are major characters in the 2021 Disney Channel comedy and fantasy animated series The Ghost and Molly McGee. They are part of The Ghost Council.
They are the rulers of the Ghost World and the bosses of Scratch and many of the other ghosts that have appeared in the series. They are the ones who evaluate the misery caused by the ghosts on human towns, and send them to the Flow of Failed Phantoms if they fail to do so. They could be considered minions of The Chairman.
Members[]
There are four ghosts in total, not counting The Chairman and the green ghost who announces:
- Lucretia: (Voiced by Grey DeLisle Griffin) - A purple ghost. She is toothless and, like Bartholomew, she is quite short, though her hair just about doubles her height. She sits on the far left of the barristers.
- Sir Alister: (Voiced by John DiMaggio) - A green ghost. Like Lucretia, he speaks in a very haughty voice and seems to be the most willing to taunt others. He also sits in one-of-two of the middle barristers.
- Bartholomew: (Voiced by Greg Baldwin) - A blue ghost. He seems to be the most grumpy of the council and also happens to be the shortest. He sits on the far right of the barristers.
- Grimbella: (Voiced by Kari Wahlgren) - A pink ghost. She speaks in a very haughty, British-accented tone of voice, wears pink lipstick. She sits in one-of-two of the middle barristers.
Personality[]
All of the ghosts in the council are seen to be very arrogant and elitist, probably having a superiority complex because of their positions. They seem to dislike Scratch because of his "rudeness" and because he is "not popular". They also show little to no mercy to ghosts who fail them or disobey their rules, as shown in their first appearance, where they send a female ghost to the Flow of Failed Phantoms despite having a good reason for being unable to spread misery.
The council is a bureaucratic faction, as pointed by Scratch, and they are actually very serious in their jobs, threatening Scratch to send him to the Flow of Failed Phantoms just because he is one scare short in his monthly basis. They are also willing to harm children, as they send Jinx to eliminate the joy in Brighton, (Molly), and later send her to the Flow of Failed Phantoms with Scratch, even though she wasn't even dead (A action that ultimately leads to their downfall).
The Barrister Ghosts are seen to have a crude and bizarre sense of humor, as they find typos in paperwork very amusing and hilarious, such as the one Scratch made in his scare report, this may be related to the fact that they are bureaucrats whom mostly work looking at documents.
Despite their cruel, serious and arrogant attitudes, the Barrister Ghosts are quite cowardly in their own right, as they were absolutely horrified when Molly killed the Chairman with her joy (simply by touching him), and they refused to stop her from leaving with Scratch.
Appearance[]
The four ghosts resemble elderly people, two being female and the other two being male. Their colors are purple, green, pink, and blue, and as most of the ghosts, they are made of ectoplasm.
Biography[]
Past[]
Not much is known about the Barristers' past except that they were once human, and, like the Chairman, they have been punishing ghosts for failing to cause misery in the Human World by sending them to the Flow of Failed Phantoms for an unknown amount of time.
It is still unknown how they got their positions as members of the council.
When they are not doing their job, they spend their time on an VIP ghost club, where Scratch and other unpopular ghosts are forbidden from entering.
Season 1[]
The Curse[]
The Barrister Ghosts first appear in the series premiere, along with the Chairman, while punishing one of the ghosts, a pink ghost, for failing to keep her assigned town miserable. Despite her reason for her failure, (the town opened a dog rescue and she couldn't compete with it,) they coldly chastise her, before the Chairman sends her to the Flow of Failed Phantoms.
They summoned Scratch, and deem his performance in his town of Brighton as 'adequate'. As they prepare to go to a club, as their work is now done for the day, Scratch tries to go with them, but they laugh at him and tell him he's dismissed.
Later on, Scratch goes to them for help after he accidentally cursed himself to Molly. He ends up running into Lucretia and Sir Alister, who despite being annoyed by his presence, tell him that the only way out of the curse is to scare the family out of the house forever.
The (Un)natural[]
They appear threatening Scratch because he is one scare short in his monthly quota, telling him directly to scare someone right in that moment.
The Turnip Twist[]
They summon and then warn Scratch that the joy of Brighton is slowly rising, probably because of Molly's actions, they later threat Scratch to send him to the Flow of Failed Phantoms if he fails to cause misery in the oncoming Turnip Festival.
At the end of the episode, the Council is not pleased by seeing Brighton's misery levels decreasing again.
