Elegy Salvage: Why don't you fight?
Nomad: Who?
Elegy Salvage: Everyone. The voice in my head held me back most of the time, then let me loose when there was somebody to fight. Now... I want to fight everyone.
~ Elegy showing the Charred mindset.

The Charred are the secondary antagonists of the Brandon Sanderson novel The Sunlit Man. They are a type of being from the planet of Canticle that are created using energy from the planet's special sun and putting it inside of living humans. As the Charred, the humans' personalities are destroyed, leaving only a violent monster. They were created by the TimeTellers, who taught the Cinder King how to make and control them. The Cinder King used them in his army until control was taken from him by Rebeke Salvage, who instead wanted to rehabilitate them.

Description[]

The Charred look like the people they were in life, only their pectorals, rib cage, and heart will burn away. They are replaced with seared and blackened skin, as well as a sunheart, which is a glowing red, emberlike crystal.

Upon being transformed into a Charred, the new creature lost all memories of their former lives, which could not be restored. They became naturally violent creatures that constantly felt a strong urge to attack those around them, even if it was impractical. The only way for them to fight these urges was to be reigned by a Sunlit One, who could control them, or practiced willpower.

History[]

The Charred were discovered the Timetellers, a group of Scandrian researchers living on Canticle and hoping to learn how the planet worked. When they were discovered by the Cinder King, they gave him the knowledge of how to create and control the Charred in exchange for cinder hearts, which they wanted to study.

The Cinder King began to use the Charred to make up his military and take over the planet. He held competitions where the most powerful warriors would become one of them. Under the Cinder King, the Charred seemed like nothing more than killing machines fully obedient to him.

Sometime later, an off-worlder arrived on the planet and managed to disconnect on of the Charred from the Cinder King. Although still violent, the disconnected Charred had her own mind and joined the fight against her former master. The Cinder King was killed shortly thereafter, releasing all the Charred from his control, leading to them rampaging across Canticle.
