No one can be so stupid! Cretin!
~ The Boss insulting Double-Six for his stupidity after shooting him by mistake.

The Boss and Double-Six are the main antagonists of the 1981 Lucky Luke comic book The One-Armed Bandit.

They are a duo of notorious crooks who attempt to stop the marketing of the Caille Brothers' Black Cat, a slot machine used for gambling, to avoid the end of professional gamblers. To do so, they use multiple traps and tactics to kill both Lucky Luke and the Caille Brothers, only to fail each time, mostly leading to Double-Six being abused by his own boss for his failures. Eventually, they abandon their mission and go to California, having signed a $400 contract for foods and bonuses from the Pony Express.

Appearance[]

The Boss[]

The Boss is a man who closely ressembles the French comedy actor Louis de Funès, wearing a green suit, an orange shirt and blue striped pants.

Double-Six[]

Double-Six is a fat, average weighted man wearing a red shirt and black pants hled by straps.

Biography[]

The Boss and Double-Six are first seen in the saloon of Poker Gulch, hearing that the unnamed proprietary of the Twenty One, a marketing company, plans to sign an order with the Caille Brothers for 10 of their machines. The Boss says that if these machines start showing up, it'll be the end of professional poker gamblers, meaning that they must stop the marketing of the Black Cat all around the United States. Double-Six decides to try out the machine himself, causing the Boss to whack him in the head with a bottle.

As they leave the saloon, they break the large mirror that was taken out earlier during the fight, causing the barman to sob. Having a plan, they decide to go to English Pass, a tunnel under a large mountain, allowing them to set up an ambush via sending boulders down. The Boss then tells Double-Six to stay and fire at anything that moves while the Boss goes on to block the opening of the pass with rocks. However, the Boss is nearly shot by Double-Six, due to his stupidity at not understanding that he must shoot anything that moves UNDER them, causing the Boss to become angry and stomp on him for it.

Their plan is thwarted when Lucky Luke and the Caille Brothers decide to climb up the mountain instead of going right through the tunnel, as they heard the gunshot from earlier. The Boss only realizes this when he sees the Caille Brothers, causing him to stomp on Double-Six's back again. Not only that, his screams also scared their horses away, meaning that they will have to travel on foot instead, calling him the "King of Cretins".

As they travel, they pass by two Indians, who claim that both of them have schizophrenia. Eventually, they stop at a town to get Double-Six's shoe "repaired". The Boss then asks a citizen where he could find a fresh horse in the town, with the latter saying he can find one at Joe's place. This worries Double-Six, as he asks why the Boss only took one horse. The Boss responds by saying that when funds are limited, it's necessary to restrain their purchases, plus running is good for their health, with the Boss sacrificing it by making the trip on horseback.

They then arrive to a train station, where they travel near a canyon with a bridge on it, allowing them to set up a plan to permanently stop the progress of Luke and the Caille Brothers by blowing it up. After setting up the dynamites under the bridge, he lets Double-Six light them up so they can explode under Luke and the Caille Brothers. However, due to his stupidity, Double-Six blows up the bridge before Luke and the Caille Brothers could travel on it, ruining the plan, causing Double-Six to get stomped once more.

Lucky Luke then catches them, with the Boss using excuses to get away, telling Luke that the bridge was blown up by two other bandits, but their cover were blown when Luke sees a dynamite inside his pocket, which leads to him blowing it up with a match, seemingly defeating the duo. At that point, the Boss tries to pull out hidden weapons inside his hat and clothers, only for Luke to shoot them away. He then decides to use his trump card, the mini-mini revolver, only for Luke to shoot it away as well. Luke then grabs the Boss upside down and shakes him around, causing many small revolvers and cards to fall out of him. As Luke was about to take them to prison for their crimes, the Boss and Double-Six flee. Lucky Luke attempts to catch them, but they are so fast that Luke failed to catch them and gave up on pursuing them.

Arriving at a town to think of a plan, they come across an employee of the Pony Express, who offers them a $400 contract with meals and bonuses with the other employees, ultimately abandoning their plan of stopping the marketing of the Black Cat as they go to California.

Trivia[]

  • The Boss is a caricature of famous French comedy actor Louis De Funès, even reusing the traits of the characters he had portrayed in films. Double-Six, on the other hand, is a caricature of French actor Patrick Préjean, the French voice actor of Sylvester from the Looney Tunes franchise.
  • Despite being the main antagonists, they only appear in 12 out of the 44 comic boards, representing 27% of the comic.
  • In the animated adaptation, the Boss was given the name of James O' Grady.
