~ The Crescent King announcing his presence in-universe, as well as his recanonization to the audience in The Head of the House. As well as his most famous quote. |
The Crescent King is the main antagonist of THE HOUSE IN THE OCEAN series and the secondary antagonist of the analog superhorror series, THE NIXONVERSE: A MONUMENT MYTHOS STORY, the second installment in THE MONUMENT MYTHOS franchise and its expansion, THE ABSOLUTE NIXONVERSE.
Coming from the stars above, the Crescent King's arrival would be announced to local astronomer Eli Tillon and presumably many before him by extraterrestrial energy beings resembling starfishes, who would also tell Tillon that he was fated to become a container for the King. After a failed attempt to spoil his own body for three "cycles" to render his body unfit for possession, Tillon's neural networks would be hijacked by the King and he would effectively become a vessel for him.
The King would then go on to make the world aware of it's presence in an attempt to take over their neural networks through urban legends and most notably the Houses in the Ocean phenomena ocurring throughout oceans all over the globe. The King would manipulate C/H/A/S/E The Wandering Robot into "voiding" (destroying) his universe's planet Earth.
In the Nixonverse, a universe created from Richard Nixon's interference with a parallel universe, a cover story issued by the US government involving the King and his Houses was created in order to cover the appearance of another enigmatic "House" in the ocean.
Personality[]
The Crescent King is a completely malevolent being, devoid of any redeeming quality. The King enjoys toying with the mind of his victims, mainly by compelling people to attack and shoot the Houses in the ocean, which will result in said people's disfigurement or even death, since the Houses are merely a reflection of one's mind.
The King's misanthropy goes as far as to manipulate C/H/A/S/E the wandering robot so that it would give Lunarians the signal to fire a planet-destroying missile at Earth. And since the King's endgame was always to destroy Earth, it can be deduced that the Houses were merely a way for the King to have fun at the expense of humanity, although the King may have had a bigger or more complex agenda in mind. Regardless, the King seems to enjoy what he does, as evidenced by his crude and immature sense of humor, such as when he claims that Bushe's pronunciation of "ship" sounds much like "sh#t".
Biography[]
The origins of the Crescent King are completely unknown. It is presumed that the Crescent King is the King of the Lunarians, due to his association with the moon, though this wasn't confirmed. At some point, the Crescent King became interested in Earth and began to summon the titular houses accross Earth's oceans. According to one footage, the Crescent King would dwell in such Houses, observing people coming to the houses and likely compelling them to do so.
The Crescent King parable[]
An interviewer and a man named Eli recount an incident that has been spreading across the east coast, likely the east coast of the US. Eli recalls fishing with a friend when she noticed a weird set of stars moving in an unnatural way in the sky. When the friend notifies Eli, he immediately went to see the event, being known as the local astronomer. When he arrived, he could not find the friends' boat, and set his telescope up to view the stars. He had noticed the stars were approaching the ground and not literally growing. Eli watched the "stars" for several hours until they began hurling at the ground at a much faster speed. The interviewer asks how fast they were going, and Eli notes they traveled from the clouds to the surface in a blink of an eye.
When the stars reach the surface, they approach Eli, and reveal themselves to have organic tendrils protruding from them. The largest of them speaks to Eli about The Crescent King's arrival in three cycles, these cycles being days. The "stars" then propel into the sky, causing Eli and his boat to sink as Eli is pulled into the ocean by his telescope. He sees the remnants of many boats and corpses in the water, including his friend, and swims to the shore. The interviewer asks if he knows of William Rice or Bert Essex, two men who also went missing in the area. Eli says he does not. Eli then explains the feeling of utter helplessness at the sheer power of the being coming before him, before his soul was thrown out of his body by a projection of The Crescent King. The King then probed his mind and body to see if he was a suitable container for himself, and when he finished, Eli's soul was sent back into his body, knocking him unconscious. The interviewer asked if he had any messages in his dreams, and Eli said he didn't remember. Eli slept for one whole day after the event, and awoke on the beach. Eli would then claw at his skin and drink salt water in an attempt to soil his body. That would not work, as he passes out from exhaustion and watches as The Crescent King metaphorically enters his mind, falling into the ocean. The interviewer then tells Eli that several people have had a similar experience, and many come out catatonic; when the stories got out, they sent the east coast into a panic. Eli surprisingly and coldly remarks that this is good. The interviewer, now confused, watch in horror as Eli's head contorts and reveals a crescent shaped head with a tendril coming out of it, assumedly killing the interviewer. After this, Eli and the King end up having to share his body and take turns, one going unconscious when the other takes over.
The Crescent Beasts[]
Eli Tillon, the man who was in the interview about The Crescent King, also speaks of several crescent beasts that have shown up around the southeast. Their breathing pervades throughout Eli's neighborhood, causing panic. A university near one of the beasts does x-ray filming of the beast to reveal the inside of the beasts are that of an unstable nuclear reaction. The neighborhood near Eli was evacuated, but Eli stayed because he knew the beasts would release large amounts of heat if their heads lined up with the Moon. It is implied Eli had sat through the explosion.
"Freeing" C/H/A/S/E[]
After the explosion of the Crescent Creatures, an unknown individual, all but confirmed to be the Crescent King, would use their subliminal and non-corporeal nature to contact and manipulate C/H/A/S/E The Wandering Robot into rebelling against her co-workers, or as they referred to, her "captors". Militaries from accross the globe attempted to stop the robot; however, she would always fall back to the individual's mind control. Eventually, Chase would reach her destination, Antarctica, where she would start "adding stars to her sky" and signal outer forces, presumably related to the Nixonverse's Lunarians, to "void" the planet, resulting in the ship firing a missile at Earth, subsequently destroying our planet. It can be assumed that the Crescent King's vessel, Eli Tillon, was killed in the cataclysmic event.
Legacy[]
Somehow, the House in the Ocean series remained documented alongside the "Restored" videos created by the Crescent King and ended up in the Nixonverse alongside the Monument Mythos series. For a long time, both series would be considered fiction by the inhabitants of the Nixonverse, until rumors of the Last Son of Alcatraz's transformation into his childhood house and eventually the King of the Lunarians were being spread. The House in the Ocean series was considered by Molly Avenue and presumably many others as a cover-up story for the events in the Nixonverse.
The Last Son took the form of the Crescent King after being brainwashed by the Lunarians, presumably allowing the Crescent King to partially live again through his transformation. The Last Son would eventually shapeshift out of this form after being freed of Lunarian control after the ALCATRAZ CHECKMATE and in turn transform himself into a version of The Horned Serpent.
It's unknown what the King's status is after the fictionalization of the Nixonverse, although it's likely that he remains alive through his nature as a non-corporeal memetic being.
Trivia[]
- Although stated to be a cover-up story in the Nixonverse, Mister Manticore considers that the events of the House in the Ocean series occurred in what was dubbed by the fans as the "Houseverse."
- It's unknown what the status of this statement is after the premiere of THE ABSOLUTE NIXONVERSE, the canonical expansion of the original Nixonverse series which removes most references to HOUSE IN THE OCEAN and the films retconned to be part of it. Notably, the CRESCENT KING short appears as a post-credits scene, possibly hinting that the King now lives in the universe created after Nixon's fictionalization.
- The Crescent King has one of the highest bodycount of the franchise, similar to the Horned Serpent.
