The unnamed Mexican drug cartel, simply known as just The Cartel, are the overarching antagonists of the crime drama series Breaking Bad and the main antagonists of its prequel series Better Call Saul.
Based on the real-life Juárez Cartel, the Cartel was an drug cartel operating in Mexico and the Southwestern United States. It was known for its brutality, instilling fear into drug rivals, law enforcement, and the public through often violent executions. Led by Eladio Vuente and various other dons, including Juan Bolsa and Hector Salamanca, the Cartel was a hierarchical criminal organization with a chain of command, notably enlisting many members of the Salamanca Family as dons, high-ranking enforcers, assassins, or low-level bodyguards.
Despite being known for decades as one of the most powerful criminal empires in the Southwest, the Cartel would face imminent destruction through a series of calculated moves carried out by Gustavo Fring, one of its highest ranked distributors, who sought revenge on the Cartel after Hector murdered Fring's business partner, Max Arciniega.
