“ | You know, we've got a lot in common. You wouldn't be able to tell by the look of this place, but not so long ago, I used to work for G.U.N. as well. Though it wasn't called GUN back then. It was a military shadow ops program, run by a difficult... and very brilliant roboticist. | „ |
~ The Buyer remembering the day he worked for Dr. Robotnik |
The Buyer is the main antagonist of the 2024 Paramount+ action-adventure comedy miniseries, Knuckles, set in the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
He was originally a member of G.U.N., formerly associated with Dr. Robotnik, who became an infamous arms dealer and established a criminal operation that sells weapons modified from Dr. Robotnik's tech as well as quills from Knuckles himself. Because of this, the Buyer becomes Knuckles the Echidna's arch-nemesis upon crossing paths with him. He is also G.U.N.'s archenemy.
He was portrayed by Rory McCann, who also played Sandor Clegane in Game of Thrones, Jurgen the Brutal in Jumanji: The Next Level, and Goran Vedmire in The Legend of Vox Machina.
Appearance[]
The Buyer is a middle-aged and muscular man who has a dark-grayish beard and hair connected to each other, as well as often being seen with a skull-themed welding helmet while working. He even wears a geared vest, white shirt, brown overalls, and boots.
Personality[]
The Buyer is best described as a sociopath who isn't forgiving with failure and has a power-hungry agenda, wishing to harness enough to exact revenge on those who targeted him. Proven to be a homicidal maniac with a history, he best demonstrates it when threatening Willoughby and Mason for failing to capture Knuckles and is quite sadistic, torturing Knuckles via absorbing his energy.
Despite this, the Buyer does tend to be reasoned with after hearing Willoughby's side of wanting vengeance on GUN and spared them for the meantime should they live up to their tasks. He is also capable of engaging with pragmatic tactics, such as handing out weapons for Willoughby and Mason, stating that they'll need more than "arrogance" and to not underestimate Knuckles' capabilities.
Biography[]
Past[]
Nothing is known about the Buyer's early life, though what is known about him is that he was originally a former mechanic working for the government (prior to the founding of G.U.N.) and was under assisting Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik until the latter ended up being met with obsessing over capturing Sonic the Hedgehog and was defeated from the first time. Due to this and the government erasing all connections related to Dr. Robotnik, they sent a squad to kill the Buyer, due to working for him. However, it's implied he took them out and possibly killed them. He was, however, scarred by the neck as a result.
Knuckles[]
Years later, the Buyer started building up an empire of his own, creating weapons from Dr. Robotnik's tech and began selling them to his clients worldwide. Discovering Knuckles' presence, he eventually took interest in the Echidna warrior and was later binding in a deal with Agent Willoughby and Agent Mason, two former G.U.N. members, with the task of capturing Knuckles.
The Buyer is later contacted by Agent Willoughby that Knuckles had just left Green Hills, and the Buyer sends Willoughby and Mason some technology that was charged via the quills of Knuckles.
Soon, the Buyer gets furious at the two agents for their failure and stated his former involvement with G.U.N. before the rebranding of the latter, eliminating the agents sent for him, and going into hiding. Willoughby then explained her reasons as to why she betrayed G.U.N., the Buyer then listens to her and uses a blowtorch to melt both Willoughby and Mason's cuffs, and the Buyer then states that their only reward will this time be their lives if they succeed in capturing Knuckles.
Much sooner, outside of the bowling tournament, the Buyer causes chaos in one of his inventions being a mech powered by Knuckles' quills and he begins to dominate the fight easily, proudly claiming it was too easy. He then gets a lot more violent and throws the echidna into the bowling alley and drags him out with then starting to extract the energy from him. After his objective gets complete, the Buyer throws Knuckles aside, but was recently confronted by Wade Whipple, alongside his mother and sister, and Wade used the gauntlets from Mason throwing bowling balls at the Buyer while making an attempt to motivate Knuckles. Wade runs out of bowling balls and the Buyer prepares to kill him.
Just before he delivered the blow, Knuckles wakes up and extracts his energy back from the Buyer's mech. He soon unleashes the Flames of Disaster, enraging the Buyer as he once again fights Knuckles, Knuckles manages to easily dominate the fight and begins to destroy the mech, leaving the Buyer to scream in fury. Knuckles jumps into the air and Wade yells him to finish him off, Wade shoots the right glove and hits the support of the giant bowling ball of the building causing the ball to fall, Knuckles grabs it and throws it down at the Buyer, who screams in terror. The ball then crushes the Buyer, killing him once and for all.

Trivia[]
- The Buyer is never referred to by his name at any point in the show.
- The Buyer might be inspired by various Sonic comic book villains, including Dr. Zachary. They both are archenemies of Knuckles, are elderly men with grey hair, worked with Dr. Robotnik, and use mech suits to fight Knuckles, Dr. Finitevus and the Buyer are both make ring-based weapons, Dr. Starline and the Buyer were both former accomplices of Robotnik that had an admiration for him, were killed by falling rubble, and create their own empires using Eggman tech. Clutch the Opossum and the Buyer are both elderly crime lords.
- The Buyer, Pachacamac, the Echidna Tribe, and Professor Gerald Robotnik might be the only antagonists who were killed. In the first Sonic the Hedgehog film, the Roadhouse Thug and his henchmen were beaten up, Dr. Robotnik was banished to the Mushroom Planet, and Agent Stone's fate was unknown. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the Scavengers' fate was unknown, Dr. Robotnik fell to the ground, but didn't die (Jim Carrey revealed that he was going to be in Sonic the Hedgehog 3), and Agent Stone disguised himself as a G.U.N. agent, so that he could escape from the other G.U.N. agents. In the Knuckles TV series, Agent Willoughby and Agent Mason's fates were unknown, Jack Sinclair ran away after being defeated by his former best friend, Wade, and Pistol Pete Whipple lost the bowling tournament, and was presumably arrested. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Agent Stone's third fate was unknown, and Shadow and Dr. Robotnik redeemed and sacrificed himself. And even though the after credits scene revealed that the former survived the explosion, it didn't reveal the latter's third fate.
- The Buyer is a dark foil to Knuckles. Both of them wanted to get revenge on someone because of something that they did. Knuckles wanted to get revenge on Sonic because his first adoptive mother, Longclaw, killed his father and his tribe. The Buyer, on the other hand, wanted to get revenge on G.U.N. because they tried to kill him, due to the fact that he worked for Dr. Robotnik. But while Knuckles redeemed himself after being betrayed by Dr. Robotnik, the Buyer didn't redeem himself, and tried to drain Knuckles' power, so that he could use it to get revenge on G.U.N. If Knuckles let his anger and vengeance consume him, he would've ended up like the Buyer.
- The Buyer could also be a darker version of Dr. Robotnik, representing what he would've become if he became too obsessed with Sonic's power.
- Since the Buyer once worked with Robotnik, there could be a chance that he knows who Agent Stone is.
