~ The Core revealing itself to have Aldrich's psyche.
“
FOOLS! You cannot stop… a GOD!
„
~ The Core taunting the Calamity Trio during their final battle, - also its most famous quote.
The Core, also known as Darcy when possessing Marcy Wu, is the overarching antagonist of the Disney Channel animated series Amphibia. It is the digital amalgamation of Amphibia's greatest minds and past rulers, including King Aldrich, as well as the hidden true ruler of Amphibia, that seeks to dismantle the prophecy that brought the girls to Amphibia and conquer the multiverse using the Calamity Box. It is also the former master of King Andrias and the arch-nemesis of Calamity Trio.
The Core originally appeared as a mechanical cephalopod-like creature with nine orange eyes and tentacles on the side of its spherical body. It is of massive size, towering over Andrias, who himself is much larger than humans.
Upon possessing Marcy, the Core (then known as "Darcy") now has her body in dark armor with a long black and red cape attached to her back, while also controlling her via an axolotl-shaped helmet with ten orange eyes, to which was also attached a cable. After being defeated by Sasha, the Core was then reduced to just the helmet, which produced spider-like legs.
The helmet then propelled itself to the moon, which it modified long ago as a super-weapon. Upon attaching itself to it, the moon revealed several eyes resembling its own.
Personality[]
“
Fear. I've been in that thing's head. I know that more than anything. It's afraid of being destroyed. Of being irrelevant. It will do whatever it takes to defeat us and claim the stones as its own. If that means destroying an entire civilization, then so be it.
„
~ Marcy Wu describing the Core's mind.
Early on, it had no clear personality besides being a manipulative whisperer, pulling the strings behind Andrias. Once it takes control of Marcy, however, the Core is established to be sadistic, as shown when it mocks Andrias' failed attempt in killing Anne with the Santa Claus robot, saying that he's not as much of a king as he thought he was. Later on, the Core inherits some of her quirks and mannerisms, becoming a bit more laid back and goofy, but it is still established to be a destructive and malevolent being who is out to conquer the multiverse by any means necessary and not to be taken lightly.
Much like Aldrich and the past kings before him, the Core has gotten too used to the idea of being an invincible conqueror due to the long history of multi-dimensional conquest of Amphibia to take into consideration scouting the Earth properly before initiating the invasion, leading to it thinking humans are weak species. Furthermore, despite getting a glimpse into Earth's technology in the form of Marcy's smartphone, the Core arrogantly states that Earth technology is pathetic while ignorantly never realizing that the smartphone is not military technology as well as the fact that how much humans have advanced in the past 1,000 years. While its army's technology is actually good enough to indeed defeat humanity's efforts, it underestimates Anne, Sasha, and their determination with the Core ending up losing its control over Marcy's body.
After its invasion of Earth was thwarted, the Core became enraged and attempts to crash its artificial moon into Amphibia to kill everyone out of spite for being defeated. When Anne questioned why it would do such a thing, Marcy, due to her experience with the Core and her personal feelings, explained that all of its actions were driven by one thing: Fear. All of the minds inside were deeply afraid of not only death, but also not being in control, and since it could no longer control Amphibia, it decided to destroy it as a means of not letting its inhabitants have it either. The Core even proclaimed itself to be a god as the Calamity Trio attempted to stop it. In the end, the Core feared death as it was horrified when Anne used the combined power of the three Calamity Gems to destroy it once and for all.
Powers and Abilities[]
As a device meant to carry the minds of many for eternity, the Core's initial frame was possibly built to have incredible feats of endurance. And by possessing so many minds, of which were the greatest in Amphibia, it also had phenomenal intelligence, though it was impaired by its own arrogance. It was also large in size, allowing it to easily overpower smaller individuals.
After possessing Marcy Wu, the Core, then known as "Darcy" was able to read all her memories and gain insight on them. With her knowledge, it was able to predict the strategy that the heroes made to defeat it and obtain the box, allowing it to easily thwart them. Darcy also had great combat prowess and skill using a scythe, being able to fight off both Sasha and Grime at the same time, and was also able to manipulate mechanical tentacles and cast illusions. However, as Anne pointed out, it only knew what she and Sasha were capable of before it uploaded itself to Marcy. In addition, Darcy's helmet was dependent on an extension cord linking it to the castle, and once it was severed, she was expelled from Marcy's body.
