“ | The Crossed are people who - through infection - have given in to the absolute worst instincts that human beings can: murder, rape, torture, cannibalism, all of the most cruel and inventive kind imaginable. They are out of control, really. Their number one urge is to get their hands into normal people and commit every ghastly act they can think of - they can't fight it, and they don't want to. | „ |
~ Garth Ennis' official description of The Crossed. |
The Crossed are the titular main antagonists of the Crossed comic book series. They get their namesake from the cross-shaped rash on their faces.
They were once humans, but were infected by the mysterious C-Virus, which stripped them of all impulse restraint and compelled them to act upon whatever violent or sexual intrusive thoughts that passed in their minds.
Personality/Behavior[]
The Crossed are a group of people who have been infected by a mysterious virus that can turn anyone at all into the worst possible versions of themselves. All of those infected turn into psychotic/psychopathic, extreme sadomasochistic murderers, and rapists who only live to spread as much chaos and misery as possible for no reason at all other their own amusement.
Whenever The Crossed become hungry, they all seem to resort to cannibalism as they're never seen eating anything else, unless it's something painful such as broken glass to get some laughter out of their own pain. In order to further damage their own health, The Crossed also take any and all drugs they come across, also denying any uninfected access to it.
According to characters such as Thomas (Volume One) and Joyce Pratt (Family Values), the actual process of being infected with the C-Virus in incredibly painful, describing it as a venom that causes a severe burning feeling. The rash caused by the infection also does not stop at the skin, as it has also been shown on the skulls of those infected.
Whenever there are no uninfected humans around to kill, rape, or torture, The Crossed will quickly turn on each other and usually pick one out of their group to focus their violent tendencies on, though they usually get bored of this rather quickly since the Crossed that's being mutilated genuinely enjoys it and doesn't give them the begging and pain filled cries they crave. The Crossed have also been known to go into a bored catatonic state, but quickly snap out of it once they find another human.
In rare instances, some infected by The Crossed retain their intelligence and are able to plan ahead instead of simply acting in the moment, so that they can inflict more pain in the future as well as setting up traps and possibly even setting up societies in order to cause more widespread destruction by sharing their hateful ideas.
For the most part, it seems like The Crossed are unable to learn new things they did not already know how to do before being infected, such as using firearms and flying planes. Other than the occasional intelligent Crossed such as Smokey, most are quite slow with some even being entirely unable to speak coherent sentences, either communicating to other Crossed by only spouting swears and slurs or just screaming to get attention.
The amount of time it takes for a person to "cross" with the C-Virus seems to vary drastically with every person, with some taking almost an entire day to turn, and others turning almost immediately after being infected.
First shown in volume three "Psychopath" with the 'Skinfaces' and the 'Bloodskins', some groups of The Crossed will create their own gangs. Why the Crossed do this could be because of disagreements on how they should kill the uninfected or they just simply find the idea of gang violence entertaining even when it's against each other.
In the fourth issue of "The Golden Road", it's revealed through a conversation between an infected Nathan and Gideon Welles that the red text associated with The Crossed when they speak is meant to be their voices changing entirely and some parts of their brain are shut off entirely and damaging those parts do nothing to slow them down and The Crossed are entirely aware of this.
Some of The Crossed enjoy making games out of killing their victims. Shown on one of the issue's cover-art are several Crossed men who have tied a woman to the end of a race track and add the challenge of cutting off their own legs so they have to crawl to her in order to have their ways with her, even though they'll most likely bleed out afterwards, while other Crossed in makeshift stands cheer them on.
Revealed in the Badlands story "Of The World in it's Becoming" and a few issue covers, not even babies are immune to the virus. It's unknown if they have the same violent urges as grown Crossed men and women, though they have been shown laughing whenever they're in danger or in extreme pain, showing they still have the extreme masochism all other Crossed possess.
Symptoms[]
- A red rash with pus-filled boils in the shape of a cross-like pattern appearing on an infected individual's face, usually develops within seconds after infection, burning itself all the way down to the skull.
- Intense internal burning feeling, possibly a fever.
- Complete loss of empathy and morality, potential loss of overall sanity.
- Extreme levels of sadomasochism.
- Intense desire to harm others physically, sexually, psychologically, and emotionally.
- Self-harm and suicidal thoughts.
- Change in speech patterns, normally degenerating to simple, disorganized use of words and jargon.
- Complete loss of fear and self-preservation.
- Unrelenting persistence to achieving goals in harming others.
- Heightened abilities to track down the uninfected.
- Rarely, an infected individual will retain their intelligence and be able to both plan ahead and control their urges, instead of merely acting in the moment.
- Extreme varying amounts of time to turn into one of The Crossed. Some take mere seconds while others take an entire day or longer.
