“ | The Company is hiring! You'll have your very own ship, your very own crew. Your job, collect worthless garbage to return to the company desk. It's easy! | „ |
~ The misleading advertising of the Company. |
The Company are the titular overarching protagonists of the 2023-2024 co-op indie horror game Lethal Company. They are a mysterious corporate identity that encourages its hired workers to collect scrap from several moons.
Overview[]
The company is known to contract workers to collect scrap from various abandoned and industrialized moons in order to meet their profit quota. The company advertises that its job is easy and appears to offer decent pay with a contract that only lasts a season. If any group of employees failed to met said quota, the company would always fire them by throwing them off their ship and into the vacuum of space, killing them.
From their assessment exam, which is done on the phone, from their future employees signing the contract, no member of the company is ever present during the process, with even the voice from the phone interview sounding fake. Each shuttle that transports its employees is also autopiloted, leaving the workers with no person to interact other than their own crewmates.
The Company building resides on the moon Gordion, and near the front sell desk workers can drop off any scrap they've collected, a mysterious creature later takes the scrap once its small door opens after the workers ring the bell next to it.
History[]
About everything regarding the Company is shrouded in mystery, but it's known thanks to some old logs that they've existed since 1968. On August 22 of that same year, the company hired a crew of four people named Sigurd, Richard, Desmond and Jess. Throughout his season working for the company, Sigurd began writing logs in the terminal of his crew's ship.
After a few days, Sigurd began hearing screams behind the big wall from the Company building whenever his crew went to sell their scrap. Slowly starting to question the nature of the Company, believing that the job was very shady, Sigurd was startled by the death of one of his crewmates, Richard, who was killed by a Bracken weeks after he began writing his logs.
When reporting Rich's death to the company, the same fake voice heard on his phone interview answered and informed Sigurd that they'd send a replacement. On October 3, 1968, Desmond encrypted Sigurd's records to hide them in the ship's terminal, concluding that their real job was to keep a terrifying monster fed. The final fate of Sigurd and his crew is unknown.
