The Cabal is the name of two teams of Supervillains serving as the main antagonists of seasons 1 and 4 of the 2010 animated series Avengers Assemble. Both incarnations serve as the countermeasure to the Avengers.

History[]

First Incarnation[]

The first incarnation of the Cabal was brought up by Red Skull after his and MODOK's defeat at the hands of the recently returned Avengers. He sent a message out to several candidates. One of which was Dr. Doom, who flat out refused to help. One such person was Tony Stark's rival, Justin Hammer, who expressed great interest in joining the Cabal. While Justin repetitively failed to join, his invention, the Super-Adaptoid, was retooled into a drone for MODOK. The Cabal would later be joined by Attuma, Dracula, and Hyperion. The Cabal had various levels of success, despite much infighting. One of these was the theft of the Tesseract, a powerful cosmic relic. Using it, Red Skull appeared to give his allies their own worlds via portals. However, Iron Man was able to reveal the portals were actually traps intended to kill them. The Cabal would reluctantly ally themselves to the Avengers to fight Skull. Red Skull was then banished to the far side of the universe to greet his master, Thanos.

Second Incarnation[]

The Second Incarnation of the Cabal was created after the defeat of Ultron, and Tony Stark's banishment to an alternate reality, and serve as the main antagonists of the first half of season 4: Secret Wars. This new version was made up of The Leader, Kang the Conqueror, The Enchantress, Skurge the Executioner, and Arnim Zola. The Leader was used by the other members of the Cabal in order to send the Avengers across time and space for various reasons:

Kang the Conqueror needed Falcon's help to stabilize a rift in the Space-Time Continuum that could destroy reality, only to use it for himself.
Skurge the Executioner attached an enchanted bracelet to Hulk's arm, which would control when he or Bruce was in control. Skurge would then hunt Hulk/Banner across Asgard.
Amora the Enchantress would keep Thor for herself as her private bodyguard.
Arnim Zola would send Captain America, Black Widow, and Hawkeye to Dimension Z, with the intent of stealing Captain America's body.

All of their plans would fail when Black Panther created the New Avengers and each member would save the original team with the help of Jane Foster. Upon returning to Earth, the two teams discovered that the real leader of the Cabal was actually Loki. He used the Avengers disappearance to take over Earth with the Casket of Ancient Winters and a fleet of World Breaker Ships. With the help of Doctor Strange, the Avengers were able to defeat Loki.
