How dare you?!
~ The Candy Shop Owner showing resentment towards Jimmy for stopping him from turning Nancy into candy.

The unnamed Candy Shop Owner is the main antagonist of the 2010 short film The Candy Shop. He initially presented himself as a creepy yet innocuous businessman who tried to sell several candies towards several important men as he puts it and tries his best to help the protagonist, Jimmy, getting him out from the hardships of being a paperboy by taking him as an apprentice under his wing, the Candy Shop Owner hides a rather grisly truth as it was revealed that he kidnapped several girls that he encountered and forcefully turned them into candy to be sold for profit.

He is portrayed by Doug Jones, who also portrayed Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth and Ghoul Marcus in Ouija: Origin of Evil.

Appearance[]

The candy shop owner could be described as a creepier and much more evil version of Willy Wonka. He is described as an eccentric man wearing rather heavy makeup and despite taking an appearance of a 1920s businessman with a top hat, his clothes could be considered as eccentric due to the avant-garde colors of his suit and also wearing gloves. This makes sense as he is portrayed as a creepy human trafficker that preys on innocent girls. After he removed his own makeup and dentures, he is revealed to be nothing but an ugly old man with a dirty black teeth that represents his true nature as a heartless human trafficker who will not stop on getting what he wants, even doing some business towards "Important men" to gain more profit as he puts it.

Personality[]

The unnamed candy shop owner initially presented himself as an eccentric yet creepy man who seemingly sold several candies towards several men that came into his candy shop. In addition to all of this, he is also presented with a seemingly noble facade at first as he tries to help Jimmy to get out of his misery in order to help him cure his sickly mom. However, at the end of the day, all of his polite and noble personality was revealed to be an act as he attempts to kill Jimmy for morally objecting to his plans of turning others into candy and attempted to kill him once he interfered. Not only that, the candy shop owner enjoys anonymity from his crimes, as people like Jimmy’s employer insist that “it’s none of our business” and turn a blind eye.

In truth, the candy shop owner was a greedy child kidnapper and a murderer who tries to forcefully turn innocent girls that came to his shop into candy and sell them for a profit and when Jimmy refused his offer, he condescendingly calls him as nothing but a mere paperboy and callously dismisses his concerns towards not wanting to turn Nancy into candy and starts his operation to turn his best friend into a candy to be sold. When Jimmy tries to stop him, the candy shop owner then went into a murderous rampage and tries his best to keep his own little empire on selling girls that were forcefully sold as a candy going. This truly makes sense as he is a metaphor for child traffickers that were roaming around in Atlanta which made him a lot more chilling when he was presented in the short film.

Biography[]

Jimmy works as a paperboy to collect funds for his ill mother. One day, he passes by a candy shop. Curiously, he explores the shop, uncovering a dark secret.

The Candy Shop Owner manipulates Jimmy by inviting the latter to work for him as an apprentice so that he could get enough money to treat his mother. Jimmy comes across several candies in the store, one of them with a bow from one of his victims. It was revealed that they were made from girls he kidnapped and massacred. The owner would lure innocent girls outside the store and kidnap them before using them to make his candy. This of course, resulted in parents putting "wanted" posters to find their missing daughter thanks to him. Horrified by that reality, Jimmy rejects the offer.

Jimmy continues to work as a paperboy, struggling to earn money for his mother. However, he finds out that his best friend, Nancy was captured by the candy shop owner, much to his distraught. Jimmy plans to seek revenge on the owner and save Nancy. When he reaches the candy shop, the owner desperately commands him to push the button and kill his friend. Instead, he refuses, and the owner condescendingly calls him a mere paperboy and pushes the button anyway.

Jimmy then tries to sabotage the machine. Frustrated, the owner desperately attempts to beat Jimmy with a pipe. He mentions that this isn't the first time that others had tried to stop his plans and tries to shred him with the machine. Jimmy responds by shoving the owner in the deepest part of the machine, killing the heartless murderer for good. However, at the same time, it turns out that Jimmy was too late to save Nancy as she was turned into a candy. But, Jimmy manages to reverse the process and manages to save Nancy and the fallen girls who were turned into candy at the end of the day. Most of them were saved and return safely to their families, although there are some of them were beyond saving. The story ends up with someone spreading a flyer about a candy store opening of which Jimmy tore down straight after seeing it.
