The Deer is the main antagonist of the 2025 Roblox survival and resource-management game 99 Nights in the Forest, developed by Grandma's Favorite Games.
It is a giant deer monster worshipped by a bizarre cult found deep within the woods, terrorizing anyone who steps into its territory. After a plane crashes into its home, the Deer and its followers kidnapped the four kids who survived, and it's now out to get whoever decides to step in and save them.
Appearance[]
The Deer is a giant anthropomorphic deer with brown fur, a beige muzzle, black antlers, black claws, and black hooves. A mysterious black material seems to seep from its hands to its forearms. The Deer has large, bulging eyes, and an outstretched jaw. On rare occasions, the Deer's eyes will glow red, indicating that it is hungry.
Personality[]
From what is seen of the Deer, it appears to be highly aggressive and feral being, doing whatever it can to keep itself from starving. The Deer is remarkably territorial, hunting down anything in the woods that it roams in. The Deer seems to prefer stalking its victims before attacking. The Deer also has a fierce distaste for light, blocking its eyes when a flashlight is used on it and prancing back into the woods on all fours once the sun comes up.
Despite its nature, it and its followers have not killed the four missing children, instead keeping them locked inside rooms deep in the forest. While the purpose of this is unclear, it does seem to indicate that the Deer is capable of higher thought. It also seems to place a fair bit of faith in its cult, being non-hostile to its followers and silently watching them during raids, only fleeing once all of the attacking cultists have been killed.
The Deer isn't incapable of reason, and it is willing to repay those who treat it with kindness, even going so far as turning against its own followers in order to support its newfound ally. It also knows when it's too weak to fight, and doesn't try attacking while being healed. Unfortunately, this alliance is temporary, as the Deer immediately reverts back to its hostile behavior after a few nights have passed.
Biography[]
The origins of the Deer are a mystery. It's unclear if it is supernatural or scientific in nature, but the presence of a laboratory seems to indicate the latter. At an unknown point, people in the surrounding area started worshipping the Deer, wearing masks in its likeness, in turn causing the Deer to ally itself with its newfound followers. The Deer would go on to terrorize any outsiders, seemingly even killing a few, and had become such a notorious myth that hunting in the forest is heavily frowned upon.
On one fateful day, four kids would get lost in the Deer's home, seemingly as a result of a plane crash. Instead of immediately killing them, oddly enough, the Deer and its followers decided to lock the four kids away in special bedrooms, and in the present day, a search party was sent out to find the four missing children.
In the game proper, the Deer only comes out at night, attacking any players it sees. After the first night, where it silently stalks the campfire from a distance, the Deer will roam around once the sun sets, with players urged to get to the safety of the campfire. It can be stalled for a period of time if the flashlight is shone on it, and will retreat if it gets too close to the campfire if it's still active. On rare occasions, the Deer will "get hungry", causing its eyes to glow red and for its speed and attack power to increase. The Deer will also increase in speed if the players let the campfire go out. Its behavior gets more aggressive as the game goes on, with it getting hungry more frequently.
Upon surviving ninety-nine days, a cutscene plays displaying the Deer watching the player's campsite from afar, struggling to reach its hand out before giving up, retreating into the bushes nearby to avoid the light. The Deer finds its way into a cave, breaking open a grate leading to a sewer system, and looks back to face the camera (and presumably the exit of the cave) one final time before seemingly entering the sewers. As there are plans for the game to have a longer story, the exact meaning of the ending, as well as what happens to the Deer afterwards, is unknown.
Trivia[]
- The Deer is completely docile on the first night of the game, not attacking players even if they're out of the campsite. Its also far less aggressive during a raid, only attacking if a player strays too far away from the campsite.
- Despite going into the sewers after the ninety-ninth day, the Deer will still be an active threat for the remainder of the server's playtime, as the game is functionally endless.
- While the Deer is solely referred to with the genderless "it/its" pronouns, it can be presumed to be male due to it having antlers (a trait only male deer possess), assuming that its biology follows similar laws to that of regular deer.
- The Deer cannot be active on the same night as either The Owl or The Ram, both of which are entities added after the game was initially launched.
