~ Molly to the Chairman before she disintegrates him with her joy touch.
The Chairman is the main antagonist of the 2021 Disney Channel comedy and fantasy series The Ghost and Molly McGee.
He is the former ruler of the Ghost Realm, responsible for assigning ghosts to create misery across the Human Realm. It is later revealed that he feeds off of the misery generated by humans, and thus punishes those who fail to feed him by sentencing them to the Flow of Failed Phantoms. He was the leader of the Ghost Council, and the archenemy of Scratch and Molly McGee.
The Chairman is the ruler of all the ghosts that exist in the series, and is seen to be very different in appearance from most the other ghosts that have appeared in the series. Instead of being made of ectoplasm like the others, he resembles a spirit, his hands are actually made from bones, and his face closely resembles a skull. He always wears a black cloak that overshadows most of his appearance.
He is the tallest of all the ghosts that have appeared so far.
Personality[]
The Chairman believes that it is a ghost's duty to cause as much misery in the human world as possible, so he can feed off from it, and will punish any ghost that does not live up to his standards.
He is mostly emotionless, as he spends most of his time at the Council table waiting for more ghosts to check on his performance. He is mostly silent throughout the series, since he only speaks in grunts, noises and thumb gestures, he is probably incapable of speaking normally.
We rarely see him express any sort of emotion, and when he does, it's usually a change in his facial expression, but despite the fact that he never speaks and remains mostly silent standing in the same spot most of the time, the Chairman clearly is a very intelligent being and has shown signs of a sadistic personality.
The most emotion he has shown so far is when he winced in concern after Molly McGee touched him, and shortly after when he screamed in horror as he was being destroyed by the joy.
Biography[]
Past[]
Very little is known about The Chairman, except that he, along with The Ghost Council, have been punishing ghosts that have failed to spread misery on the Human World for an unknown amount of time, by sending them to the Flow of Failed Phantoms. It is ultimately revealed that he is the embodiment of misery itself and that he needs to spread it in the Human World to feed.
He is the most feared in the Ghost World for obvious reasons.
The Ghost and Molly McGee[]
The Curse[]
The Chairman first appeared, along with the Ghost Council, while punishing one of the ghosts, a pink ghost, for allowing her town to become too joyful. Her excuse that she couldn't compete with a dog rescue wasn't enough, and she was sent to the Flow of Failed Phantoms.
He and the Ghost Council then summoned Scratch, in which they deemed him 'adequate' for keeping Brighton's misery levels high.
At the end of the first episode, unbeknownst to Scratch, the Chairman notices that Brighton's misery has slightly gone down.
The (Un)natural and The Turnip Twist[]
He briefly appears in both episodes along with the Ghost Council, but he is seen as a background character in both.
At the end of "The Turnip Twist", he and the Council are not pleased by the Brighton's misery levels decreasing.
All Systems No[]
He appears again along with the Ghost Council, where he gives his approval to the council's decision to promote Scratch by doing a thumbs-up signal. He later seems to be weirded out because of Scratch incapability to say "yes".
Scratch the Surface[]
He does not appear physically, but he is briefly seen along with the Council sending Scratch to the Flow of Failed Phantoms in his imagination sequence using the puzzle pieces.
Game Night[]
He is seen in the middle of punishing a green ghost along with the Council until they are interrupted by Scratch.
A Very Hungry Ghost[]
He first appears in the background of the Council location as always, until the Council notices Scratch's food. He approves the idea of going to attend the feast, and goes to the Human World, scaring away all the other ghosts that were there.
The Chairman showed some suspicion after Molly calls Scratch her buddy, but doesn't do much other than glare in response. He also glared and hissed, when Scratch asked if he was going to eat anything, before leaving along with the rest of the Council once they were done with their food.
Scare Tactics[]
He is seen as the "special ghost guest" of the Scaring Seminar, he evaluates the scaring abilities of some of the ghosts, even sending a pink ghost to the Flow of Failed Phantoms.
Scratch was almost sent to the Flow of Failed Phantoms but ended up being saved by Geoff, and even gives his approval to the "Special Scare Method" (Actually Molly being scared by Darryl's spider) from Scratch.
The Jig is Up[]
The Council, including the Chairman, appears summoning Scratch to see them. They reveal that joy in Brighton was on the rise, and ask if he knew anything about it. Scratch denies this, so they deduce there is a "Joy Agent" and send joy hunter Jinx to find it. When Jinx discovered Scratch was friends with Molly McGee, she drags him off to the Council for punishment.
