“ | And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. | „ |
~ The faint voice of an evangelist reading Revelations 13:1 from the Book of Revelation in the cutscene before the Beast fight. |
The Beast is the final boss of The Binding of Isaac: Repentance DLC for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, and as such the final boss of the game as a whole.
Appearance[]
The Beast is a huge demon with soot-black skin, three eyes as red as brimstone, a blood covered toothy maw, and three horns. The rest of her body isn't shown as her head is the only part of her visible in the fight and said head is as tall as the screen.
Biography[]
After defeating Dogma, Isaac is crushed by a giant static cross that rises from the remains of Dogma, which turns his tears into static. Following this, the room begins collapsing, revealing a hellish cavern while Isaac sprouts a pair of wings and flickers between resembling Blue Baby, The Forgotten, and The Lost. Isaac then flies up to face The Beast rising up from the lava.
At the start of the fight, The Beast sits inactive in the background. Flying around The Beast are four Ultra Harbingers, which attack Isaac one at a time in the order of Famine, Pestilence, War, and Death. Famine attacks first, barraging Isaac with a flurry of bloody attacks while the rest cheered for Famine's victory. However, Isaac triumphs over Famine as Pestilence is sent next. The bloated corpse was accompanied by a swarm of oversized flies during his turn against Isaac as he fired ipecac at Isaac, creating walls of toxic fog. Isaac triumphed against Pestilence too, leading for War to vent his hatred at the boy for making it this far. War then began to bombard the arena with bombs, turning it into a war zone and forcing Isaac to weave between explosions if he wants any hope of survival. Fortunately for Isaac, War was reckless and put himself into harms way more times than Famine and Pestilence, making it easier to kill him. Death, bemused by the failure of his fellow horsemen, picks up his scythe and confronts Isaac last. He summoned scythe after scythe at Isaac. When that didn't work, Death summoned a swarm of skulls that encroach the screen before destroying them, covering the area in darkness and tried to kill him in the dark. However Isaac persists, showing him that not even death can stop him from redemption.
Once they have all been defeated, The Beast lets out a roar, submerges into the lava, then reemerges on the right side of the screen, beginning her fight. She charges at Isaac, chasing him through a field of stalagmites and stalactites. She then begins to inhale, trying to swallow Isaac whole while also charging up an attack. Any stalagmite or stalactite still on screen will be destroyed during this attack. After inhaling 8 rings of fire, The Beast stops and fires a massive Brimstone beam that covers the bottom and middle portions of the screen. She then charges at the opposite side of the arena and begins to chase Isaac through the stalagmite and stalactite fields again. After wildling her hp down to 65%, the Beast gains two new attacks. At the end of the charge, The Beast performs one of the aforementioned two attacks:
- She opens her mouth and fires 3 radial waves of slower-moving fire, then firing 6 radial strings of fast-moving projectiles which travel through the gaps left between each fire.
- She roars and spawns 4 souls which chase Isaac and charge at him, trying to predict his movements, before exploding.
- Like with the first phase, any remaining stalagmites or stalactites on screen are destroyed at the start of this attack.
After preforming either attack, the beasts dives below the lava. At first, Isaac appears to have killed the creature, but many lines of orange light begin to emanate from the lava. The glow of these lines increases in intensity over time before launching out a large ball of molten lava that flies up and falls back into the magma. The Beast gradually increases the rate at which projectiles are launched before eventually reemerging from the lava on the opposite end of the screen and launching a small burst of large fiery projectiles arcing in all directions.
After Isaac depletes her HP further down to 33%, a burst of blood flies from the Beast as she roars in pain before being forced into the lava and reappears on the opposite side where she descended and begins to chase Isaac again through the stalagmite and stalactite fields indefinitely. Isaac keeps attacking her, with the beast's body beginning to erode and break with each tear absorbed, starts with her horns cracking and her body bursting its boils, the horns falling off entirely as one eye is gouged from its socket, and ending with her losing her other eye, her third horn, almost all of her teeth, and looking like her skin is melting. As Isaac fires one last tear, a large beam of light comes down and strikes the beast, killing her and ending Isaac's trauma as he ascends to Heaven.

Trivia[]
- The Beast is heavily based on the first Beast described in the Book of Revelation, being the beast of the Sea.
- The Beast's theme is called "Revelations 13-1", referencing the section in the Book of Revelation describing the first Beast.
- The Beast appears to be wearing a tattered version of Mom's dress, suggesting that she is the last (and most primordial) interpretation of Mom from Isaac's perspective.
- In Revelation, it is said that the Lord is the one who defeats The Beast, which may explain the beam of light that comes down to kill The Beast.
- If The Beast is affected with any Status effects as she dies, the beam of light changes color. This is likely because the beam of light is part of The Beast's frames and not a different entity entirely.
- According to a Twitter post by Edmund McMillen, The Beast's boss fight takes place in the Lake of Fire.
- For context, the Lake of Fire is a hellish, fiery lake of burning lava that is a symbolism of absolute destruction found in ancient Christian belief systems, and it is often confused with Hell but is actually a different concept. Hell itself will be cast into the Lake of Fire alongside all its demons and sinners during the end of days, according to the original prophecy of the Bible. This lead to some fan theories speculating that everything shown from the dogma fight up to the beast fight is real and the fight itself appears to be taking place in the biblical apocalypse described in the Book of Revelations.