Once the Core connected itself with Amphibia's moon, which was converted into a super-weapon, it gained complete control over it, capable of sending it hurdling into the planet below to wipe out all life. It was also able to unleash several bio-mechanical monstrosities within to act as its guards. Due to its incredible mass, the Calamity Trio, even after gaining super-powers and with the help of several robots, were not able to stop it, thus forcing Anne to use the full power of the gems herself to destroy the moon and the Core with it at the cost of her own life, though she was later resurrected by the Guardian of the Calamity Gems.
~ Darcy mocks Andrias' failed attempt to kill Anne.
“
As we thought, this technology is pathetic!
„
~ Darcy inspects Marcy's phone.
“
Darcy: Hmm, good question, big guy. Why don't you call us… Darcy! Andrias: Darcy? Darcy: Yeah, you know, like, "Dark Marcy". It's a reference to one of Marcy's favorite video games. We searched her memories and the name appeals to us.
„
~ Darcy tells Andrias how to call them while in Marcy's body.
“
No, no, no. This is her body, but we got her locked in a little room up here. We're the ones in control. Although we've inherited some of her… quirks.
„
~ The Core explaining Marcy's current status.
“
So, we need to purge our system of some excess data, redundant memories, that sort of thing. This requires a full system reboot, and you're the only one we trust to… Andrias?
„
~ Darcy instructs Andrias.
“
Alright! You did it! Gold star for you, bud. But now that that's taken care of, who's ready to finally… start… invading… Earth?
„
~ Darcy after reboot.
“
Hello, girls. Nice of you to fall for our trap.
„
~ Darcy meets captured Anne and Sasha.
“
We're not Marcy, not anymore. We are a collection of Amphibia's greatest minds, uploaded into a unified consciousness.
„
~ The Core/Darcy explaining what it is to Anne and Sasha.
“
Your friend? Don't be silly. You're not friends. Not anymore. And examining Marcy's memories, it's doubtful you ever were.
„
~ Darcy mocks Sasha about her friendship with Marcy.
“
Ah, the famous Anne: dumber than a bag of rocks. And yet, somehow, this rebellion's last hope. Oh! Which reminds me...
„
~ Darcy taunts Anne for her failed plan.
“
Frogs, toads, and newts of the Resistance, your leaders have been captured! Your rebellion is over!
„
~ Darcy forces the Resistance to retreat.
“
Darcy: Then all that's left is for us to do what you could not: kill Anne [Everyone gasps.] Darcy: It's been risky enough using the box up until now: we don't what will happen as long as she holds a piece of its power.
„
~ Darcy plans to kill Anne.
“
Amusing! You wish to beg?
„
~ Darcy sadistically speaks to Anne, before attempting to kill her.
“
Darcy: Unprecedented. We cannot reach a consensus. Therefore, we must confirm the energy can be safely extracted before killing her. Anne: Wait, did I seriously outsmart you? Darcy: You only bought enough time to watch your planet fall. We look forward to dissecting you… alive! Guards, have the rest of them fitted for collars immediately. Andrias, portal, now. It's time.
„
~ Darcy decides to deal with Anne and her friends later, before beginning their invasion.
“
Speaking of eggs, how about a show of force!
„
~ Darcy releases the Giant Herons on the city.
“
Congratulations, big guy! After a thousand years, you finally made amends. Ah, and isn't it grand? Who needs friends when they have everlasting power?
„
~ Darcy to Andrias during their invasion.
“
You're kidding us! They escaped?!
„
~ Darcy seeing Anne and her friends have escaped and are fighting the Frobot army.
“
This has gone on long enough! Get out there and me bring me that Boonchuy girl! BREAK HER LEGS IF YOU HAVE TO!
„
~ Darcy ordering Andrias to capture Anne during the battle.