All Systems No[]
They appear to be pleased with Scratch because he managed to keep Brighton at low misery levels, even offering him to join the Elite Ghost Society, however because of the curse that Scratch put himself in, he ends up refusing the offer, much to his own sadness.
Scratch the Surface[]
They don't appear physically, but they are briefly seen along with The Chairman sending Scratch to the Flow of Failed Phantoms in his imagination sequence using the puzzle pieces.
Game Night[]
They are in the middle of punishing a green ghosts by sending him to the Flow of Failed Phantoms, until they get interrupted by Scratch before sending him back to Earth.
The Don't-Gooder[]
They appear very briefly during the song sequence, looking confused as nougat bars rain from the sky, after Scratch opened a portal to discard them. Bartholomew, much to his annoyance, gets hit on the head with a water cup.
The Very Hungry Ghost[]
The Council appears first making fun of Scratch because his spelling error, until they notice Scratch's food. Once they learn of the feast, they go to Earth to try some of it, believing that Scratch actually scared the humans so badly that they are giving up "offerings".
When Molly calls Scratch his "buddy", they question him briefly, even angering The Chairman, and though they seem suspicious they don't ask any further questions. After finishing the food, they praise it and go back to the Ghost World, even telling Scratch that he has "risen in [their] esteem".
The Jig is Up[]
The Council appears again summoning Scratch to see them. They reveal that joy in Brighton was on the rise, and ask if he knew anything about it. Scratch denies this, so they deduce there is a "Joy Agent" and send joy hunter Jinx to find it. When Jinx discovered Scratch was friends with Molly McGee, she drags him off to the Council for punishment.
Molly Vs. The Ghost World[]
Following up from the last episode, Jinx brings Scratch before the Ghost Council and reveals his friendship with Molly. They then proceed to put Scratch on trial, having several ghosts from throughout the season as witnesses. Before they can send him to the Flow of Failed Phantoms, Molly, who had become a Wraith, interrupts and states that Scratch shouldn't be punished.
Scratch vouches for her, stating she was right. At first, the Council seems touched, but then decide to send them both to the Flow instead. However, this ultimately backfires because everything Molly touches turns to joy, and the Flow begins to collapse, freeing all the ghosts that were sent there. After Molly and Scratch are freed, she boops The Chairman on the nose, overloading him with her joy, and destroying him, leaving only his cloak, much to the horror of the council. Molly then tells the council that she was leaving with Scratch, asking if they had a problem with it. However, the council and Jinx, now terrified of Molly after what she did to their leader, simply back down without a fight.
Season 2[]
The New (Para)Normal[]
After The Chairman's demise and the destruction of the Flow of Failed Phantoms, the Ghost Council no longer had a leader, and needed to reinstate a new one. They tried to invite Scratch to lead the Council as the "new chairman" but he quickly dismissed it.
The Barrister Ghosts then went to Scratch to ask him what to do with themselves, as they no longer had any real purpose, Scratch gives them the advice to "enjoy their afterlife" and to pursue their own hobbies and interests. While Lucretia, Bartholomew and Grimbella took enjoyment in their office jobs enough to think improving their working environment is "fun", Sir Alister was moved enough to confess that when he was alive, he had a love for music and wanted to play the lute, but his father forbade him. Hearing that story, Scratch told him he should "stick it to his old man" and follow his dream of playing the lute and even go on tour in a lute shaped minivan.
It was later revealed that the Flow of Failed Phantoms contained a highly dangerous type of ghouls known as the "Frightmares", that were kept in there for the safety of both human and ghost world, and that they only take command from the Chairman. Scratch was forced to become the "new Chairman" just to keep in bay the Frightmares and to appease the Barrister Ghosts, who knew all this time about the Frightmares being released and whom just chose Scratch as the new Chairman because apparently, "the one who takes down the previous one, becomes the new Chairman", and since Scratch was technically the one who banished him (Molly doesn't count since she is a human), he was the only eligible candidate. Scratch also let the Barrister Ghosts to have "fun" and declared them to become his group of advisers.
A Doll to Die For[]
They appear at the beginning of the episode being, along with Scratch, tormented by Lord Doom, begging him to stop Lord Doom since he is The Chairman now, and stating that Lord Doom also got freed from the Flow of Failed Phantoms after The Chairman's death, Scratch then manages to trap Lord Doom into a doll (Although he intended to trap him into a bottle).
The (After)life of the Party[]
During the party, Sir Alister can be seen in the dance floor, while Scratch is trying to hide from Geoff's sight.
