“ | I am the queen of every hive. I am the fire on every hill. I am the shield over every head. I am the spear of battle. Who but I, am both the tree and the lightning that strikes it. | „ |
~ The Butcher's boastful speech in "Chapter 2". |
“ | Fat, lazy ingrates! Reeking with the stench of piety. Hast thou no loyalty? I bled for thee! And thou wouldst reward my devotion with apostasy... insolence... deceit! If thou wishes not to follow me in this life, thou will follow me in the next. We shall never leave this place. This is our land. I will soak this earth with our blood, let it mingle with the soil, tether us to these grounds forever! | „ |
~ The Butcher. |
Thomasin White, also known as The Butcher, is the main antagonist of the sixth season American Horror Story: Roanoke.
She is the leader of the lost Roanoke colony and the primary servant of Scáthach, who leads a mob of ghosts to kill anyone who sets foot on her land. This leads her into conflict with the Miller-Harris family.
She was portrayed by Susan Berger. In the re-enactment scenes of My Roanoke Nightmare, she was portrayed by Kathy Bates, who portrayed two other AHS villains, Delphine LaLaurie in American Horror Story: Coven, and Miriam Mead in American Horror Story: Apocalypse, as well as Annie Wilkes in Misery, Sunny Soke in Bad Santa 2, and The Squirrel Lady in Rat Race.
History[]
Early life[]
Tomasyn White was married to John Tomasyn, governor of Roanoke. White left his wife in charge of the Roanoke Colony while he returned to England to gather supplies. When food was scarce, Mr. Cage and White's son Ambrose asked after the scarce rations, but she would hear no more of rebellion. The colonists rebelled against her and left her to die, but she was saved by Scáthach, the Witch of the Woods, to whom she sold her soul. Later, the 116 settlers disappeared without a trace. Tomasyn, who regained control, haunted the woods around the settlement for centuries as a malevolent presence known in Virginia folklore as "the Butcher" .
Roanoke[]
When Matt and Shelby Miller move in to a house on the boundary of the woods, the Butcher begins to haunt and terrorize the young couple, ordering them to get out of "her land". She tries to drown Shelby in her outside hot tub at night, but Shelby manages to save herself. The Butcher's apparition later appears to Shelby while the latter drives through the area at night, and knocks her down with her car. The Butcher then leads Shelby deep into the forest, where she witnesses the ghostly colony scalping and mutilating a man as a sacrifice. The Butcher and Scáthach order the colony to seize and kill Shelby, but she manages to escape.
The Butcher later appears during Matt and Shelby's seance with medium Cricket Marlowe, and declares the land and house to be her territory and tells them to leave; she also frightens them by telekinetically breaking a candle and a few windows. When Cricket seeks her out again in the forest, she offers to return Lee Harris's missing daughter Flora, whom she kidnapped, in return for Matt and Shelby leaving her sacred ground.
The Butcher eventually kills Cricket and decides to sacrifice Flora anyway, only for her to be stopped by her son, Ambrose, allowing the Miller-Harris family to escape the land.
Return to Roanoke[]
The cast of My Roanoke Nightmare return to spend three days in on the Butcher's land during the blood moon, when Scáthach and the Butcher are at their most powerful.
After the group is terrorized by the various ghosts haunting the grounds, Agnes Mary Winstead, the actress who played the Butcher, goes into a dissociative state, lighting a fire and pretending to be the Butcher. This summons the real Butcher, who murders Agnes in front of her mob.
After Lee makes a deal with Scáthach, the Butcher allows the colonists to assist in slaughtering any remaining people on the land. After Lee commits suicide to save Flora, the Butcher leads her colony to murder all of the police officers sent to investigate the carnage.