Molly Vs. The Ghost World[]
Following up from the last episode, Jinx brings Scratch before the Ghost Council and reveals his friendship with Molly. They then proceed to put Scratch on trial, having several ghosts from throughout the season as witnesses. Before they can send him to the Flow of Failed Phantoms, Molly, who had become a Wraith, interrupts and states that Scratch shouldn't be punished.
Scratch vouches for her, stating she was right. At first, the Council seems touched, but then decide to send both of them to the Flow instead. However, this ultimately backfires, since everything Molly touches turns to joy, and the Flow begins to collapse, much to their shock, freeing all the ghosts that were sent there. After Molly and Scratch are freed, she boops The Chairman on the nose, overloading him with her joy, and destroying him, leaving only his cloak and a trail of flowers, much to the horror of the council. Molly then tells the council that she was leaving with Scratch, asking if they had a problem with it. However, the council and Jinx, now terrified of Molly after what she did to their leader, simply back down without a fight.
Season 2[]
The destruction of the Flow of Failed Phantoms and the death of the Chairman had several consequences for the Ghost World, as the ghosts no longer had any central authority figure to rule over them, and The Ghost Council was disbanded.
The New (Para)Normal[]
Shortly after the events of the previous season, the Barrister Ghosts, now practically powerless, invited Scratch to become the "new Chairman", even being offered the previous Chairman's robes, it was also revealed that "who takes down the previous one, becomes the new Chairman", and since Scratch was technically the one who banished him (Molly doesn't count since she is a human), he was the only eligible candidate. While Scratch at first tried to reject it, he was then forced to accept the new title after it was revealed that a highly dangerous type of ghouls known as the "Frightmares" which were kept in the Flow of Failed Phantoms for the safety of both human and ghost world, were released, and that they only obeyed orders from The Chairman.
After donning his robes and becoming the new Chairman, Scratch took on the appearance of the previous one, but it is also shown that he can switch between his normal appearance and the Chairman-like one just by removing his robes.
Book Marks the Sprite[]
Scratch once again poses as the old Chairman and assumes his appearance to scare the Story Sprite that was destroying the library, just like he did with the Frightmares, but it didn't work.
A Doll to Die For[]
Scratch again assumes the appearance of The Chairman to banish Lord Doom, whom, just like the Frightmares, got accidentally freed from the Flow of Failed Phantoms by Molly, and he ends up trapping Lord Doom into a doll.
The (After)life of the Party[]
The Chairman is referred by Jinx as "the real Chairman", and it is revealed that Jinx still intents to avenge his defeat and death at the hands of both Scratch and Molly McGee, starting in this episode by messing with Scratch and Geoff’s friendship.
Frightmares on Main Street[]
A cardboard cutout of The Chairman can be seen as one of the decorations for Molly's house of horrors.
Later, when Scratch is confronting the Frightmares, he mentions that, despite not being "a fan" of the old Chairman, he now understands why the previous Chairman locked away all the Frightmares on the Flow of Failed Phantoms.

Trivia[]
He was revealed to be capable of leaving the Ghost World in "A Very Hungry Ghost".
In this episode, the fact that he can't eat normal food is foreshadowed when Scratch asks if he's gonna eat anything or just "stand there all creepy", with The Chairman making an angry face after being asked this.
It's believed that the Chairman is intended to be the series' equivalent of the Grim Reaper, due to his cloaked appearance, skeleton hands and skull-like face, although this is unconfirmed.
His beta design (Seen in the gallery above) resembled a lot to that of the Grim Reaper.
"The Chairman" is not probably his real name, but only his title as leader of The Council.
As The Chairman is the embodiment of misery, its likely that Molly was able to kill him when her joy overpowered his misery and destroyed him.
It's possible that the Chairman is related to the Sobgoblins in some way, who similarly feed off of sadness and misery and are shown to be beings that came from the Ghost World instead of being deceased humans.
According to Bob Roth, the Chairman is actually genderless, but he is mostly referred as a male based on his appearance.
Curiously, the trail of flowers combined with his cloak left after his death form the colors of the non-binary flag.
It was said by one of the show's creators that he ate misery because he liked the taste.
After it was revealed in "The New (Para)Normal" that there are rules stating that "the ghost that takes down the previous Chairman becomes the new one", and that the robe gives you the unique Chairman appearance as seen with Scratch, it could be implied that this was not the first Chairman to exist and that he was once a normal ghost, but it is still just a theory.
The Chairman could be considered a foil to Scratch, symbolizing what he might've become if he hadn't made friends with Molly.
