The Brute represents raw physical danger and is intended to elicit a very primitive "survival instinct" feeling, like being chased by a boar or a tiger.
~ The fear the Brute represents.

The Brute is one of three main antagonists (the others being The Hunter and The Fiend) of the indie survival horror video game Monstrum and its sequel Monstrum II (the others being The Bhagra and The Malacosm), as well as a playable character in Dark Deception: Monsters and Mortals.

Appearance

True to his appearance and behavior, the Brute is a brutish monster that looked like a large, heavy-built, bipedal humanoid creature. At first glance, the creature resembles a humanoid rock/lava with an extremely hot, glowing core that causes orange light to project from its eyes and mouth. Closer inspection of the Brute, however, suggests that its body may be comprised of thick charred flesh, and that its hands and feet are curiously human like. The Brute does not appear to have eyes, though this does not affect its ability to see, suggesting it may possess some form of infrared vision or bat-like echolocation.

In Monstrum II, the Brute remains mostly unchanged, though as a whole he's grown slightly bulkier.

Personality

True to its name, the Brute is a brutal and aggressive monster that dependent on raw strength to maul the protagonist to death. The monster is also least intelligent compared to other monsters on the ship because of it's predictability and noises. Even so, the Brute is still intelligent in it's own way, as it can and will use shortcuts in a chase better than other monsters.

Biography

His origin is a mystery, though through notes it can be determined that he was a failed experiment, a human genetically manipulated with Turritopsis Dohrnii DNA in an attempt to create immortal humans, which was kept aboard a shipping container in the freight vessel Hisa Maru and sent somewhere before breaking free and killing most of the crew. The player must survive and escape The Brute who teams up with two other monsters The Hunter and The Fiend.

The Brute returns in the second game with a new design where he teams up with new monsters The Bhagra and The Malacosm who replace the Hunter and the Fiend from the first game against four people trying to escape from them.

Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals

The Brute, alongside the other Monstrum monsters, was added to the crossover game Dark Deception: Monsters & Mortals in a 2020 DLC pack.

Powers and Abilities

As its name suggests, the Brute's skillset revolves around raw strength and aggression.

  • Pyrokinesis: Befitting his magma-like appearance, the Brute appears to possess the ability to burn things via touch. One of his kills seems to involve scorching the main character's face and one of the notes implies he melted through the ship's engine.
  • Intelligence: In spite of being weak with distractions and noises, The Brute is actually quite intelligent as during the chase, it will taking any available shortcuts to get closer to the player by using raw speed and its disregard with doors as it knew it can break them easily.
  • Speed: The Brute is surprisingly fast in spite of his large size and weight. This makes him very dangerous in tightly knit areas, as the protagonist is given very little time to hide once the Brute sees them, which may force them to run. Although, his weight still hinders his running speed as it cannot catch the protagonist if both are in a straight sprint. Because it moves slowly when not actively chasing the player, the Brute is perhaps the least dangerous monster to deal with in a more open area, primarily because it can easily be seen from far away, and because the player should have ample time to start moving in the event that they are spotted.
  • Superhuman Strength: Due to its size, the Brute is immensely strong and unhindered by most physical obstacles such as doors, and will smash through them with little effort, even if they are power-locked. Despite the Brute's weight, it is strong enough to clamber up through the holes in the cargo hold very quickly.

Trivia

  • The Brute's behavior and looks were inspired by the Cave troll from The Lord of the Rings, the Tank from Left 4 Dead, and Killer Croc from the Batman: Arkham series.
  • The Brute is the only monster to appear in both games.
