The Caretaker of the House of Happy Children is the overarching antagonist of the 2007 South Korean movie Hansel and Gretel.

Biography[]

The Caretaker is a nameless man and owner of the orphanage named the House of Happy Children. He keeps the children imprisoned in filthy rooms with cockroaches.

One day, he brings food to the children. They rush to eat it, but one of them accidentally spills some at the Caretaker’s feet. He grabs the boy to punish him. Man-bok begs him to spare his adoptive brother and clings to his leg, only for the Caretaker to slap and crush him with his shoe. Taking also Man-bok for his defiance, he throws the two boys in another room as punishment.

Another day, Jung Soon is expelled from her school. The Caretaker asks her if this is because of her habit of sleepwalking or because she misses home too much. Caressing her, he prepares to take her into a room to rape her, but her older sister Young Hee interferes and begs the Caretaker to rape her instead, claiming that Jung Soon is too small and thin, to which the Caretaker accepts.

Some time later, the social worker visits the orphanage to see if the children are happy. The Caretaker picks up Man-bok, Young Hee and Jung Soon, wakes them up and takes them to see the woman. The man lies to the worker, saying he's doing his best to take care of them. It turns out that the social worker has brought Santa Claus. Santa tells the children that, from now on, they can have whatever they want just by thinking about it.

Later, the Caretaker severely beats a boy with a stick outside the house. Man-bok, Young Hee and Jung Soon figure out that another one died of starvation. However, they are surprised by the Caretaker who takes them to the kitchen. He opens the hearth and takes a log of wood to hit Man-bok for wandering around the house without permission and for daring to stare at him. But the three children, having had enough of the abuse and rebelling, push the man towards the fireplace using their telekinetic powers. Eventually, he is pushed into the hearth and burned to death.

Personality[]

The Caretaker is abusive in the worst way possible. He is extremely brutal and willfully neglectful, deliberately keeping children under the care in horrendous conditions and beating them for the slightest reasons. He is also a pedophile, clearly attracted by Yong-Sun and Young-Hee and having raped them several times.

Despite this, he can show himself to be manipulative and fake politeness in some situations like the visit of the social worker. When his children rebel against him, he is shown to be afraid of his death, being completely confused and asking them to stop.