Frightmares on Main Street[]
The Barrister Ghosts, minus Sir Allister, are among the many ghosts that were invited to Molly's house of horrors by Scratch during Brighton's Halloween celebrations. They were later forced to retreat the party with all the other ghosts when the Chen family showed up and attacked the party.
The Unhaunting of Brighton Video[]
They make a brief apparition during the "Ghost Friends" song montage, being confronted and then entertained by the Ghost Friends team.
Dance Dad Revolution[]
After having Scratch complete some paperwork, the Barrister Ghosts instruct him to clean the Haughty Haunts Club after a Frightmare attack. Their reasoning was that, since Scratch was the one to free the Frightmares from the Flow of Failed Phantoms (or at least was one of the ones responsible), then it should be him that cleans up their messes, though they provide the tools to do so.
Later on, after the Haughty Haunts Club is cleaned, the Barrister Ghosts joined in on the dance Geoff and Jeff started, with notably Bartholomew and Grimbella dancing together.
Once all the chaos is over, the Haughty Haunts Club is a mess again, and Sir Alister remains behind to give Scratch the broom to sweep it up.
The Ghost IS Molly McGee[]
The Barrister Ghosts' work is interrupted by Scratch, which is apparently a common enough occurrence for this to be their breaking point. They agree to strike and it becomes quickly apparent that Scratch needs to get them back to work asap, given that one incorrectly stamped scroll caused Death Valley to explode.
Once Molly and Scratch swap roles, Molly is able to find success in getting most of the Barristers to forgive Scratch pretty easily, however Bartholomew refuses to give in. Eventually, after all her attempts fail, Molly asks Bartholomew what he wants to get him to go back to work. Bart tells her that he just wants to do his job with out Scratch getting grease everywhere, mucking up the Dark Dais and making it difficult for him to work. Molly makes a promise on Scratch's behalf that he'd stop eating at the dais, and this appeases Bartholomew, ending the Barrister Ghosts' strike.
This episode showcases the Barrister Ghosts' loyalty to each other, because even though the other three were satisfied, they stuck with Bartholomew and followed his lead until he was also ready to end the strike.
Alaka-Sham![]
It's shown that the Barrister Ghosts keep their unfinished work in a "Curse Cabinet", an enchanted cabinet that gets irate when it is overfilled with work orders. When this happens, it'll be restrained by a chain until either the work is done or it breaks free. The latter is what happens in the episode, resulting in the Curse Cabinet attacking Scratch and the Barrister Ghosts. Though we don't see the fight or aftermath for the Barristers, it's clear based on their reactions beforehand, and how beaten up Scratch is after the situation is handled, that these attacks are brutal. However, they are able to get it under control.
It is also revealed that the Barrister Ghosts have the ability to redirect the portals of other ghosts, as Alister does this to one of Scratch's portals when he attempts to leave.
Trivia[]
- Their name of "Barrister Ghosts" probably refers to their jobs as bureaucrats.
- Their official names are Lucretia, Sir Alister, Bartholomew, and Grimbella, according to the credits of "The Very Hungry Ghost", however none of them were addressed by name in the series up until the season 2 episode premiere "The New (Para)Normal", where it is also revealed that Scratch didn't know any of their names, hence why he always referred to them as "The Ghost Council".
- This, apparently, was a deliberate choice, as co-creator Bob Roth considered their names to be spoilers for season 2, until he was told by Bill Motz on the anniversary Twitter space that the names had been revealed by the credits.
- Out of all the Barrister Ghosts, Scratch has said that he likes Sir Alister the least.
- Despite being all about making humans and their hometown's miserable, they apparently didn't replace Scary Sven as Perfektborg's main ghost, as that particular town continued to be perfect and happy when Scary Sven got banished to the Flow of Failed Phantoms for eternity.
- They seem to have twisted standards when it comes to each ghost's monthly scare quota, as they ignore the fact Scratch scared the pizza man multiple times yet point out he's one scare short when they found out "Billy Palmer" and "William Palmer" are the same person.
- Although they were aware that everything Molly touches turns to joy, they completely overlooked this and sent her to the Flow of Failed Phantoms. This ultimately causes the flow to collapse, freeing all the ghosts inside, which leads to the Chairman's death, and effectively taking away the only things to keep their rule over the Ghost World.
- In the pilot for the show, Bartholomew was absent, and instead Greg Baldwin (his voice actor) voiced Lucretia.
