The Deadly Alliance are some of the main antagonists of the Mortal Kombat franchise, referring to the partnership between the evil sorcerers Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. They serve as the titular main antagonists of Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, and the main antagonists of Mortal Kombat 1.
History[]
First Timeline[]
The Deadly Alliance was originally formed when Quan Chi managed to escape his former slave Scorpion, who was attempting to avenge the deaths of his family and the Shirai Ryu clan. After allying with the Oni Moloch and Drahmin and opening a portal, Quan Chi found himself within the tomb of Onaga the Dragon King, and discovered his Army. Quan Chi realized that he needed someone with power over souls to reanimate it, and sought out Shang Tsung. Together, they agreed to revive the Army, making it loyal to them, and conquer the Realms. They first elected to get rid of both Shao Kahn and Liu Kang, who the considered their greatest obstacles. Shang Tsung presented Quan Chi to Kahn, and seemingly killed him in a sneak attack. Kano would offer his services to them in response. Afterwards, they headed to the Wu Shi Academy, where they confronted Liu Kang, and together, they managed to kill him.
They would take over the village of Sun Do to construct a palace, and Quan Chi opened a Soulnado, which Shang Tsung would use to transplant souls into the undead army. Aside from recruiting Kano, they would also recruit his opposite number Mavado to kill the Earthrealm warrior Kenshi, and Tanya would become their self described "ambassador." When the villager Li Mei stood up to Kano, she was given a chance to free her people by competing in a kombat tournament. As well as this, they faced their old enemies led by Raiden, who came to Outworld to stop them before they could conquer the Realms. When Li Mei won the tournament, the Deadly Alliance betrayed her by having her soul be infused into one of the undead soldiers.
In the various character endings, the Deadly Alliance met any number of fates, such as being defeated by the heroes, or one member of the Deadly Alliance backstabbing the other, or being betrayed by Kano. In the canon version of events, many of their enemies were killed or AWOL, and Kung Lao and Kitana took on Shang Tsung and Quan Chi respectively, but both were killed, leaving Raiden as their last opponent, as revealed by Deception. Raiden was a worthy match against the sorcerers, but in the end, the two of them were able to defeat the Thunder God. With their path to power seemingly guaranteed, Shang Tsung made a grasp for power, but was defeated by Quan Chi. However, something that neither expected occurred when a resurrected version of Onaga stormed into the Palace to reclaim his army and retrieve Shinnok's Amulet. The Deadly Alliance and Raiden were forced to combat this greater threat, with them holding him back with magical blasts. Knowing that they could not defeat the Dragon King on their own, Raiden sacrificed himself in a blast that killed the Deadly Alliance, the Army and levelled the Palace.
New Era[]
While in Fire God Liu Kang's New Era, neither Shang Tsung or Quan Chi were supposed to become sorcerers, let alone form a partnership, thanks to the manipulations of "Damashi", they would become the villains they were in previous timelines, and join an alliance to take over the Realms, basing themselves in the abandoned Ying Fortress. They both infiltrated the Royal court, with Quan Chi sowing doubt about Liu Kang's intentions with a bogus prophecy, and Shang Tsung aiding Princess Mileena with her Tarkat infection. They were able to sway several others in the plot, including General Shao and Rain, the Seidan rebels Havik and Darrius, and the Vaternian Nitara. The sorcerers planned to construct soul stealers to infuse the ancient Dragon Army with souls to conquer the Realms, but came under attack by Liu Kang's allies. When the Lin Kuei invaded Ying Fortress, however, Shang Tsung was able to sway their Grandmaster Sub-Zero to their side. However, Scorpion escaped despite their efforts, but they were able to activate the Soul Stealers, giving the Dragon Army.
Ying Fortress would be invaded by the combined forces of Earthrealm and Outworld, and Mileena approached the sorcerers, claiming to have sided with them as a ruse, and the sorcerers were defeated in the battle with Liu Kang's allies. In the subsequent confrontation, Liu Kang demanded that they reveal their benefactor, to which Shang Tsung introduced Damashi. However, this was the moment "Damashi" revealed the ruse, revealing "herself" to be Titan Shang Tsung. This alternative version of the sorcerer revealed that he was using the Deadly Alliance so he can take over their timeline and wipe out all life, treating them as "pawns, not partners". The Deadly Alliance then form an uneasy alliance with Liu Kang to stop Titan Shang Tsung.
To prevent the Dragon Army's invasion, the Deadly Alliance were paired with Raiden to destroy the portals in the Gateway, with them sharing an antagonistic relationship with Earthrealm's champion, considering him "insufferable". They were interrupted by Titan Shang Tsung's Dark minions, including versions of Kenshi, Ermac, Rain, and Smoke, during which the sorcerer's channelled their anger at betrayal in killing their former benefactor's servants. Eventually, Shang Tsung realized that their version of Shao was linked to the portals, meaning that by killing him they could save time destroying every portal. They were interrupted by Sub-Zero and Scorpion, but after defeating them, as well as Shao and Reiko, Shang Tsung and Quan Chi stole Shao's soul, sealing the portals, then joined the Battle of Armageddon.
During the Battle, which had been inspired by Titan Shang Tsung's widened ambition to conquer every timeline in existence, an alternate version of the Deadly Alliance was seen between Titan Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, who acted as the leaders of the Order of Darkness atop the Pyramid. They noticed one of Liu Kang's allies making their way up the Pyramid, blasting them away, and were attacked by heroic versions of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, but the Titans proceeded to tear the Light Alliance apart. Eventually, Liu Kang and his Final Warrior confronted the Titan Alliance, who refused to surrender. The Alliance actually managed to restrain Liu Kang, and taunted the Final Warrior, confident of their victory. Much to their surprise, the Final Warrior managed to best them, and Liu Kang proceeded to wipe them from existence, hoping to never see them again. The New Era's incarnation of the Alliance would be held in Li Chen prison, but they managed to be broken out, living on to fight another day.
