~ The Copycat to his first victim, imitating Josef

The Copycat is the main antagonist of the first episode of the second season of the found-footage horror franchise Creep.

He was portrayed by David Dastmalchian who also played Gareth & Gareth Pike in Dexter resurrection, Jack Delroy in Late Night With the Devil, Dwight Pollard in Gotham, Thomas Schiff in The Dark Knight, Murdoc in the MacGyver reboot series, Abra Kadabra in The Flash, Polka Dot Man in The Suicide Squad and Piter de Vries in Dune.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

A few years prior to the events of the first episode, the Copycat came across one of the films on the Dark Web that Josef made of killing Aaron. He quickly became obsessed with it, and decided to start his own killing spree while idolizing and copying the movie he saw. He even bought a Wolfie mask to resemble the one Josef was wearing. At some point, he lures one unknown person to his home, using the same method Josef did, offering them possibly 100 dollars to film him for one day. Later, he overpowers the person, probably knocking them out before tying them to a chair.

The Creep Tapes (2025)[]

Shortly after telling the unknown person with a voice changer that they will always be his favorite victim, he kills them using an axe and while wearing the Wolfie mask. He records the murder and possibly uploads it onto the Dark Web. He contacts Josef by placing an ad, “cameraman needed”, which is similar to how the latter lures his victims. When Josef arrives at the secluded cottage, the Copycat greets the former warmly, attempting to recreate Josef's emotional manipulative style. After the arrival of Josef, the Copycat wants to recreate the “Tubby-Time” scene from the first film where the latter first mentions that he is suicidal and could just end it all. Josef sees it as some kind of invitation and tries to drown the Copycat, but fails. After the attempted drowning, both of them sit in the living room where they play a game called “One good drink, one bad drink”, where the bad drink is the one with poison in it. Josef secretly and knowingly takes the bad drink, letting the Copycat think he won the game. He proceeds to bring Josef down in his basement, where he also killed the unknown person, and ties him up. The Copycat thinks that he won and perhaps thinks he's finally proven his worth. However, that is all part of Josef's plan, who points out how his imitation is hollow. Josef manages to escape the ropes binding him to the chair and quickly grabs the Copycat's axe but actually hands it to the latter, as if killing him is his “rite of passage“ to kill and prove himself. The Copycat then turns the axe on himself, committing suicide by striking his own head.

Personality[]

The Copycat is a fragile, obsessive, and insecure imitator searching for identity and approval. His entire personality is a hollow mask, and when challenged by his idol, he breaks in the most catastrophic ways.

Trivia[]

  • The creators Mark Duplass and Patrick Brice actually wrote the episode for David Dastmalchian. According to TV Insider, Duplass and Brice were fans of Dastmalchian, and when they realized who he was, they thought: “Let’s have someone imitate Peachfuzz instead of replacing him.”
  • Dastmalchian had attended a screening of The Creep Tapes Season 1; he leaned over to Brice and said, “You are so fucking weird, dude. I love you guys.” That moment apparently helped seed the idea for his later role.
  • He is the first character in the franchise to commit suicide.
