“ | Exposure to It has turned your mystery into fear, and the principle behind it has begun to control you. We wonder... what you will become now. We know nothing, either. For we are just as ignorant of <it>. An ominous light, uninterpreted, uncomprehended, uncommunicated, simply arriving. An inscrutable idea with no purpose, no communication... The greatest enemy of our Gematria... We call it The Chroma. | „ |
~ Beatrice. |
The Chroma is the overarching antagonist of Blue Archive. This entity is a mysterious, supernatural, god-like being. Like Sensei and Gematria, it is an outsider to Kivotos and cannot be scientifically explained. It is also the master of Shiroko Terror, Phrenapates and A.R.O.N.A.
Personality[]
While the Chroma is known to be a natural phenomenon with no will, mind, or personality, it strongly suggests that it has a personality by contacting Shiroko in the Bad Future Timeline, turning her mystery into terror and transforming her into a death god, stealing all of Gematria's research findings and turning them into guardians of the False Sanctums, and sending Phrenapates, the beings that resurrected Sensei's corpse as the undead, showing that it certainly has an awareness of communication.
Biography[]
In the past, Trinity General School was very aware of the Chroma. They've studied it to some extent, even going so far as to keep detailed records of their ability to "superimpose parallel worlds through multidimensional interpretation and use them as weapons", and the basilica of the Arius branch of Trinity, which broke away from them, has records of the Chroma in its stained glass, and Sakurako realizes from both sources that the old Trinity was also dangerous with the Chroma. This reveals that the Chroma is an entity that has been active since ancient times.
It is said that the people of Kivotos and Gematria in the distant past were aware of the dangers of the Chroma long before, and that Gematria, who is an organization experimenting about Kivotos, cannot communicate with, study, research, and cannot easily accept it as a natural phenomenon that, like radioactivity, can only be corrupted by being exposed to it, so they dismissed it as a will-less natural phenomenon, strictly forbade its use, and ended the story by treating it as if it did not exist at all, If the story had ended there, the chances of the Chroma finding Kivotos on their own would have been as slim as finding a grain of salt in the desert.
In the alternate timeline, where Sensei failed to change the future, it manipulated the Nameless Priests, tricking them into thinking they were using Sensei to create the Guide of Chroma, turning Shiroko Sunaookami into Nameless Goddess Anubis, and transforming Sensei's body into a transcendent undead called Phrenapates, to use them to launch a genocide against all residents in Kivotos, which succeeded in destroying the city.
In the main timeline, Beatrice performed the ritual of contacting the Chroma prophesied in the Arius basilica ruins to become a god, and as Beatrice, who was observing the Chroma, also observed it, The Chroma got an opportunity to invade the main timeline. Due to Beatrice's hatred for Sensei, even the coordinates of Kivotos in the main timeline were delivered, so it set the city as a clear target and came closer. It led to the sending of Shiroko Terror to Gematria's base of operations to mercilessly attack Black Suit, Maestro, and Golconde & Decalcomanie as they attempted to prepare a "Parousia" against it, which led to the disbanding of Gematria, with Black Suit and Maestro seriously injured, Decalcomanie unaffected, but Golconde's persona disappeared, and in his place became Francis, who was deemed even more dangerous than Beatrice. It stole all of Gematria's research, destroyed the Sanctum Tower in preparation for destroying Kivotos, established the False Sanctum as it destroyed the Sanctum Tower, and turned Binah, Chesed, Hod, Shiro & Kuro, Hieronymus, and Perorodzilla into guardians of the False Sanctums.
However, thanks to the efforts of Sensei and the students, the False Sanctum is destroyed, Phrenapates was dead, and Shiroko Terror and A.R.O.N.A redeemed herself due to her main timeline self (Shiroko and Arona), hinting that while it plans to destroy Kivotos ended in failure, the Chroma wasn't gone and will return once again.
Trivia[]
- Its motif appears to be Howard Phillips Lovecraft's novel, The Colour Out of Space. The depiction of the existence of 'Iridescence' appearing outside of Kivotos to destroy Kivotos is similar to the story of a novel in which the mysterious color that appeared from an alien meteorite contaminates and destroys the entire land.
- The Chroma was once called by fans by the name "the Iridescence", and its former official name in the GB server is "the Color".
