“ | Our founders tried to warn the people that the Gifted ones would lead to their destruction, but their warning went unheeded until it was too late. Then we learned that a new city was being built in the rubble of Azra, a haven for the Dark Ones. We could not let history repeat itself. | „ |
~ Magnus |
The Black Lotus are the overarching antagonists of the AMC series Into the Badlands.
They are an ancient cult that was founded after the fall of modern society due to the emergence of Dark Ones, individuals who possessed dark chi powers known as the Gift. With the world now in a state of complete disarray, the Black Lotus formed in order to hunt down and kill Dark Ones to stop their Gift from harming anyone. Led by Magnus, they invaded and destroyed Azra, the mythical city where Dark Ones resided. After its destruction, they spent decades searching for Sunny and Pilgrim, the last surviving children of Azra. Despite having a noble goal, the influence of Magnus and their extreme methods lead them to commit several atrocities in order to stop Dark Ones.
History[]
Origin[]
At some point during modern history, human technology began rapidly advancing. This led to the creation of a city called Azra, where the leaders began studying the meridians of energy inside the Earth. This was first discovered and harnessed near a museum, where a device was constructed known as the Meridian Chamber. Within this chamber, the leaders of Azra created an obelisk that could draw dark chi energy known as the Gift directly from the Earth. This could be transferred to a human being, transforming them into a Dark One. The founders of the Black Lotus warned the leaders of Azra that the Gift was dangerous and would collapse of society, but this warning was brushed off and the founders continued to harness the Gift to the point that it's energy branched out into the world and began to emerge in newborn children. Through unknown means, the existence of children being born with the Gift eventually led to modern society collapsing, and the city of Azra being destroyed. The Black Lotus would then form and set up prisons and military-like bases all across the remaining areas of civilization with the purpose of searching for any Dark Ones and killing them, hoping to one day eradicate the Gift entirely. After nearly five-hundred years of operation, a man named Magnus joined their ranks. It became clear that in the ruins of the old Azra, Dark Ones were trying to rebuild the city and were planning to take over society using their powerful Gift. Magnus began working at the Abbot Monastery, a place where a woman named the Master trained Dark Ones in secret. He acted as a non-Gifted scribe, gaining the trust of Ankara, a powerful master at the Monastery who wished to find Azra as well, but was unaware of Magnus' true intentions. After years of searching, they finally found the lost city. However, Magnus betrayed Ankara and poisoned her wine, then went with two other Black Lotus members to scout out the city. They were caught by Dante, the cities leader, and the two other members were killed. Magnus begged Sanzō, the son of Dante, to free him, telling him of his fathers mission to use the Gift to take over the world. Sanzō freed him, only for Magnus to escape and return with the Black Lotus army and destroy the city, with only Sanzō, his sister Kannin, and friend Taurin managing to survive.
Hunting the lost children of Azra[]
Whilst continuing to hunt down any Dark Ones they could find, the Black Lotus begins pursuing the three remaining children of Azra. They use a device that can track the Gift in order to find Sanzō, Kannin, and Taurin, who are hiding on one of the River King's boats. They attack the boat and kill everyone on board sans the captain, who they severely injure. Kannin uses her Gift to fight off as many of the Black Lotus members as she can, and proceeds to use it to lock Sanzō's Gift inside of him, preventing the Black Lotus from being able to track him in the future. Sanzō and Taurin then manage to escape, but Kannin the Black Lotus take Kannin hostage. Rather than kill her in the same way they normally would, Magnus, who is now the leader of the Black Lotus, builds a rig that can contain her even if her Gift activates. He proceeds to torture her in the rig for a lengthy period of time, to the point that she becomes subservient to him and begins sleeping with him. He then turns her into a weapon, who uses her Gift combined with the Black Lotus' specialized techniques in order to kill other Dark Ones. Due to Sanzō's Gift being inside of him and Taurin not having one, the Black Lotus are unable to find them. Years go by, Sanzō has renamed himself to Sunny and Taurin has renamed himself to Pilgrim, with Sunny having lost his memories as a child and Pilgrim wishing to rebuild a new Azra. While the Black Lotus is aware of Pilgrim's mission and his location, they are unable to face him directly due to him having several Dark Ones at his disposal and an army of followers. The Black Lotus eventually track down Ankara to a mountain range where she lives in secret. The members sent to kill her manage to gravely injure her, but are overpowered and killed in the process. Ankara is rescued by Sunny and taken to a storage house, alongside and ally of his named Bajie. Magnus and two other Black Lotus members storm the storage house and attack it with flashbangs, knocking out Sunny before killing both Ankara and Bajie. Having found one of the lost children of Azra, Magnus takes Sunny back to Razor Ridge, their main base of operations, for the sake of harnessing his Gift just like he did to Kannin.
War for the Badlands[]
Now having brought Sunny back to Razor Ridge, Magnus reunites him with his sister Kannin, who has promised that she will turn him into a weapon just like her. However, things go sideways for the cult when Bajie, who was revived from death by Ankara moments before she succumbed to her injuries, storms Razor Ridge in order to save Sunny. He ends up being captured in the process, but before he can be executed and Sunny turned into a weapon, Sunny manages to convince Kannin to turn against Magnus and not use her Gift to control him, causing a massive fight to break out between her and the Black Lotus members present. Kannin, Sunny, and Bajie all managed to escape, but Kannin cannot bring herself to kill Magnus due to having followed him for so long. Several weeks go by, and the threat of Pilgrim rises significantly, with him having uncovered the Meridian Chamber and is now giving the Gift to his entire army of followers. Sunny, Bajie, and another ally of theirs named Gaius Chau organize a meeting with Magnus and a large group of Black Lotus members to discuss putting their hatred aside and working together to take down Pilgrim due to the danger his army poses. While Magnus recognizes this as a reasonable compromise, he claims to not believe in compromises and attacks the trio. Magnus and Sunny fight and seem evenly matched, but Kannin arrives in order to help, and together the two of them overpower and kill Magnus. Kannin delivers the finishing blow, breaking down into tears after doing so, having followed him loyally for so long. She then reveals to the rest of the Black Lotus that their leader is dead, and that there is no longer a reason for them to fight, imploring them to change as an organization so that they protect the world rather than kill innocent people. An unnamed Black Lotus commander questions why they should listen to her as she is a Dark One, but she reveals that her Gift was taken from her by Pilgrim. The Black Lotus eventually agree to help the warriors of the Badlands, and together they take face Pilgrim's army, defeating his Dark Ones and killing him to end the threat of the Meridian Chamber once and for all.
