The Church Guy is a minor character in Left 4 Dead, he is encountered in the safe room at the end of the third chapter "The Church" of Death Toll, he was as well the only survivor in the fictional town of Riverside. He is never really seen until he became infected.
He was voiced by Nathan Vetterlein who is best known for voicing the Scout from Team Fortress 2.
Biography[]
The Church Guy is a survivor of the Green Flu Outbreak. It is unknown if he's simply a civilian, military or CEDA personnel, or if he is a priest or any formal clergy member of the Riverside First Church. The church was at some point, set up as a CEDA evacuation center. Unfortunately, CEDA was unable to stop the virus from spreading and soon, the church was completely overrun, forcing the other survivors, CEDA and military personnel to flee, leaving the Church Guy as the lone remaining survivor at the evacuation center. As a result, he quickly took refuge in a safe room located inside the church.
It is later revealed that at some point, another survivor approached the safe room and the Church Guy, out of obvious sympathy, let him inside. Unfortunately, that said survivor ended up being infected and ended up biting him. Because of this, he grew mentality unstable and began to suffer from extreme paranoia of other survivors and the infected. He then constantly keep ensuring himself that he was immune to the infection because he had not turned infected after an hour. He also now constantly states the phrase: "Better safe than sorry" to calm himself down. When the players eventually encounter the Church Guy inside the safe room, he refuses to allow them inside even though they must get get inside of the safe room to continue their quest. In an attempt for them to prove their immunity to him, he attracts a large horde of the infected using the church's bell.
After the survivor's succeed in killing the horde, it is revealed that the Church Guy is not actually immune as he hoped. He starts to either cough, gag, or growl viciously before he finally succumbs to the Green Flu. The door to the safe room then finally opens revealing that he has either mutated into a Boomer, Smoker, or Hunter. He is then shot and killed by survivors very quickly.
Left 4 Dead[]
Players encounter the Church Guy at the end of the third chapter in "Death Toll", when a Survivor tries to open the door, he refuses, stating he will not let them in until he is sure that they're immune. He gives them a "test" to pass: he rings a bell, attracting a horde of zombies (the Crescendo event of the chapter). After the Survivors survive the attack, the Church Guy starts grudling, growling, and coughing. When the survivors finally open the door, he has already turned into either a Boomer, Smoker, or Hunter, depending on what was heard when the door is opened.