“
Dropping by without calling? How rude. Then again, we're not surprised. Marcy always said you were kind of a brute.
„
~ Darcy to Sasha after she reentered the castle.
“
Well, then… let's rumble, girl-friend.
„
~ Darcy prepares to fight Sasha and Grime.
“
Oops! Looks like he's disarmed. Get it: DIS-ARMED!?
„
~ Darcy sadistically jokes about slicing off Grime's left arm; their most infamous line.
“
It can't be… Aldrich, your son is losing the will to fight! That weakling! Hey, Sasha, as a fellow control freak, you'll probably really appreciate this!
„
~ Darcy realizes that Andrias lost will to fight, before trying to mind-control him.
“
Andrias, stand up and fight, YOU PATHETIC EXCUSE FOR A KING! We are all you need! We are all you will ever HAVE!
„
~ Darcy tries to control Andrias.

„
~ The Core's last words before Anne destroys it.
Trivia[]
The Core is alluded to in the intro sequence, which depicts figures resembling Anne, Marcy, and Sasha battling against a large toad-like creature with gems for eyes and fire in its hands, although this differs from its true design. According to Amphibia's creator, Matt Braly, this "monster" on the mural represents the combination of evil and greed on Amphibia, something that has to do with the existence of the Core in the first place, as the amphibians in the past were all arrogant and greedy conquerors according to Mother Olm.
If one would assume the Core's eyes represented its contained minds, then the number of people uploaded into the Core is 35 or higher, based on its moon form. While it is true some forms have more eyes than others, it's most likely for simplicity's sake so the entire body won't be filled with eyes or to not overwhelm the design artists with far too many eyes.
Interestingly, when it debuted, the Core's machine form had 13 eyes, but upon its return in "Olivia & Yunan", it has only 9 eyes. This is most likely just a blooper.
The Core serves as an evil counterpart to all three of the Calamity Trio:
The Core and Sasha are both manipulative control freaks who wanted to rule over Amphibia, and it's shown that the former is aware of their similarities by calling Sasha a "fellow control freak". Interestingly, when Andrias and Anne rebel against the Core and Sasha respectively, the utter the same words: "Something I should've done a long time ago: standing up to YOU!". The only difference is Sasha was able to see how her desires for control, manipulations, and bullying affected the people she cared about, thanks to which she was able to shed her negative traits and become a better person, while the Core simply ignored the effects its desires had on others and continued to belittle those beneath it. By all means, the Core could be considered as a dark example of who Sasha could've become had she never given up her villainous tendencies.
Both Marcy and the Core were intelligent and feared change. However, while Marcy was able to accept and come to terms with being separated from her friends, the Core refused to accept defeat and allow Amphibia to move past it, to the point of trying to destroy it all when it's defeated. Fittingly enough, Marcy spend a good chunk of Season 3 possessed by the Core. However, if Marcy would let her fear of change consumed her, then she would be ended up like it.
The Core is a heartless, sadistic robot who only desired power, did not understand feelings of love, and proclaimed itself to be a god. Meanwhile, Anne is a compassionate, selfless human girl who valued family and friendships and embodied the Calamity Box's blue gem of Heart. Even when she was offered by the Guardian a chance to replace its position as a multiversal god, Anne politely and temporarily turned it down in favor of being a perfectly average human being, and while she's willing to accept said offer after she's lived a full life on Earth having learned her lifelong lessons, the Core has learned nothing of its past experiences and actively refuses to change, compared to Anne's character development. It also represents what Anne would've become if she hasn't learned anything from her past experience if it wasn't for the Plantars.
The Core is ranked ninth in the Top 10 Most Powerful Cartoon Villains Ever by WatchMojo.
It’s unknown whether or not the Core contains the souls of any spouses of the Leviathan family or even if said relatives knew of the invasions ordered by their spouses but any information on them has never been confirmed by Matt Braly, the creator of the series and so it remains unknown.
The Core makes a cameo in The Book of Bill, being one of the souls sent to the Theraprism for rehabilitation in order to reincarnate.
